I still remember my first campaign of Five Parsecs. I had a runaway miner, their droid, a secret agent with a cybernetic hand, a weird guy with a nifty scarf who insisted he was some kind of doctor and a klingon style warrior race type on the lookout for love. First contract resulted in the world being assimilated by what are basically the Borg, but at least I got to pay off the loan on the ship.

🤣🤣🤣🤣😱 That would be a great name for a CoC scenario. I agree about Carnacki, the Ghost Hunter. They are stories with their own, very strange atmosphere.

I had the idea of taking players completely new to Call of Cthulhu, have never played it before, and presenting the ruleset as a more mundane mystery roleplaying game. They don't even know "Cthulhu Mythos" is a stat until they're made to roll for it. And you run them through a few mundane mysteries, or ones of a more ambiguous nature. Get them comfortable with the mechanics, while leaving them in the dark as to whether the supernatural actually exists in the game world or not. Then, at a certain point, hit them with a Shaggoth or something. Remove the veil, and watch the chaos.

23:54 - Battle Systems terrain is absolutely incredible. I've purchased a large number of their fantasy and sci-fi kits over the last two years, and they've made my games look astounding. Be warned: they're almost impossible to build without watching the tutorials at the same time, and if you want the terrain to last, I'd strongly suggest that you reinforce it with PVA or hot glue to keep it together and store it. Otherwise, you end up having to assemble it each time you want to play games with it.

Glad to see you picked up Bushido, it's been one that I was thinking of recommending to you. If you're into Blood & Sandals type setting, Arena Rex could be interesting. In regards to Conquest, you're right that the seem to be following the GW business line; they did just redo their skirmish level game 'Conquest: First Blood' to make it an easier/cheaper entry point into their game system.

My FLGS actually has a bunch of TurboDork paint in stock. I've eschewed it for a while, because of the price, but now that you mention it, the two-tone paints give me ideas. I've recently bought some Horrors of Tzeentch, for use at the skirmish level. And I've had the idea of basing them reminiscent of bismuth crystals. Concentric squares, in multi-colored metallics. Still trying to figure out how exactly I'll go the shape, but some two-tone paints from TurboDork might be just what the doctor ordered. Gonna need to give this a good think.

Black Scorpion minis are TEH AWESOME. The Breninmoor Mercs are a great line, and I'm collecting them as soon as they're released. Also, I backed their Western KS they did a few years ago, so I have a bunch of cowboys (and cowgirls). Try their very own Tombstone ruleset for western-themed games, it's good! Also Battlesystems is great for terrain, I have the village-ruined-village-ruined monastery combo that works for a whole lot of different games, from Frostgrave to Age of Sigmar. If you get a few sets, they're very much cross- compatible - well, at least within a theme like fantasy or sci-fi, etc.

I just started buying the Battle Systems terrain. I'm not sure if I like it because it reminds me of cardstock Legos or I just like the fact that my terrain takes me less time to assemble than my minis. Bonus that it's already painted. A tip from the manufacturer: run a razor knife around the parts that remove to get rid f the nubs that remain and use a marker to color the edges so it looks better. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to the convention!

Glad to hear you enjoyed the event :) I was volunteering there for my 6th year; so I was pleased to see how big the event was, especially compared to the reduced 2021 show. Battle Systems has me in a bit of a love-hate thing: I love the fact that you get a whole battlefield in a box, and they address a wide range of themes; but I personally like full 3D for the terrain I use, so the flat, printed card nature is an irrational put-off for me.
