Have you tried the Ryobi ONE trim router. I have an old one and it comes in handy on a variety of jobs when I do not need the power of a large router. It would have made cutting that groove a breeze.

Something important about the lighting you did: You should really connect the metal to the ground. Or did you do the house without bootleg grounding? If you don't connect it, it is possible (e.g. isolation failure) that you've 120 volt on the metal. If the metal is connected to the ground thats not possible.
