I just could not bring myself to drop $150+ on a tailgate pad for our mountain bikes. I had the bright idea to try and make a mountain bike tailgate pad out of an old Treadmill mat. I was surprised to find the foam mat actually keeps the bikes in place pretty good and they do not slide around when driving. I just could not use my backup camera...
Of course I waited until the last day to try and make modifications to use the back up camera the day before our trip. This lead to some cutting and some gluing.
The best thing about all of this though was that it cost me nothing and it works.
If you are dumb enough to want to make this yourself here is a link to a similar mat on amazon.

Good luck out there!

I loved watching this project come together with no plan and all the mistakes. It looks like every DIY project I've ever done.

I love the idea We only travel with our bikes on vacations. No need for a fancy expensive truck mat I used an old Yoga mat and bungees like yours and it works great ! thanks

I have a Dakine Tailgate Pad but I actually prefer to use a yoga mat instead when transporting 1 or 2 bikes. Sinks in with no sliding. Easy to throw on and take off, no need for straps as bike will keep it in place. Fold in half, and half again in the back side if you want more cushion for frame. Black mat on black paint. I have an older truck so tailgate depth is much slimmer than newer trucks nowadays

Easy on, easy off, and cheap. A beautiful combo! 😀

Your vid gave me an idea! Since i dont have a treadmill mat, i’ll give it a try with a yoga mat! (Still i have to go and get one, but it’s quite cheap)

Awesome! Let me know how it works out! if you are trying to cover a smaller area like I ended up, a yoga mat could be perfect. 👍

Hope it works out for you. I'm a little sour about it in the video but the material has been holding up just fine 🙂.

A typical treadmill conveyor belt is very thin.. should work though but may mess up the truck paint.

This is a under pad to protect the carpet or hardware floor. It's not the running surface belt itself. It's more similar to a thick yoga pad.

I'll be using this method with an old moving blanket while I'm waiting on shipping for my Dakine pad, so I'm grateful for the video to get an idea how this is going to work for this weekend. That said, just buy a real pad, it seems weird to cheap out on the pad after you already spent several thousand dollars on the bikes.

You are right, but I'm a weird guy so 🤷. I suspect I will eventually end up a commercial pad but for now I will be using this same junker this weekend to get me to the trail. I'm actually thinking of making a 2.0 version of this for the heck of it 🤔😃😁

I like the effort...Do you expect the bikes to just stay there without a hold down strap?

That's the theory behind tailgate pads. Works good in my experience.

The angle of the down tube and the front fork kind of makes a wedge and the pad I use here is kind of rubbery/tacky. I have had a couple "oh shoot" moments and bikes have stayed in place. A strap may be an addition if I make a DIY 2.0 version!

Thanks for the info, but did you know that those heavy rubber matts are actually quite valuable? I wonder how much you could have sold it for.

Seems like there are a few less expensive options hitting the market. I actually have one sitting in the plastic right in front of me. Might have to get a video put together... 🤔
