Join us as we address a common challenge on the farm: flystrike. Watch as we encounter the unfortunate situation of our prized breeding ram falling victim to this pesky problem.
We'll take you along as we locate our ram, assess the situation, and administer the necessary treatment.
While the situation may not be ideal, we approach it with a calm and proactive mindset, focusing on the steps needed to address the issue and restore our ram's health.

Early spring have the sheep crutched in a shearing shed. "Crutch" means shearing the rear end of the sheep in early spring. Then, inspect sheep in the yards every three weeks in the field, until the sheep are fully shorn the end of the first month of summer.

I have a couple questions. First of all I know the hard work you guys put in in a days work. There's no 9 to 5 for you all... Why does a sheep when infected with fly strike wander off by themselves and why does the skin get so dark around the infected area I noticed when they are sheered? Can it go to another sheep that the infected sheep is just standing by, do they get it too? Are sheep the only one's that get this? Them drones are amazing when it comes to stuff like checking on your flock. Your so gentle when sheering them compared to what I've seen and I'm a huge animal lover so thank you. Amazing dogs and I loved the hand held out front while approaching the Ram to say stop... Don't even try it lol.... Thank you.

Maybe it's like us, sometimes when we feel ill we just want to go lay down and not be bothered. The dark patch is necrotic skin, blood and sometime dirt. No the maggots don't move from the one sheep to another like that. Thanks for your comment!

I'm a wee hobby farmer in the United States. This is the end of my third full year having sheep. I've gotten the shearers in for my (less than 10) sheep the last two years. But this year the girls are all losing their wool in chunks. Well, five out of seven ewes are losing the wool to a greater or lesser degree. One girl lost her wool last year too, and this year, I saw that grimy fly-strike coloration that seems a sign on one of the girls. I don't (or didn't) have shears but I crowded her in a corner and, like the others, she's losing her wool, so I pulled what I could away from the area until it was fully exposed. (about 3 or 4 cm in diameter). I've bought shears since I don't really want to pay three hundred dollars for the shearers to come out and shear 2 whole sheep and five half-naked sheep. I plan to halter tie each ewe and practice first on the one girl who had signs of fly strike. I put some permethrin (spelling, not sure if that's the exact name) on her, but not sure if she's fully over it. I'll be spending Mother's day learning how to do a (likely very bad job of) shearing. Thank you for sharing. Poor boy. Glad you spotted his need.

I'm assuming if left untreated the maggots grow in numbers and they chew and draw blood, plus infection, and things go deteriorate from there? Seems like it really happens fast. Wishing for a speedy recovery !

@marks3742 I guess like mango worms they start feeding off any flesh they’ve hatched in. That would attract even more flies to lay more eggs, from the blood and sores. I am just guessing. It definitely reminded me of mango worms, which are also fly maggots.

Fly Larvae can hatch in matter of night.
@Junyrmint16
@Junyrmint16 24 күн бұрын
Sheep are prey animals, they hide illness very well until they feel so unwell that they isolate themselves like Rambo was doing. Notice the larvae wasn't visible until the ram was sheared with the clippers. Herds that are out free range grazing are checked on frequently, but they're very skittish and basically wild sometimes. Flocks and herds get checked as often as possible for vet visits, shearing (if they're sheep), and hoof trimmings. As well as deworming/pest control. Sometimes bad things just happen no matter how much you try to prevent it. Pest issues like this can pop up quite literally overnight, flies breed fast and grow fast.
