Very interesting. My dishwasher does not have an air gap. My kitchen is relatively new and the dishwasher is quite new. Should I have an air gap

I believe in California it is required. Not all states require an air gap.

The air gap is to prevent contaminated dish sink water from going back into the dishwasher. Most States just require that the dishwasher discharge hose be mounted to the height of the bottom of the countertop. This Technique will also prevents Contaminated water from going back into the dishwasher also.

First time seeing a air cap on sink. We don't use those where I'm from. We use a air arrestor.

First you need to check if the person who installed the garbage disposal removed the blank on the drain hole on the garbage disposal. It need to be drilled out or punch out.

Well yes! This is a great point but this video is more meant for people who have had a garbage disposal forever but if you did just get one installed then yes that is most likely the issue! Thanks!

The first home I purchased was brand new and the first time I ever had a dishwasher. The water came out of the air gap for nine years I never know the it was not normal. When I changed the garbage disposal I read the instructions and it said to remove the blank in the drain air gap. That was 26 years ago. No KZfaq back then. This might help someone.

@@tazassassin if you look inside the drain tube on the garage disposal (about one inch) the hole dose not go all the way through. That because if you don’t have a dishwasher then you just leave it alone and doesn’t need a cap over it. But if you do have a dishwasher you need drill out the black so water from your dishwasher can drain into the garage disposal.

I took all my hoses out and cleaned them out. There was no clog but I still get water coming out.

Did you just replace the garbage disposal? There is a plug in the garbage disposal that needs to be knocked out so that the water will properly drain into it from the air gap. I would check this

@@handymanjourney We don't have a garage disposal. We have a P trap with a vent fitting after the trap then heads to the septic. The sink doesn't get backed up otherwise I would think P trap was clogged.

@@canetiberius7050 replace the air gap. I accidentally chipped a plastic piece off when I was cleaning it and it started leaking water. I had to run to home depot and buy a new air gap piece to replace and it fixed the problem.

@@El_LeChErO91 Thanks, I also replaced the air gap hoping maybe that was the problem. No change unfortunately, I am at the point that I believe the flow from the dishwasher drain is too much for the p trap to drain in time causing it to vent out the air gap.

@@canetiberius7050 follow the drain hose that leads from the washer to the food disposal. I took the end off that is connected on the food disposal side and ran some water through it and man all kinds of nasty gunk came out
