What up Fam? So I have wanted to build a gas forge for a while. The issue I have had is that most of them seem to require some kind of welding to take place. I have no way, currently to do said welding. But we are skill monkeys, damn it! If we want a forge we will make a forge! So I hope you enjoy watching my attempt at making a gas forge with NO WELDING REQUIRED!
That being said this gas forge build does use the explody juice and there IS danger involved. As such, I do not recommend this forge build without the supervision of an experienced professional.

WARNING. After using rigidizer you you ABSOLUTELY NEED to coat with a refractory cement. Rigidizer should be applied once the kaowool is installed as you you saw that folding it opened creases that were not exposed to the rigidizer. Rigidizer just helps keep fibers down while you're putting refractory on. Running that forge without refractory is DANGEROUS as just as many fibers that cause silicosis and cancer are being spewed out. THIS WILL RUIN YOUR LUNGS!

Be aware that the galvanized hardware you used will release highly toxic zinc fumes, I'd recommend using stainless steel instead

All stainless! I made sure not to use galvanized anything. Made that mistake with the foundry bucket

@@edwardhunts it is a thing I wish I said in the video. It's an important point. Super dangrous and, in a lot of hardware stores, the black pipe and the galvanized are side by side and someone might mix and match not knowing.

for paint removal, a wire wheel would work better on your grinder. heats up the paint less, and doesn't gum up like a flap disk.

Awesome no-weld build! Like you say, not everyone has or can justify buying a welder. So, your gas port turned out to be conveniently in the optimal place when you built that part, keeping the valve away from the forge. For other/future builds, I suggest assembling all the brass parts except the end cap, and aligning that in the reducer to place the valve, etc. in the angle desired, then mark/drill the gas port. When assembling pipes, you may not always get the parts rotated to where you want them, but NEVER unscrew them to reach the angle you want/need! Instead, tighten slowly to reach that point. Brass stretches, flexes, bends when its tightened. Loosening it can create leak points, even if it feels tightly assembled.

GREAT POINT! I am glad I lucky stumbled into a good configuration, I would have been so upset if the orifice was pointing up and the pipe was running into the body of the forge LOL.

for anyone who is using propane tanks... one of the vids i looked at a while back suggested filling the tank with water before making any cuts. just to be sure there is not gas left in the tank. I know its late, but I think i will ass this to the main comments

Love this build, will use it myself. Some satinite will make the ceramic fiber insulation much safer and last longer, and you won't need the second layer.

Turn a railroad spike into a classy knife/letter opener. Style it as you like! Railroad spikes are super easy to get and I've heard they're a great starter project for amateur blacksmiths to learn with. Rebar can also be used! (though I usually see rebar turned into medieval looking fork/knife/spoons)

Tip: if using a propane tank, before doing anything else, fill it completely with water then empty it. This will displace any residual propane and prevent any high-temperature unpleasantness.

Something worth looking at for extra safety is a Flash Back Arrestor/suppressor. Normally used for Oxy/Acetylene torches, you can also get them for other flammable gasses. Regulators don't always have them built in, even expensive ones. Should be able to get them from where you get your gas from. Otherwise welding suppliers do have them.

In a naturally aspirated propane system like this, there is no benefit in having a flashback arrestor. In a system running oxy, it's possible for oxygen to be forced back into the propane hose (or vice versa) which can create a combustible mix, but in this system that's impossible. Pure propane will not and can not burn without oxygen, and it is impossible for it to burn back up the hose or inside the bottle.

Nicely done ! Only thing though, it's only for outside projects (not udeable at all in the middle of winter). Ron Reil is the guy to check out for burner designs. You can get a little more efficiency out of them with an ITC-200 coating on the fibre.

One suggestion is to use some kind of cutting oil for your metal drilling and tapping. I’ve even used WD-40 when I was out of cutting oil. It will make the cuts easier, and help your bits to last a lot longer.

