EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER: Garden Edition | no-dig garden on a BUDGET! HOUSE TO HOMESTEAD Garden Tour
Last autumn we moved our family of five to our forever home and acreage and have spent the winter months fixing up and remodeling the inside. We love DIY projects and have been excited to head outside and fix things up on our property now that the sunshine has returned to the Pacific Northwest.
One of the biggest goals we have for this place is to become more self sufficient and so this year we are staring a kitchen garden using our own spin on the no-dig method. We’re always looking for simple, budget friendly ways to achieve our dreams and this garden does just that. By using the resources we already have and salvaging materials for this space, we are excited to begin our journey as first time gardeners.
So join us as we transform this corner of our property and take another step on the path of taking this place from house to homestead.
s and last few projects we have to complete this space and take the next step on the journey of taking this place from HOUSE TO HOMESTEAD!

The mint could easily take over the whole bed. They might be best for you in containers that the roots have less chance of getting out everywhere. Our last rental had one spot of mint when we moved in and 2 years later when we moved out it was throughout the entire bed.

We have a teeny weeny little garden bed! Our first ever! My husband said that it’s like our “goldfish before you get the dog” bc he wants to see we can keep this alive before we go bigger lol. I thought about getting a sign and naming it the goldfish garden just to mess with my neighbors heads 😂

Wonderful work Natalie! So great. Don't know if it's helpful but: 1. Consider putting the mint in a pot, it's very invasive and will take over the whole bed (genuinely it's growing through the foundations of my greenhouse!) 2. Herbs like poor soil, the compost/soil you put in may be too rich. Maybe mix in some sand & grit to make it more free draining and less nutrient rich? 3. Companion planting is really fun, maybe look into what goes well together eg. Tomatoes and basil, garlic and carrot. 4. Maybe think about wildlife - so bird feeder, compost heap, little pond/water moment? LOVE what you've done, really well done

When she said she added mint my heart dropped. I made the mistake of planting mint in with my strawberries. Huge mistake! The mint was impossible to get rid of. I spent hours trying to painstakingly remove every root. I covered the whole bed for months. That just killed the strawberries but the mint persisted. We eventually expanded our cement patio over the top and I halfway expected the dang mint to burst up through the concrete. 😆 Needless to say I learned my lesson. Never plant mint in a bed!

I came to the comments to mention mint. It'll take over everything unless it's in its own container or bed. It has horizontal runners kind of like spider plants that just spread and spread

Fun fact: not only are the blossoms of nasturtium edible, so are the leaves AND the seeds! I've heard they can be pickled. Nasturtium seeds are SUPER easy to harvest- they're like raspberries, if they fall off into your hand they are mature. No mess, no fuss! Don't be surprised if they take a while to flower, they like to shoot out tons of foliage before setting flowers. Happy gardening :)

I am so happy your garden came to fruition for your family.I had a huge garden in my younger years because we had 5 children to feed and I loved it.I read in a Mother Earth magazine to plant marigolds in your garden beds to help keep the bugs away. The marigolds have to be the ones that have the strongest smell to them,of course nothing works 100%.When I grew eggplants I had more bugs in the garden.I hope your garden flourishes and brings food to the table for your lovely family.

Lots of fun to see! Word of caution…don’t plant the mint in the ground. It will absolutely take over the whole bed and is a nightmare to get rid. Put it in pots. I’m sure in your climate, it will overwinter fairly easily in a pot.

Gravel is great! It's excellent for providing drainage so that your plants don't drown, I add it into all of the gardens I have regardless of what I'm planting, I also like pumice for drainage as well 🙂 Also for the mint, I know a lot of people have commented, I have mine planted in a terracotta pot in my garden so that water will still drain and absorb

Love your family! I suggest digging up your mint and putting it in a separate container. It is extremely invasive through under rooting. Also, Blue Star creeper is a great ground cover…not an edible but so pretty and more dense then thyme so it could give you some nice contrast/variety. Gardening always gave me such an intimate connection with God…He uses all those gardening concepts to speak to us in all aspects of our lives. Enjoy!

The moment about halfway through the video where most of you are gathered in the garden, the plants are coming in, and you and Weston kiss made me cry. It was just such a wholesome and joyous moment. Set up drip irrigation. It's really not very expensive and will save you so much time! Mulch over it with some composting mulch and you will not have weeds. Looks so good! And agreed with the mint! Put that in a pot by itself because it will not be able to be removed once it spreads.

Yay! Congratulations Natalie and fam 🌿 The old fencing would make fantastic tomato cages. Just roll in a circle and secure with zip-ties. You can also eat the nasturtium leaves as well 😄 Grow the dill from seed early in the season (consult the bag of seed for earliest date in your area). There are dill seeds for floral arrangements & edibles. I recommend adding flowers in each bed to aid with fruit and veggie pollination. Be mindful of keeping tomato above some other plants (just make sure it doesn't hang OVER the 🍓 container)- tomatoes can harbor many diseases. Love the idea of expanding ground cover thyme- add more pavers too! They count as ground cover too, and easy maintenance 😉

Hey! Your garden looks great! You'll learn so much from growing your own food. I would suggest planting your mint in its own container, it is a very opportunistic plant and will take over your herb bed. It produces many, many runners, that can be tiresome to control and even strangle out surrounding plants. Your basil is a companion plant for tomatoes and can be planted together when the time comes. Happy gardening😊

And this will be a very cost effective way to add to your soil , keep the weeds down, and save on having to water. Look into garden of eden gardening. All done by using wood chips. My garden LOVED it and all my plants produced wonderfully. And like lots of other said move the mint to a container it will take over worse than the weeds will. Happy gardening. ❤️

I love what you have done with your garden! I live in Southeast Texas, and have my first garden this year as well. My problem right now is crawfish mounds. After a big rain they did up mounds in and around our garden. If anyone has tips on how to get rid of crawfish, please let me know. Congrats Natalie & Weston on your new big baby! lol 😊😊

Oh my goodness, this turned out AMAZING! I was already excited to see how the raised beds were going to turn out, but y’all went above and beyond. Such an amazing job from both of you and all your family as well. I can’t wait to see more cooking videos now ;)
