The before and after of my first ever elk hunt. 4th Rifle Season. This was a over the counter area in 2nd and 3rd rifle season. After I didn't draw, I looked through the left over list and just found the closest area to my wife's friends house that had a decent amount of public land. I had a gopro and camcorder with me, but left them in the jeep the first morning. I felt I was really testing what clothes I needed for hiking in this weather and getting myself acclimated for longer hikes in the following days. I didn't expect to stumble on to a nice bull so quickly. I feel there was a lot of beginners luck involved. But it can be done apparently.

Good work, Cocheran! Dang! I was googling all this because I was in Sand Creek Valley during the 4th Season, just a ridgeline over from GMU 82 (in GMU 86). I wasn't hunting, just walking around, and there was a lot of snow on the ground from the snow that was falling on you when you killed your bull. You nailed it! Congratulations!

Great hunt , congratulations! I would leave the bullet scar, makes it personal.. Elk hunting is a bucket list item for me, limited to hog and deer in Fl.

That's badass. Gives hope to us first timers. lol. I am panning to go on a DIY elk hunt in GMU 86, just over the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Did you hunt the west side of those mountains or somehwere different in 82? Also, how was the terrain, elevation adjustment? Thanks and good luck this year!

Wonderful Bull! I'm from Texas but looking to move to Colorado in the next couple years so I can hunt better public land. If you have any scouting tips for a newbie I'd really appreciate it. I'm a teacher so I will only have about 10 or 11 days out of the season, if I use all my days off. Because of this I'm going to try scouting up there this next week, trying to find some out of the way pockets to hunt. I'd love to know where you found those maps online. Thanks for the video!

Sorry it's been a couple weeks since you asked. I'm not on here much. The great on is on the colorado department of wildlife website. It's called the hunting atlas I believe. The other is just google earth. You can put satelite image on the hunting atlas as a background though. I really like the on-X maps app for my phone. Very helpful for staying on public and can download the map ahead of time and use it where you don't have a signal. I think I'm just getting lucky. But like everyone says, spots away form the road are best. And stay around areas with lots of sign.

Thanks for the info! I sprained my ankle so had to take a couple weeks, but I'm packed and headed out tomorrow, maybe I'll make a video of the trip and upload. I'm used to bush-wacking through overgrown and over-hunted texas public land. If you don't know, it's a nightmare. Seeing a deer out here, you sometimes aren't sure whether to shoot or take cover yourself. I'm ready for a change.

One thing I love about colorado is how there isn't thick underbrush most places. it's really steep and no oxygen but most of it is easy open walking.
