Welcome to The Essentials Club tutorial channel which is all about sharing the steps to become more resourceful and creative with crafting your own minimal, conscious wardrobe.
This tutorial guides you through the process of how to self draft your own ultimate summer slip dress from scratch and tailored to your body! It’s a mini style with a split feature on the front leg section and tie straps.

STEP 01: Measure & cut fabric - 01.01
STEP 02: Find angles for under arm area - 06.56
STEP 03: Cut out front panel with seam for leg split - 10.49
STEP 04: Cut out straps - 14.16
STEP 05: Sew straps - 15.54
STEP 06: Join the split section on front panel - 18.43
STEP 07: Cut interfacing for front and back - 20:55
STEP 08: Attach straps in between interfacing - 23:14
STEP 09: Try on and sew side seams - 26:13
STEP 10: Clean up bottom hem and any remaining frayed edges - 31.53

FABRIC AMOUNT:
Sizes (AU)6-10 need approx. 1.5-1.8 metres off the roll / Sizes (AU)12-16 need approx. 2-2.3 metres off the roll (or measure your full hip circumference and times that by 1.5)

I really like how you thoroughly explain how you came to your cutting measurements. I have the hardest time following a tutorial when people explain it too quickly. I think the only thing that would take your projects over the top would be to iron your straps flat after you finish! Awesome tutorial!! :)

So glad you find it easy to follow :) I tend to skip ironing during these tutorials to streamline it and just let people know to do it but agree that it would help take it to the next level because looking back it makes it look a bit scrappy with all the wrinkles. Keep your eyes peeled for the next ones with nice ironed fabric ;) x x

It truly made my day :) And second I so get what you mean about struggling to move away from fast fashion options if you don't know how to make it yourself or source it consciously. Making my own clothes has helped me completely move away from buying from these types of labels and I feel so good now knowing all the love that goes into my essentials! Yay! Can't wait to see how it turns out :) You can definitely skip the slits if that's not your thing. Essentially just repeat the backside for the front and you'll have a nice simple slip dress!

I find fabric so difficult to cut straight when it's wrinkled. Actually can't see straight with wrinkles , so it's amazing this works for other people. It would be a complete disaster for me and people would assume I did it while wearing a blindfold.

Could the splits instead be done by having two of the same piece for front and back and then just not sewing down the seams between the two all the way? I got confused when cutting so now I have two identical front/back pieces and an extra side panel. I was going to just cut the side off the front piece but then I thought I might mess up the seam allowance if I did.

How is the slit done ? Do you cut with an angle where the slit is done and then hem or do you just hem with an angle

Hi, so in your blog post you don't have the straps that tie. I now have my front and back interfaced but I can't figure out how to attach the straps to my back piece with the interfacing 😂 is there a video that corresponds with the straps in the blog post?

Hey! There's not currently a video that reflects the blogpost steps exactly. In the blogpost version I actually didn't use interfacing and just attached directly. It's a bit hard to know what advice to give without seeing the garment. But if you've got the interfacing ready for yours you essentially follow the same first steps in this video then for the second side you repeat the process but you'll have the straps attached to the otherside as well. Sorry that's probably no help! I've got it on my list to create another slip dress tutorial so I'll make sure to do it without the tie straps so you can see if you haven't figured it out by then! x x

Hey! How much did the materials cost you? I'm currently contemplating wether sewing my own clothes ist financially efficient for me. The dress is stunning!

It totally depends what material you use. But I've seen some nice linens available for AUD$10 per metre and you only need around 1.5m max to make this dress so that's AUD$15 all up. I feel like to buy a dress like this would cost a lot more than that. Plus there might even be left over material to make a small cami style top which means you get 2 garments out of it! Hope that helps :)

If our bust is our widest part, would we measure (when we’re trying in the dress) where we want it to sit around our bust and then just see straight down? Instead of an A frame? Does that make sense lol

It does make sense! And yes that would be ideal if your bust is your widest point to just go straight down from there. Then it'll be a nice shift style dress :)

I've had my sewing machine for over 10 years so is an old model - but is a Janome. Such a reliable brand and they have many price range options depending on what you need. Second hand machines are always a good idea too! x x
