I love Alex! He’s my go-to atheist when I need a fair and well articulated critique of Christian positions. His remarks on divine hiddenness needed to be better addressed on KZfaq and Gavin did not disappoint. Hope to see more interactions between the two of you in the future. A dialogue would be great!

People of all kinds please state if you are christian or muslim, atheists, agnostics or any combination of those and then if willing participate in the test. As well, looking for 5 good moral theist questions for atheists/agnostics. #1 You see a child drowning in a shallow pool and notice a person just watching that is able to save the child with no risk to themselves but is not, is that persons non action moral? #2 If you go to save the child, the man tells you to stop as he was told it was for the greater good, but he does not know what that is, do you continue to save the child? #3 Is it an act of justice to punish innocent people for the crimes of others? #4 If you were able to stop it and knew a person was about to grape a child would you stop it? #5 Would you consider a parent who put their kids in a room with a poison fruit and told the kids not to eat it but then also put the best con artist in the room with the children knowing the con artist will get the kids to eat the fruit and the parent does nothing to stop it a good parent?

@@samueljennings4809 I agree, as an atheist it is great to see apologists who steel man the argument and openly admit to struggling themselves. It makes it more relatable and genuine. I really respect these guys for their good nature and deep consideration of such topics.

I accepted Christ in 2012. Prior to that I was an atheist for intellectual reasons. Even after coming to faith, and casting all my hope on the historicity of the resurrection of Christ. I’ve always had seasons of deep existential angst. I’m the type of person that thinks about the sureness of death everyday. Not morbidly, just factually and the implications of it. The what if I’m wrong thoughts. This video was profoundly impactful to my heart. Specifically starting at the 50 minute mark and forward. I was actually brought to tears and then full on crying. 51-54 minutes was incredibly powerful. I’ve never thought of faith in this manner. The very thing that is ambiguous is the very thing that Christ uses to create a true relationship. In college philosophy classes Pascal’s wager is almost dismissed as some kind of elementary argument that isn’t worth much thought but now hearing much of the reasoning I think it’s an argument of great substance like I’ve never known before. I know all humans struggle at times wondering why keep going with my work? Is this worth my effort? Am I having a real impact? Just know this. This video has impacted me permanently, for the rest of my life. Your ministry is like water in the desert for those of us who wrestle with existential thoughts.

If you were a child, and you had a father and a mother out there you were unaware of, would you also like it if they gave you clues that you could never be sure of as to their existence? Would you like to be led around based on hope and desperation in that way? Would you do that as a parent to YOUR kids?? Would you say that "strengthens" your relationship with them or would you say it creates a tortured and cruel existence? Oh yes, you will form a relationship with God. It will be one where you force your brain to believe things you're not sure about, resulting in cognitive dissonance and confusion. And eventually, your brain will collapse out of exhaustion and either believe in God because you broke it so thoroughly that it gave up, or it will give up on God entirely. I find it really hard to believe that this is a wondrous relationship. It sounds more like coping lol :P

I was an avowed atheist for 10+ years, studied science intently, and read everything Dawkins ever wrote. In 2015, I had a brush with death that I shouldn't have survived, and I had nothing to take away from it but sheer existential terror. Gradually, grudgingly, I came back to Christ and found that I never really stopped believing, I had just been angry at God for years. Once I fully committed to my faith, the beauty and symmetry of scripture began to click in a way that it hadn't before, thanks in no small part to channels like yours.

Translation: “Like most of humanity, death is scary to me. Once, I got close to death and sought out something that had a pleasant answer to death. Christianity fills my practical needs, so I’ll believe it!” Not hating on how death is terrifying. It’s the same for we the godless. But…does that make it true? Is it possible that it’s just a human invention to answer our deepest fears?

