My advice for what it's worth is to check and make sure you can remove the fill plug on both the transmission and the transfer case before you drain the fluid, just in case... it will save a lot of frustration.

I would change the filter also at same time to gearbox. And the bolt is seen next to front diff, bit over the the level of drain plug, just the front side of it. You also need to fill it on level until the extra comes out. Unlike with the gearbox level, you don't need to run a car while you fill it on final level. Nice video though.

Hello, Thanks for sharing the video. While removing the 17mm fill plug to add the oil I damaged the head. do you know what type of bolt it is so I can replace it? (size, thread etc) thanks.
@youaregoingtolovethis5 жыл бұрын
Let me guess you were using a 12 pt wrench or socket. For anything with that might require a lot of torque or force to remove always use 6 point only. 12 points are only for limited access where you can only get it from using a 12 point tool if a 6 point tool won't work or if the nut is a 12 pointed nut or bolt which I have yet to encounter. Otherwise always use 6 point.

Great Job, very good video n clear instructions. I am planning to do it too. I think if I do drain and refill twice it will remove most of the old fluid out from transmission, right?

The pre-Xdrive X5 uses automatic transmission fluid in the transfer case. Not sure about your X3 and if it is an Xdrive model, stick with the BMW recommended fluid.

might be a dumb question, but when you said "fill it up & then run/idle the engine, and then fill it up again" did you idle it with the fill plug bolt removed, and then literally top it off while the engine is running? Or, did you reinstall the fill plug, idle it for a while, turn off the engine, remove the fill bolt and then top it off again?

I'm trying to be cautious about what fluid to put in my 2002 bmw x5 auto trans 3.0 litre suv. Does it matter what type of dextron 3 fluid I use ? In the video you use a dextron 6. What is your opinion on what types of auto fluids to use.
@MINIzguy6 жыл бұрын
Dex 6 superceeds Dex 3, so it is fine to use. You can still use a Dex 3 without any problem, as that is what's in your transmission already. Buy anything that meets requirements of Dex 6 or Dex 3, the fluid meets the required specifications otherwise they cannot label it as such.

I've just done my 2005 x5 3.0 auto and the fill plug was a 8mm Allen key not a hex bolt. The exhaust system doesn't leave you a lot of room to get to the fill plug plus the fill plug head was filled with plastic had to heat up a metal rod to melt it out. Definitely not an easy job

If you drain your transmission completely and fill it up with only 5 quarts,you will destroy your transmission.You have to fill it up with 10 quarts of ATF(9.4 litres)

@MINIzguy Actually, we ended up destroying our 5L40E after doing a recent oil change.We filled 5 quarts of ATF after completely draining the transmission.We took it for a test drive and the transmission started overheating and went into Trans Failsafe program.We then discovered that the oil capacity was actually 10 quarts and it ended up taking another 5 quarts of Dex III,but we were too late as it had already damaged 1st and 2nd gear.There is now a grinding noise coming from the transmission

Jesus. I’m cringing at how many poor people’s cars have been destroyed because of you and this video. DO NOT DO THIS, PEOPLE!! There’s a REASON it says lifetime fill!! This dude doesn’t even explain why! Or how to check the trans fluid for debris to know the problem is something else that needs replacing. Doing this will likely DESTROY your transmission. Don’t do it!!

Lifetime oil.. yea, don't change it if you want your part lifetime to be same as oil has. Guess will the manufacturer like to sell new parts. If you ruin your car with not changing the oils, it's your stupidity. You need to change lifetime oil and drive with max 100tkm. It's a maximum, cheapest way to service your car is to change the oil regularly.
@amelr88193 жыл бұрын
Keeping the original fluid in there is not good. Changing it will extend the life of the transmission and make it work smoother and cooler. If you had problems before the transmission fluid change then changing your fluid is a 50/50 chance of fixing it. But if you didn’t have a problem, then you really shouldn’t have an issue changing. Now that being said just be cautious when doing it. I’ve seen bmws with 200k+ miles on the original fluid with no problems and I’ve seen X5’s getting a transmission service at 200k+ miles with absolutely no issues. Just a warning be careful, but this video is 100% spot on how to do it IMO. Just be careful and do it at your own risk as it can cause problems.
