You could enhance the light output of the LEDs with this addition: Place polished metal around the 3 (three) sides to reflect the light inward.

One possible way to improve this project quite a bit would be to add any kind of reflective material to all of the edges (or just the bottom and top edges). You could also use mirrors with the right size. This keeps more light inside the acrylic and improves the lighting of the numbers. You could also swap out the AAA battery for a much higher capacity AA 1.2 V rechargeable cell for longer on-time. Very nice video, I would like to hear from you what you think about my ideas and maybe see an upgrade video if you want! Keep up the good work. :)

Great video again, you have a perfect balance of talking about, and showing what you do. Some people talks to much or to less and some are trying too hard to make jokes but you keep it going at perfect pace and with positive attitude and are easy to understand. Also the sped up videoclips are just right. I'm rambling about your performance because I work partly with IT education and I am nerdly interested in presentation as much as the projects, Good on you mate!

Standard YX8018 and 220 uH inductor gives about 18mA of current no matter what (that will be also 18mA for all 6 diodes). Just do 2 (39mA) or 3 (60mA) of inductors (220 uH) in parallel and you will get more light, but the time of working will decrease 2 or 3 times then. You can also use 0,5 or 1W solar panel - 5,5V for one eneloop AAA and it will work fine (more current with lower voltage - about 80mA in full sun). I tested it. Thoose lights are working with 60mA of current for 10 hours (eneloop is 800mAh), so it will be ok for 13 hours.
@Electrologia
@Electrologia 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your comment. This is actually what I was searching for. Can YX8018 handle 5.5V solar panel?
@mati211p
@mati211p 2 жыл бұрын
@@Electrologia I am using YX8018 with 5,5V solar panel 60 mA, 750 mAh battery (1,2V) for about 5 years. Still working. I am thinking that maybe YX8018 is not able to take 5,5V in - ok can work day or 2 if battery contact fail, but battery resistance decrease the voltage during charge from 5,5V solar to Ni-MH battery current voltage (during charge changing) + diode decrese voltage (so about 1,8V during almost full charge). I noticed YX8018 is able to break - solar panel input pin failure resulting no light up LED. It took place in 2V solar panels and 5,5V solar panels. I am using QX5252F because of a lot lower number of failures, good work with 5,5 V solar panels ( up to 1W or 220 mA), but also with high current output - from 1 mA to 250 mA (average). More eficcient is using 2,4-2,7V solar panels because in same area you can get higher current. Also MPP is closer to working point. But 5,5V solar panels can do great work during cloudy days too.
@Electrologia
@Electrologia 2 жыл бұрын
@@mati211p Thank you very much for explanation. May I ask for the second solution for my problem? I have some LEDs in series connection. and I do not know which Amp should be okay for them. If 1 LED needs 20mA then how should I calculate for 2 or more LEDs?
@mati211p
@mati211p 2 жыл бұрын
@@Electrologia Depending on connection. In series connection current is same for all LEDs and flow trough all LEDS, only voltage increases. In solar lights (1,2V or 3,6-3,7V applications) LEDs are in parallel connection, so double/tripple current but same voltage. In parallel connection you increasing current, in series - not because it will result damaging LEDs. If you connect in parallel connection two or more LEDs with different characteristic, you can also get damage of LEDs. Solar ICs like YX8018 will not work if you connect 2 LEDs in series as output.

Hello, Nice video, but please tell me if I want to put a SMD LED (for stronger light) instead of the simple LED you have used, what changes should I make to the circuit. I mean will the QX5252 chip work with one (or several in paralel) 5730 SMD led powered by a 3.7v 4000mAh 18650 Li-Ion battery? (with more solar cells to recharge) I am waiting for your answer. Thanks

Andddd, nobody said though, LEDs are NOT devices to be connected in parallel. They MUST be current controlled, hence they need to be connected in series setup. If you connect several leds in parallel, the one with lower forward voltage will get most of the current, that leads to overheat that leads to lower drop voltage that leads to more current... towards destruction, led by led...
@The0507221
@The0507221 5 жыл бұрын
LEDs may be controlled by a constant voltage source or a constant current source. As for series connected, you must know that if you lose one, you lose them all.

1.2v per LED, and there are 6 of them so he really was using 7.2v. In reality white LED's need about 3 volts to achieve optimal brightness. a 5v led strip would have been more effective in this situation, along with a standalone solar panel and 4 rechargeable AA batteries.
@gnuthad
@gnuthad 6 жыл бұрын
Zac, If you actually watched the video, the panels and the LEDs were both connected in parallel. This increases the current (source/draw) without changing the voltage. The YX8018 chip in the controller is a voltage boost chip so that it produces roughly 3V from the battery 1.25V.

Umm wtf? 6 cells, 6 leds, one board and one battery? Its not the energy production, but the energy storage that sucks in those lamps.. i replaced 600mAh battery with proper quality 800mAh and that alone did big difference on the burn time. In this build you can charge roughly hundred time over that one batterys capacity, even in bad day. Put 6 batteries on one cell and you would charge that fully in good day, as it wont use all energy until sun comes up..

This is a great video. However, I know of some corrupted contractors & their equally corrupted raised kids and their buddies, that have homes they live in that doesn't have a house number on it. Someone, doesn't want anyone to trace their corrupted tails back to their home, You Think? I wonder if the mailman even delivers mail to them? Moral of the story, some criminals remove their house address numbers from their house for a reason. Especially, not putting a glowing bright LED one on the home.
