I personally just play it like the nightmare modifier from demoncrawl, where you can't flag. You just have to remember what is a mine

I actually made a tool for myself which lets me generate completely random minesweeper boards of any size, and then I shared my newly generated boards for people to solve in chats. Good times.

Some of those minesweeper boards are formatted badly as messages, they should begin with a linebreak (requiring a character before it to count) otherwise the first line will be indented on compact mode >:(

Not as cursed as the minesweeper game I played that had imaginary mines and negative mines and lying numbers... You may find a 1 and it's actually a 3, so you have to use other numbers to determine if it's possible for a number to be real. Finding a tile that's 7+4i hurts.
