The Cygnus is such an intriguing ship design - from the early concept art right through to the actual model you could see it evokes majesty, lightness, stateliness, volume and vastness. It also strikes a balance between 'old' 'dated' and 'universal', with its allusions to cathedrals and tensile structures. Modern day sci fi ships are very tight, compressed and submarine-like - here we have a ship where you could breathe, swing your arms about, and marvel at its grandeur. It's multi-level control room, with vast views and arrays of lit consoles, is a stark contrast to the tight bridge designs of recent years. It does make you think of what people envisaged would be important in the past, of the future: here is a ship that one dreams about - and worth striving for.

Vincent & Bob's eyes were actually just a coat's buttons. When in dire need just use gum and glue to fix any problem..LOL! That's a special effects tip.

When I saw The Black Hole all those years ago I couldn't believe Disney actually made this. I was used the usual crop of family oriented movies with a lightweight theme. The Black Hole was the total opposite of a typical Disney movie and the first Gothic horror adapted to a sci-fi theme that I'd ever seen. It took a few years before I'd see something like this again in a sci-fi flick.

Other creepy Disneys: The Watcher in the Woods Something Wicked This Way Comes Shame the modern Disney doesn't take such creative risks anymore. Today, it's all live-action remakes and CGI Happy Meal meh.

Thanks for the video. This was one hell of a good movie, especially since cgi wasn't even thought of back then.

The Cygnus was one of the coolest ship designs in the history of film.

0:35 I do believe that the laser guns that Starlord uses in the Guardians of the Galaxy films were inspired by the Black Hole. really unique looking laser guns. very different from the blasters from Star Wars. I like it.

Wonderful stuff... The USS Cygnus makes less than zero sense from a standpoint of design, engineering, efficiency of interior space, redundancy, safety or survivability, but it has always stuck in my memory and even now I'm still finding new details.

I first saw this movie when I was 8-10 years old, and watched it a few times since over the years. Some of the imagery from this film has stayed with me -- the intricate engineered ship with the black hole in the background, the mirror faced workers, the big control center reveal, Maximillian (one of the best movie robots in my view), the great perspective of the tram on the track along the ship, the crew scaping the rolling ball of fire on the bridge. A lot of the dialogue was bad, and Vincent and his old timer buddy were goofy, but this was Disney and perhaps they were trying for a little lighthearted relief. Overall, excellent visuals in this film, but trying too hard to compete with star wars with fight scenes, failed humor, and crew that felt more 1960s space than 1980s space.

yeah that meteor in the corridor was done before the rolling boulder in Raiders of the lost ark!

At :25 seconds, i read that originally the 2 main ROBOTS were to have a sophisticated set of L.E.Ds on their eyes (see photo again). The eyes were to have the expressions as LED readouts. However, technically it was not working out...time & budget were at their doorstep and out with the LEDs and in with the Disney eyes. Although you do get to see VINCENTS chest readouts.

One of my favorite movies from childhood. Always did get a bad rap, but the movie was made for kids, I was 9 when it came out and it had about the same effect on me as Star Wars did the Heaven and Hell ending with that mesmerizing John Barry musical score should have won an Oscar by itself!

Has anyone made a solid documentary of this film? I'd love to know the story behind production.

+Guernicaman There's a 15 minute doc on the Disney DVD. Short but interesting.

There was a box tin VHS released by Anchor Bay that had tons of behind the scenes information compiled in a book. I own it, a very nice set and a beautiful tin featuring the Cygnus. Also, there is an old issue of Cinefantastique Magazine that you can find on Ebay that goes very in depth about the making of the film.

so great. Always one of my favorites. I thought they blew the ending tho. Even as a kid I thought the ending was stupid. Every other part of the film is masterful.

Tiene momentos y efectos geniales y licencias inperdonables pero su mayor pecado es el look de los robots old boy y vincent ,yo hasta pasaria por alto ,toda esa ridicula alegoría sobre el infierno si es que borran a esos robots.

CGI is a tool. It can be used properly or badly. Depends on how it used and applied via certain methods at the end of the day.
@jamiebraswell55206 жыл бұрын
It is all about the people who use the CGI. Sadly, CGI has enabled a lot of hacks to call themselves filmmakers. Not all, though.
