Edit: some of these such as entrapta and Sheldon Cooper have questionable canonisity. Though most of them are completely canon
I think it's important to represent disability so I made this. In the grand scheme of things this isn't many. However, it's good that disabled people get representation and I hope to contribute with my web series!
This contains: wheelchair users, autism, phocomelia, stutter, dyslexia, rhotacism, ADHD lambdacism, lisps, blindness and deafness
Loud house
Avatar the last airbender
Luca
She-ra and the pricess of power
Bluey
Marvel cinematic universe
A silent voice
Sesame street
The owl house
Big city greens
Hank zipzer
Looney tunes
Peppa pig
One peice
IT
big bang theory

@@LandOfTheEnigma from what I found online they all are. There is some controversy around Sheldon and entrapta but many were saying they are confirmed. For Sheldon he wasn't originally supposed to be autistic and is just a smart man child (hence why he's antagonistic at the start) but he did end up being very much autistic. An example would be in young sheldon when missy (I think that's her name) can tell exactly what's happening in photos but sheldon can't. That definitely is an autistic trait. However, I will add to the description that some are questionably canon and that I found conflicting answers on canonisity

Fun fact: Porky was never meant to be stuttering, the voice actor had this problem so recording sessions could be long because of how much he stuttered. If it stood with the character of Porky it's because it sounded well in his character.

To be honest. When I saw Toph at first I didn't even know she had vision problems. Her earth bending makes her completely in tune with her surroundings working as a form of artificial vision of sorts allowing her to sense things even though she can't see normally through her eyes. That and the fact that she's a capable fighter as well. I mean I guess the greyed out eyes implied something was wrong with her vision but I just glossed over it when I first saw the show. I guess though this is what makes Toph cool as a character. She may be blind but she doesn't let it weigh her down. She is in tune with the earth around her to the point where she doesn't even need help finding her way around. She's capable on her own and is a very strong fighter.

Like yeah if it's intentionally insensitive then it can be brought up but I don't think the creators were trying to depict ADHD that way. Heck the entire context of the clip is from an episode where cricket's family helps him to find a way to read that his ADHD can agree with, and helping him not get punished by the librarians just for doing stuff people with ADHD tend to do.

@projecty.b.t.f.c
@projecty.b.t.f.c Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't have thought of them when being asked to list disabilities but it is a disability. This is because it is the inability to make certain sound with your mouth. This can be due to many different reasons. People also descriminate against people with speech impediments Edit: they also get infantalised because of inability to make certain noises being related to children. I know someone with lambdacism and rhotacism who has gone through infantalisation and bullying over it Edit 2: also speech impediments can be the result/cause other disabilities. Untreated speech impediments can cause people to have struggle learning to read and write. People with dysarthria slur their speech due to brain damage whereas ankyloglossia and apraxia is a result of the brain not being able to move the toungue properly (varying in how extreme)

Gabriela from the Little Mermaid series was deaf but she still wanted to sing since she liked doing it so much, in her debut she tried going to a starfish that said he could heal her but he turned out to be a fraud and Gabriela learned that she didn't need to be fixed and that she was able to sign beautifully due to Ariel's encouragement. Garrett from Quest for Camelot is blind but he doesn't treat that as an obstruction he's still charming and comedic, he uses his knowledge of his environment to his advantage and he's pretty skilled at hand to hand combat. Chrissie from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood needs to wear metal brace crutches to help get herself around since her legs were paralyzed at birth. Hannah from Fireman Sam has to use a wheelchair since she was born with a walking disability. Max who's also from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is Autistic he hates flashing colors, lights and certain fabrics but likes buses and bugs, he's also voiced by an autistic actor. Bruno from All Engines Go is Autistic as well, he loves being a detective and having fun but takes a little longer to get used to change and hates loud noises, he's also voiced by an autistic actor. Twyla from Monster High has also been confirmed to be Autistic. Scootaloo from Gen 4 of My Little Pony is technically representation of congenital upper limb deficiency, which is where both arms or wings in her case are not properly developed. Aqua Marina from Stingray is mute, she's only able to communicate with others using a tap system or telepathy but that doesn't stop her from rescuing her friends from danger in the sea. Marlee from Blue's Clues is deaf and uses sign language to communicate with Joe and Blue, fun fact Blue's Clues was one of the first preschool shows to incorporate sign language. Elisa from the Shape of Water is mute and uses sign language to communicate. Mikey from Rise of the TMNT has been confirmed to have ADHD and Donnie has been confirmed to have Autism. DJ from Star Wars: The Last Jedi has a speech impediment/stutter, fun fact his actor is the one that came up with the stutter. Silhouette from the Marvel Comics was a human mutant paralyzed from the waist down by a bullet injury and now uses metal brace crutches to get around, she has the ability to manipulate shadows and teleport. Garrett Miller from Extreme Ghostbusters uses a wheelchair to get around since his legs don't work, but he's still and avid sports fan and wants to major in physical therapy. Mikey from the Goonies has Asthma which he constantly uses an inhaler throughout the entire movie.

