In many cases, a broken carbon frame is repairable. My cracked carbon road bike frame had a soft spot in the top tube that flexed when pressed. Clearly it had been dinged by a previous owner. It seemed like a perfect candidate to undergo a do it yourself carbon frame repair.
I bought a carbon fiber repair kit on ebay that consisted of a roll of carbon fiber cloth, epoxy, hardener, and instructions. The kit was $30 with free shipping. There are many such kits available, so just search for one.
Some carbon repair shops specialize in repairing and refinishing carbon frames. But based on the pricing I’ve seen, a professional repair on my cracked Specialized S-Works frame would cost over $400. That’s too much for me. Plus, I wanted to see how easy it would be to complete a DIY repair.
Some pro shops claim that nearly every carbon fiber frame can be repaired no matter how severe the damage. Even if the tubes are broken. And that repairs are stronger than the original bike, with no measurable additional weight, and don’t alter the bike’s ride. My frame was cracked, which is not all that severe, so I can’t say from personal experience. If I have any cracked or broken frames in the future, I will definitely be performing the repair myself. Overall I thought it was very quick and easy. The most time consuming part was sanding down the new epoxy.

This video was about a carbon fiber layup repair, not paint. I did not paint the repair. My understanding is that a raw finish is just as durable as a painted repair, and won’t scratch and chip like paint would. Raw finishes require no maintenance.

This video is superb ! It might help me save my Chinese Carbon frame which arrived with the front mech hanger hanging off because it was badly ( loosely ) riveted could I insert rivnuts into the three existing holes that the hanger has popped out of and bolt the hanger on ?

Nice and clear instructions. May I ask what drill bits (make and size) did you use to open the hole?

Good question. I used the wrong bit type and size (too small) so had to try and file the hole a little more than the size of the bit. My bits are imperial while the rivnut uses metric.

Thanks. I enjoyed watching that. You did that well and whilst filming it too! Did you paint the frame after you repaired it or are you meant to put more carbon fibre over it? May be you have kept it as is so it looks battle hardened! ;-)

I've ridden over 5000 miles on the frame after the repair. Keep in mind, tho, the the carbon damage was minimal to begin with.

Nice vid, really. Do you have an advice how to pull out rivnut and bolt that is stuck into rivnut and spinning together one with another? I suppose bolt stuck because of corrosion. I tried with clenchers to pull it out, but without success. Now rivnut is pressed around bolt, and cannot get out nor inside, it's loose... I suppose only solution is to rip it off with metal saw (get out the inside part through seat tube?) and try to get new rivnut, and glue it into hole... Thanks.

a small bit of epoxy at the base of the rivnut may be enough to temporarily glue it in place so you can remove the bolt. You can then decide to repair the existing rivnut or drill it out and replace it with a larger nut.

No, still haven't painted it. If your commuter bike looks too good in LA, it's more likely to get stolen.

Hi Martin, was trying to change bottle holders, unfortunately one of the bolts just turns loose. Thread is out probably. Any way to work around this? It's a carbon frame as well.

if you can't get the bolt out, prob best bet is to try needle nose vise grip pliers to hold the rivnut. May also try a tiny bit of superglue on the rivnet to the frame.

Hi! I dont understand all steps in you video. You do riveting? If yes, what a riveting size? My carbon frame is clamp for only one bottle. I want to make clamp for second bottle. You method work for it?

It's called a Riv-Nut. You can buy them on ebay. Yes, it works. Just drill a hole and install the riv-nut. Then your bottle cage can be mounted in its proper place.

I bay M4 and M5 but need tool for riveting. unfriendly price :( I heard, for Knauf rivets don't need tool. I find ebay tool at 20$

Yes, a bottle cage can be mounted on the seat tube as long as your frame is large enough for the bottle.

Hi there! Thanks for a great video, it was an enjoyable piece. I have a similar issue with a Specialized Roubaix where the bottle cage has ripped off. A local Specialized dealer installed some riv-nuts with epoxy to the holes left behind. They said that after the epoxy had set they wouldn't be too worried of the damage and that it would be safe to ride. Although they gave reassurance, I'm still a bit worried with the crack. Do you have an opinnion on the matter if you'd personally patch this up or just leave it be? Especially the crack from the lower nut that extends to the letter E looks bad in my eyes. I would ride the bike like it is without attempting any repairs. But if you have some spare time and are curious to try the repair, this would be a good, easy candidate. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply :) Might just leave it as it is then. Spotted some epoxy repair putty from the local hardware store that I was thinking of using to fill the dents and maybe sand the lower one a bit to see, that the crack hopefully doesn't go deeper than the paint, but I'll have to think it out. Thanks again!
