Dirtiest Job On The Farm

Farm With Me

Жыл бұрын

Dagging is one of my least favorite jobs on the farm, but it's completely necessary! One of the consequences of 100's of years of breeding sheep for high wool production is that they grow lots of wool on their butts. And, as I'm sure you can imagine, that doesn't make good hygiene easy for sheep! Dagging takes place as needed and is also a preventative for flystrike.
We make great use of our Handypiece portable shearing handpiece in this video. We have used their product on the farm for years and recommend it highly. Be sure to visit their website (link below) if you have sheep or are thinking about getting into shearing.
This video was made possible by our channel sponsor, Handypiece LTD.

This gives more better ideas of how Sheep farming is handled. I am use to cow farms but never had the experience with Sheep farms, and now I get the idea and how hard it looks to get the job done

I was expecting a big supply of maggots when I seen that bad one. And it feels sooo much better to the sheep when the fur and maggots are gone.

Before even clicking the video, my brain said, "Cleaning up a dried up 💩 butt." I grew up on a farm. Folk think the mud you're walking in is dirt. It ain't dirt, that's 💩 mud. This is why I grew up having different shoes for different things. I'm not gonna clean off the "mud" from my boots and go to church. Nope. Because it's 💩. That gets hosed off then left in the laundry room

Chopping up them maggos...how do they create that damp environment? We have a massive mob of 4... One struck 2 times. Been dry but wool rotten damp.
@FarmWithMeNZ
@FarmWithMeNZ Жыл бұрын
The maggots themselves often create the gross environment for themselves. They start to bite, causing a wound that weaps and becomes damp from the wound opening up.

I don't speak German, but I'll answer anyway. I think that most farmers who breed sheep tie off the tail with a rubber band. This stops the blood flow, and the tail comes off. It's called docking. This is important because the tail, if not docked, can get full of poop & muck and cause infection.

These particular sheep have been shorn and the wool has been sold. Unfortunately the wool we sell is not valuable at the moment so we are actually make a loss on it. The primary income is from selling sheep around 6-10 months old for meat.

There's some money to be made if a farmer can connect with spinners/crafts people. But a lot of the farmers have large flocks and don't have the time. Also connecting the farms to fiber people can be hard. Usually they sell in a wool pool and make basically nothing, which really stinks