Just a tip. I believe that I saw your vise has two sets of jaws, it can be flipped yes? The bottom set of jaws is designed for pipe. You won't have issues with the pipe slipping out of the vise if you use the right jaws. Probably this will help with keeping you tap square as well.

🤣 Okay this is such an awesome video to find. I have one of those tanks that needs to be replaced and I was looking at it the other day thinking "Hmmm. This would make a really awesome little forge." Now you need to make a few crucibles for smelting, so that you can cast pendants, clasps, random cool shiny things.

I thought of that. I can replace it if need be but thus far the bottom hasn't gotten nearly to the temperature for it to be a concern. The spring, at its hottest, has gotten mildly uncomfortable to touch. I will keep you posted when it decides to give up the ghost

Fun video and this looks like a great project...BUT... The most dangerous bit isn't the burners, it's the insulation that you only soaked with rigidizer without covering it with refractory cement. Dude. YOU HAVE TO COVER THE INSULATION BLANKET WITH REFACTORY CEMENT. As long as that blanket can shed fibers, it's a hazard.

His burner is made with gas pipe which is black pipe and brass, Black Pipe is Not Galvanised, it is instead coated with a dissolvable coating in many cases just a oil, or a cheap lacquer coating on the black pipe is iron and rust readly. Coat with a barbecue paint and it won't rust do a burn in outside and you good to go. The pipe parts let dry overnight then heat them up with a torch let cool and you're good to go. Have even seen waxed coated black pipe. The feet on the other hand probably won't get hot enough to dispel zinc gas off due to the heat proofing material inside, this material works very well at keeping the majority of the heat on the inside. And you can make or even buy these angles and hinges in black iron for gates so that would be the way to go. though if worried about zinc poisoning just rough them up and spray with a barbecue paint let dry. Though always take every precaution and necessary steps for your safety and others. you can get a good refractory material by the bucket depends on your wallet. By the way the feet are quick scaled at the factory which means they are quick dipped and generally it is Galvanized then balled milled to get that shiny look, some are electroplated. Though some manufacturers use other metals or have other treatments to ward off rust as well. Why I would recommend that you just get some cheap iron Black fence brackets and hinges, you can find latches to, and iron stove bolts, if your going to use bolts. That resolves any issues you might have to begin with. These are just a hard black painted non galvanized iron. Surprised you didn't just make some rivets and riveted them on with your small forge. You can use 16 penny nails non galvanised , that's the common nail used in most structural carpentry. Just cut to length, heat till a nice cherry red, and rivet them in place. I use to use those very brackets under houses because they didn't rust. It really is a good little furnace by the way for small projects, annealing and hardening or metal working projects. If you want to get into metal welding the old fashioned way, get some 20 Mule Team laundry soap as it's nothing but straight 100% Borax. Which is what to use for your flux, for metal forging and welding. A box will last you for years, just keep it dry. You don't need to buy any special fluxes for forging and welding doing blacksmithing.

Other note: Files only cut in one direction, if you drag them back over the edge you will dull them faster.

Love the design, but encourage caution when it comes to any galvanized parts. Once heated, those fumes can be quite toxic. For whatever that is worth to folks.

Axes are super hard to make, I am working up to it too. You can do a simple design where you fold-over to make the eye, but a proper axe with a drifted eye is quite a challenge.

Just an FYI in all the forges I have built the rigidizer is added after its stuffed in place. I should add that other than that this is an amazing build. I will make the same suggestion to you that I do all beginners, make some tongs first!

I don't think that tank was off a filtration system. I pretty sure it is an expansion tank because I recently replaced mine. Its purpose is to deal with thermal expansion of water as it heats up in the water heater.

That is scary similar to the one I built a few years ago, although I did weld on a base and port for the burner, and I also have the bottom cast with refractory I "borrowed" from work along with the Unifrax blanket and the cylinder itself.... So that guy should get up to at least 1000C if it is anything like my build. That top piece of pipe defeats the purpose of the reducing fitting. It's intended to work as a venturi which will increase the airflow and give you better heat. Putting that piece in chokes it down and eliminates that effect