I have watched a few of Alex O’Connor’s debates with Bishop Barron. He comes across as someone who is genuinely seeking God. To me I don’t think Alex or anyone will come up with an answer that he will be satisfied with. His conversion will be very simple. Saint Augustine comes to mind. Too late have I loved you, O Beauty so ancient, O Beauty so new. Too late have I loved you! You were within me but I was outside myself, and there I sought you! In my weakness I ran after the beauty of the things you have made. You were with me, and I was not with you. The things you have made kept me from you - the things which would have no being unless they existed in you! You have called, you have cried, and you have pierced my deafness. You have radiated forth, you have shined out brightly, and you have dispelled my blindness. You have sent forth your fragrance, and I have breathed it in, and I long for you. I have tasted you, and I hunger and thirst for you. You have touched me, and I ardently desire your peace. (Confessions, X, 27, 38)

In case you are still dealing with this issue, I thought I'd share where Pascal was coming from when he said God is the God who hides. Isaiah 59:1-2. "Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear. But your wrongdoings have caused a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear." Later in the chapter, we get a glimpse of how he reveals. When none were found righteous, "none to intercede," "His own arm brought salvation to him." Now, if you read Isaiah 53, you will see, "Who has believed our report and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?" The chapter goes on to describe Jesus in his life and sacrificial death, concluding with "He bore the sins of many and interceded for the transgressors." t I hope this helps.

God reveals himself to people in the ways that he chooses. To some first century people, he gave direct miracles. To a handful of his followers, he revealed his glory at the transfiguration. But to the scribes and Pharisees who demanded a sign, he said, 'An evil and wicked generation will seek a sign, but none will be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.' (Matthew 12:39) After the resurrection and Pentecost, he gives assurance to followers in the life in the Spirit. (Romans chapter 8) As a person who lived most of my sixty years of life as an atheist, I understand the temptation to rely on the intellect. But trust isn't primarily about the intellect. It's about being open to him being to Being, and not needing to have everything explained. When one surrenders one's identity and self-ishness, and is open to relationship based simply on being, then the Spirit is free to move in ways we could never have imagined, drawing us ever closer. And our relationship to other people and the world around us also changes, with love becoming the outcome.

As someone who has heard the voice of God speak directly to me, and tell me in no uncertain terms what would happen in the immediate future if I stepped out in faith, and then had it confirmed when I indeed responded to His voice. I can tell you, that I *_still_* struggle with the "Problem of Divine Hiddenness", and this is something I don't think people consider enough. I have heard the voice of God, and yet now, 24 years later, I can look back at that time and doubt, "Did I _really_ hear God's voice?" "Am I misremembering?" "Was it just emotionalism?" "Did I exaggerate it out of my excitement?" so on, and so forth. See, when I am struggling with doubts and fears, I don't look back at that time I heard God's voice, because that just invites more doubts, and more fears... Rather, I look to the Word of God written down for us, through the ages, the Prophetic Word that has been tried and tested, and has shown itself true and faithful. I look to the Prophesies that spoke of the coming of the Messiah, and to those Prophesies fulfilled in Christ. That is the ground that I stand on. And whilst it is amazing when I do enter into, and experience mere glimpses of God's presence, and those experiences can give me strength in those moments to get through hard times, or face difficult situations. They are not what sustains my faith. "And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation. For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." ~ 2 Peter 1:18-21

I’m genuinely thrilled to have stumbled upon your channel, and this video in particular has resonated deeply with me. The problem of evil and its intricate connection to divine hiddenness is something I ponder regularly. It’s intriguing to hear people casually suggest that if God truly existed, a ‘better’ universe could have been created. This often leads me to question, “How would that ‘better’ universe actually look, and in what ways would it be different from our current one?” I believe this topic isn’t explored with the depth and seriousness it deserves, which is why finding content like yours is so refreshing. It opens up a fascinating and complex discussion that challenges us to think more profoundly about these existential questions. Kudos to you for tackling such a thought-provoking subject, and a heartfelt thank you for speaking into this important conversation. 😊

Funny enough when I wasn’t a Christian the Divine Hiddenness argument always seemed the most persuasive. Much more than the problem of evil. Never felt any weight from that argument, not even as a kid. But this argument I’ve always thought was the best for a person like myself, but I still think it falls short of anything other than the subject’s first person persuasions and history. Alex is right. Kierkegaard is better. No one is to come to God by argument. Something else is in the pudding. God rest

