Some don’t understand that parts of this film are SUPPOSED TO BE uncomfortable and awkward to watch. It’s not only giving you insight on the beauty that Van Gogh desperately wanted to show the world but also the torment and confusion that he experienced. The cinematography of this film was risky, vibrant and at times over ambitious but man, this film is one big, beautiful frustration in the best way possible. RIP Vincènt Van Gogh

The wobbly camera was a problem for me too at the start, but then I realized that it got worse as his madness did! As a matter of fact, it s at its worst in the beginning of the film and in fact it really makes you dive in Gogh's psychology and his perception of the world. In the end I really appreciated At Eternity's Gate and DaFoe's performance was excellent. He's such a unique and special actor.

Was it? In the movie van gogh didn't confirm how he was shot. When they asked him what happened he said he didn't know. I think this was an artistic decision as you saw the alternative theory but van gogh concludes the event with uncertainty; the motif of his whole life.

The wobbly camera work was the worst part of this otherwise great film and allot of times downright distracting.
@robertpayne4435

Not distracting for me...for me it gives what you see a sense of how such strong desire and emotion can make life not neat and clean. Like the live impact from an emotional event It's not neat.

I completely agree. it just made me super aware that there was a cameraman in their face. for me it didn’t work as a metaphor for what’s going on in Vincents head. that would be a POV shot. This is from a third person watching. it just looked like a teenager videotaping and it took me out of the action.

I didn't feel like that. He loves so much what he has shot that when he talks about it, it seems to be praising himself; that's the attitude of a passionate guy not an arrogant one

It's a confidence, when you make a film, especially with stars like these you need confidence to do the job behind the camera as best you can to a time limit and he has that, as will the director and everyone else behind camera. They would have to, even if the results aren't perfect, they'll need to handle the feedback on their work too.
