I built two of these last Fall. They've worked great so far . I have them hanging from a steel cable that I have connected from a tree to my fence ( to keep the critters from getting into them.) I made some adjustments to the hole sizes to accommodate my seed. Thanks so much for sharing your idea.

Great idea steve and very robust. I am going to modify it slightly. I am going to cut a hole in the bottom of a round hanging basket. Turn it upside down and slide it over the pipe onto the tray. The smaller birs will be able to get at the seed but it will keep the large birds, crows and birds of prey from picking them off lol

I tell you what I think my friend! Great Idea! Thanks for sharing it! I just started feeding the birds around my backyard early this summer and I have been amazed at what I didn't know was here! It all began, when two little birds fell out of a nest that we couldn't reach to put them back into! I was able to raise them both and return them to the "wilds" of the back yard and from there, it bloomed into a "Hobby"! :)

STEVE ROB REVIEWS Funny but frustrating outcome from my purchase at Home Depot online. The 4” caps did not fit over the 4” pipe because they have the same OUTSIDE diameter. HUH?? 4 inch caps the exact same colour fit over the pipe snug . The same 4 inch caps at Canadian Tire up here are less so maybe try another store. I've never seen this before :) the ends of the pvc pipe are male and female so maybe you tried the wrong end so try both ends of the pipe .

Really cool bird feeder. Your wife was right the squirrels would figure out that that rod comes out and down goes your bird feeder. I don't know about the squirrels in Canada maybe they're too polite to break into a bird feeder. In Florida my experience is when I got a squirrel proof bird feeder they figured out if they chew hole below the seed port they could and did empty my bird feeder within an hour. I'm looking at it through my back window thinking it's just fine the seeds are just disappearing at a rapid rate. when I found the hole. I threw the feeder away and squirrels started throwing pinecone cores down on me when I walked out of my house.

Squirrels. There is no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder. Some folks may want to try adding an inside down plastic garbage can lid to the top. Place a plastic Wiffle ball underneath it so the lid will easily tip and the squirrel will fall off. Then add an upside down plastic bowl about 4" above the feeding tray so the squirrel will have a hard time grabbing the feeding tray as he falls off the garbage can lid. this modification is not much for the asthetics of the feeder, but it has enabled me to hang it from a tree with better results in the never ending battle with the squirrels!

@@SteveRobReviews For the life of me I could not find that dam pizza pan with the holes in it. I looked in 6 stores yesterday and not one had it. So for now i am going to use a 5 gallon bucket lid with some small holes until I can find it. We don't get much rain here in Phoenix Arizona so shouldn't be much of a problem for the time being. I had to use black abs and for the top I used a threaded slip on and then a threaded cap with the hanger in the middle. That way I can just un-thread the feeder to fill it. The kids are bird watchers now!

How's she goin'? The feeder is a great project!!! Easy to hang, robust and a great idea for keeping the moisture off the bird seed!!! The squirrels will be all over this and to me that means it's a good bird feeder!!!! LOL Take care!!!

Cheap and easy, that's how I like a lot of things! The birds here go through a ton of black sunflower seeds in our bird feeder. Gromit gets pretty agitated when he watches them out the window. He's a vicious bird killing machine if he gets the chance. I was walking out of the garage a couple summers ago and came out just in time to watch him come tearing out of the bush he hides in, run half way across the yard, leap about five feet into the air and snag a bird that dared to do a low altitude fly by of my yard. I managed to grab him before he finished the bird off. I put the bird in a box in the dark with some water for about an hour, then released him out front. He was totally unresponsive when I got him away from Gromit. Like he was playing dead or something.

Nice job Steve, looks nice and neat and will hold a lot of seed. I built a really nice bird feeder for my wife for Christmas complete with cedar shingles and birch bark siding. I went all out. For some strange reason, we have only had 6 birds come to it this year. So strange, other years lots of birds. Are you getting birds at your home feeder? Curious to see if it's a local thing. Thanks

Bud I don't get a week before I have to fill it . Tons of birds every day. Birds won't come to a feeder with any red on it or if it looks like they cant see around once they land to feed. Might be the spot you have it , try a different spot maybe.

Birdfeeder was awesome but you should have it free standing out in the middle of your lawn on a shepherds pole. ….where you have it positioned ,squirrels are just gonna climb right on and I have a free feed, lol

Did I miss where you explained why not to fix the plate to the bottom cap before cementing? Nice and simple either way, I've got. Bunch of PVC left over from a plumbing Reno, planning to make a bunch and give to the neighbors

Well its nice to be able to clean it out over time as the seed will be affected by the moisture unless your in the desert. I like to wash it out once in a while so no mould builds up. You can fasten it solid if you like but just put some caulking around the base to seal it tight so no seeds get uner the base.

Awesome build ! I love my large backyard with its myriads of birds from a pair of nesting balds that seem to both float and command the air as well as the hooters conversation between themselves the cardinals blue jays robins wood peckers golden finches sea gulls migrating honkers and quite a dazzling array of hummers How much would you charge to build one of these pvc feeders for me?