In fact, it was just on Friday that I had an explicit thought how surprising it is that God's existence and the truth of the gospel aren't overtly obvious, and it seems like it should be for something this important -- probably the most important issue in all of human existence. I also appreciate that you didn't dismiss Alex's argument and took it seriously. This is amazing! I had such wonderful “eureka!” Moment watching this “faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.” Divine hiddenness required faith. Gavin, I have appreciated so many of your videos in helping me understand and deepen my walk with Christ. I have also been researching Catholicism and have found your work very honest, helpful, and comforting. Praise be to God! I had a mental connection moment between this topic and the topic of an infallible teaching magisterium. Many times I have heard the argument, “without an infallible teaching magisterium that would be we are just left to our own devices and God is not loving, so there must be an infallible teaching office.” The quote, “God wants a change of will, not of intellect” plays into this where the infallible magisterium would cause a change of intellect but not of will. Maybe some content for a more in depth analysis of this topic? I would love for you to do a video if you have time on this. Thank you and God bless. God is good.

This is a great video! You make a really good point about imposing our expectations on what a loving God would do onto God. I remember Tim Keller saying, "God would answer every prayer you prayed if you wanted what he wants (e.g. what perfect Goodness wants) *and* knew what he knew, or something to that effect. Ive been toying around too with the difference the Biblical narrative makes in terms of a fit between the sense of divine hiddenness and the judgment of exile following the Fall. Namely, divine hiddenness--in its felt shape and force as a kind of existential barrenness--may well be the phenomenological "what it is like to be" of the Fall. Now, of course, one could argue that kicks the ball back--why did God permit such a Fall that would result in existential barrenness? But then the problem of divine hiddenness collapses at that point to the problem of evil, again.

I have to admit that I had not heard about Gavin Ortlund before; I have now subscribed to his channel. 2 - Alex O-Connor is rapidly developing as the best atheist friend of many Christians As a passionate born-again Christian, I am also a big fan of Alex. It is refreshing to hear somebody who, at the same time, can be eloquent and determined about their own views while respectful of others' viewpoints and beliefs. A recent video of his on God's hiddenness had me quite a bit stumped. As I had been wrestling with that concept, even asking for God's help 😊, I feel it's been delivered in the shape of a fabulous response from Gavin Ortlund. I'd buy a ticket to an event to see those two debate or more appropriately converse.

These justifications of God's hiddenness seam built to help a believer get from 1 to 100, but as a nonbeliever I still need to get from 0 to 1. I sincerely claimed the title of Christian for 20 years. It was always described to me that being a Christian meant a relationship with Jesus Christ, a very literal relationship. And I saw this relationship evidenced in those around me. But a few years ago I realized I didn't have the same relationship claimed by my family. When I was honest with myself, the relationship I had claimed for so many years was entirely one sided, hardly something that could even be called relationship. It hurt a lot, but after a few days I admitted that I could not honestly call myself a Christian. With the new perspective this gave me, I looked back over my life and realized I had zero experience to tell me anything supernatural exists. I still need to get from 0 to 1 on these questions: - supernaturals existence - God's existence - Christian God's existence That's my story of divine hiddenness

I’m so glad you pointed out the hiddenness theme in scripture. I think it shows, like you said, that hiddenness has been an issue from the beginning and it is indeed apart of the judeo-Christian tradition. Lament psalms, lamentations, Job etc. have been an absolute lifeline for me for a long time because they give a MEANING to our experiences of hiddenness. It shows that hiddenness need not inexorably lead to atheism, but that indeed it is a genuine part of faith. I could give an even longer response on the possibility of hiddenness producing an even greater intimacy with God, but that would need a book. These experiences have the possibility of conforming us more deeply to the image of Christ, in ways that would not be possible without them.