One of my friends has speech impediment since birth. She always speaks with sheeshing sounds so it's sometimes hard to understand what she says but I always try to. She was bullied in her childhood for her voice + she has health problems + she was raised by strict parents (especially very nervous angry mother) in multiple children family, so it is very struggling for her. She even said me her voice condition will become worse in years. It's great to see that my friend isn't alone with her condition, even if it's fictional character.

okay- since I'm autistic the fact that disabilities like autism, wheelchairs, prosthetics, etc are more prominent in media now than when I was younger makes me SO HAPPY. when I was a younger, I was basically taught that I wasn't normal, and that nobody with disabilities was normal, WHICH ISNT TRUE. It really holds up the fact that representation DOES MATTER.

as a teen with autism. I'm 90 percent sure that jack from bluey has autism. pretty much everything jack does in his screen time I did at some point in my early childhood. which means he likely pretty high functioning. so much so that it seems like adhd but is more likely asd.
@projecty.b.t.f.c
@projecty.b.t.f.c 9 ай бұрын
Yep, I'd quite prefer him being autistic as someone who is also a teen with autism. The main consensus is that he has Adhd though. It's no impossible to have both so maybe that's the case. By the way we don't really use functioning labels anymore due to what they imply about a person. Very simple mistake so don't worry about it :)
@datroo5024
@datroo5024 9 ай бұрын
@@projecty.b.t.f.c the only reason that I use functioning lables is because A I don't remember which way on the spectrum I am. and B everyone I know uses it and has used it all my life so I just do it because it's the way I grew up. I could use asburgers syndrome but that phrase is kinda even worse because of who dr asburgers was lol.
@projecty.b.t.f.c
@projecty.b.t.f.c 6 ай бұрын
Ah, you see that's the issue. We don't use functioning labels for a reason and considering what you just said I can see why you don't understand. You can't be on one side of the spectrum because it isn't a line spectrum that goes "mild -> severe". It a circle and there are multiple different places you might fall within that spectrum based on you and who you are. That's why you can't be "low" or "high" functioning. It also creates a negative stigma around "low functionality" as it sounds negative. That's why we say "with more support needs". It also means people that are high functioning might be rejected support if they sound fully capable from the "high functioning". My sister sees it differently and says it implies that she doesn't function like everyone else and that she just is highly working but not quite there which is offensive Edit: to help explain since you actually seem to care, functioning labels don't really work because there's no way to blanketly classify someone as "high functioning". I'm highly academic but I'm hopeless socially. It has left me lost and isolated. I'm getting better btw, unrelated but there. My other friend who is autistic often finds himself covering his ears in sensory overload in shops, is dyspraxic, dyslexic and requires a computer and a reading pen for tests. He occasionally needs a learning assistant in the room. Yet he's fine at social stuff. Of course not perfect but he's far better than me. He gets anxiety but he will order things for me in shops because I panic at every turn about talking to people. There's another person who will remain for more anonymous than the other two for reasons you'll see soon. He hardly speaks to anyone, especially if his brother isn't around. He can't handle large groups of people or lots of attention or he will run and hide. He has had to be restrained before. Restraining should be a last ditch effort to be clear. However, he is super smart in the areas of planets and geography. Basically super academic. And lastly, I know another person who is the best at science in the whole of my year but literally is away from anyone else in every situation. In the morning they just go straight to tutor, they don't sit with anyone at break or lunch even if their friends are right there in the sane room as them. They even have migrated to the school kitchen to get away as far as I know. In short, autism comes in all shapes and sizes so you can't be high or low functioning because the blanket term disregards so much for autistic individuals

Walter from The 2011 Muppet Movie feels very autistic coded to me! The way his love for the Muppets is so central to his life is very relatable to me personally. (Has anyone actually seen the 2011 Muppet Movie or am I the only one who's absolutely obsessed with it?-)

The Muppet Movie and the sequel are such cozy movies, I'm so glad other people remember it 😭 also I agree with you about Walter. Being a Muppet born into a human family is a pretty blatant metaphor for being "different" imo.

I love that movie! I have seen it so many times and I agree that Walter could be autistic-coded. His love for the Muppets could be his "narrowed" interest. Funny how Jim Parsons plays his real-life equivalent in the musical number who is also speculated to be playing an autistic-coded character?! (Sheldon) I LOVE Muppets Most Wanted

I'm autistic and I realize about it some weeks ago, it was a bit hard to process but I started to accept it. That character from She-Ra makes me feel so relatable , also with Julia from Sesame Street.

Wilt from Foster's home for imaginary friends is a first main character with disabilities in Cartoon Network series. He has no arm, he has lazy eye and he is traumatized(not PTSD)

I never realized I was autistic for a while, but seeing that juilia character brought tears too my eyes. I also got super upset, whenever I heard sirens or a super loud car. I hated football games because everyone would scream and the music would be super loud. I don’t do it anymore but I didn’t realize that was an autistic trait until now
