DIY Camper Awning Self Recoiling! This awning build is for an overland truck with a camper shell. Two years ago I made the original camper awning for this truck. This is my friend Tony’s overland rig. He uses this truck on some pretty rough roads and our original $55 design lasted about a year and a half. The harbor freight tarp failed and the “rolling bar” mechanism allowed for too much wiggle throughout the frame. Another weak point In the design was the hinge points at the bottom of the upright legs.
In this video I corrected many of the issues from the first build and integrated a few new modifications to make this project awesome! I repurposed a patio shade from “Coolaroo” (model#457112) to give this design a self recoiling feature. I replaced the sun shade with a heavy canvas waterproof material. I custom cut and sewed the material making a weather proof awning. I was able salvage most of the frame materials from the original build. This time around I welded the frame solid to eliminate the “wiggle” problem and make a more sturdy design overall. The final upgrade were large welded hinge brackets to replace the EMT electrical conduit hangers. These new hinges make a great foundation for the frame to pivot from. My original design concept Is basically still intact with major upgrades!