I have to say, I strongly disagree with what you term historical examples of divine hiddenness in Judaism and Christianity as it relates to the divine hiddenness argument. The word hiddenness is used in both cases, but it seems to be a clear conflation of unrelated ideas. In your examples, these are people that truly and strongly believe that God exists and are calling out to him to understand why they cannot see or feel him. They have what they feel is a sufficient warrant to believe a God exists, but don't understand why they can't seem to access him or see him working in the world. In the argument from divine hiddenness, it is referring to people that have searched for God and have realized they do not believe there is any God out there to call out to, that don't just feel their relationship is insufficient but that they have no warrant to think there is a relationship at all. As far as they can tell, however much they may WANT to believe there is a God that wants to have a relationship with them, that God does not exist. Being in such a position myself, I don't see any of what I believe and feel reflected in the quotes you have given. I don't see any way I could honestly cry out to a God to ask why I cannot see him, because I don't believe that God exists to cry out to. It would feel like mere play acting for the benefit of the Christians telling me that's what I'm supposed to do to gain access to the hidden truth of God they have access to, with the only likely outcome that if I still do not receive some revelation by which I become convinced that their God (or at least some theistic deity) exists, I will be blamed for being unable to call out sincerely enough to the very thing I don't believe exists. Admittedly, I can see why this argument would be much stronger and more convincing to myself knowing the interior of my mind and attitude than it would be to others. But I'd be much more impressed if Christians and Christianity had historically said that it was okay and reasonable to not believe that a God exists at all because sometimes he just wouldn't be apparent, even if encouraging people to accept a belief in their God, with the core of the message being the love of God for all people regardless of what propositions they are personally convinced are true. Unfortunately, the messaging is generally exactly the opposite of that.

In regards to your comments that we can't place expectations on how God's love operates because he is so much greater than us, I think you are missing a key part of the argument from divine hiddenness. The argument is not that God is reaching out in the wrong ways that surprise and confuse us. It's that there is ALREADY an expectation in place (definitely at least in Christianity) that a perfectly loving God would not reject someone that desired a relationship with them, that he WANTS people to know he exists and what his nature is because he is good for the people he created. And that expectation is violated when people that would desire such a relationship find themselves with insufficient means provided of ANY type, regardless of what unexpected and surprising methods God could choose to use, in order to meet the bare minimum requirement for a relationship of being convinced that the other person involved in that relationship exists at all. A more detailed outline of this key part of Schellenburg's argument that I believe is explained more in another portion of the book is that this God is also defined as good, in fact being the very source of all goodness and life that exists. Given that, it seems contradictory to say that that God's goal was to create people in such a way that it was better for them to be unaware of his existence than to be able to relate to and access that very source of goodness and life itself. To deny this and say that our purpose to have a relationship with God is at odds with God's will is to assert that God willed to created some people such that it would be better for them to not know or even believe that he exists, that their ultimate good is something OTHER than God himself. Or that he created some people that he loves but for whom his purpose was not their ultimate good, or that he was unable to achieve their ultimate good.

That's a good point. Wouldn't a truly loving God leave belief up to choice? If the evidence was so overwhelming that nonresistant nonbelief would be impossible, doesn't that eliminate the free will choice of the nonresistant nonbeliever?
@TheRockofGod21
@TheRockofGod21 8 ай бұрын
@@emmadasilva1794 I would think so, because, in my opinion, "Nonresistant, nonbelief" doesn't mean that you WILL be convinced of a topic, it just means that you have a higher likelihood of accepting the premise of the most subjectively compelling argument. In Alex's case, the most compelling argument for him is the nonexistence of God, but if he truly is nonresistant to convincing evidence of God, than it's entirely up to him to seek out the evidence that should be convincing. But that doesn't mean that he won't resist evidence presented to him by third party witnesses (such as Christians). so basically, he is resistant. personally I have a hard time believing there is such a thing as a "Nonresistant nonbeliever" because resistance is a matter of the heart, I am resistant to the likelihood of Islam being true, but that's to do more with evidence than anything. I am also resistant to the claims of atheism. I don't think you can claim to be "Nonresistant" when you work as hard as Alex does to refute the claims of Christianity. no slight against him meant, I just think if he was truly Nonresistant it would look much different.
@karlwinkler4223
@karlwinkler4223 8 ай бұрын
@@TheRockofGod21 I think the choice should be whether you follow Him or not rather than whether you believe that He exists or not. Biblical precedent also shows that people met face to face with God and still had the ability to chose to rebel against him, so the ability to choose would still be intact if God was physically present. I think it is also important to mention that someone can be a non-resistant non-believer and still put in a lot of work to share the reasons they don't believe. The amount of work Alex puts into his work does not demonstrate that he is resistant, it demonstrates that he puts a lot of effort into demonstrating why he finds the claims of Christianity unconvincing. Just a side note but evidence like the Shroud of Turin is laughably bad. It wasn't 'discovered' until thirteen hundred years after Jesus' death and is reliably dated to the time period that is was 'discovered'. It also does not align with the descriptions of Jesus' coverings in the Bible.
