Great video Glen! Please consider doing a quick follow-up, to show us how the finishing touches you mentioned go (better self-closing hardware; a stronger handle; painting, etc.). Also, do you intend to finish the interior? The exposed screws from the handle maybe use some attention. Always a delight to see your projects come to life!

Maybe some gas struts to hold the lid open? They come in heaps of different sizes and pressures. Looks fantastic already, can't wait to see it completed. LED strip lighting underneath the very bottom where the castors are would be pretty cool

I really like the way that you work through the process of your builds. You often brought a smile to my face with your logic, because it is all too familiar. An example is when referring to the hinge placement. I have found myself growing tired of “over-thinking it”. Sometimes I must make a decision in my own mind to just pick a way to do it so that the project can move forward to completion. Otherwise I waste a lot of time and/or the project comes to a halt. Your reasoning is very helpful.

I LOVED this! Excellent Idea; I was stating as you built this that I would have painted the carcass a different color, so when the boards were put on, I would paint/stain the boards a different color. In my humble opinion, it would make that piece pop. Then, as you so explained, it was outdoor wood and needed to dry. Wow I ate my words then! Great idea, that's why I love to watch your videos. Until next project, my friend, Stay Safe and Stay Blessed.

@samuelminer9568

First off... well built and strong. Suggestion: when you placed the last section of outside decking near the top of the box, instead leav that off and build the lid with a lip on the outside to meet evenly spaced as the other decking. On the top the lip use a solid material that would keep any moisture from settling into the lid. If you overhang the lid by maybe 6 inches to a foot you could also use the storage box as a table as well

Took the words right out of my mouth. It's sturdy and durable, the inset handle was all sorts of clever, but that lid looks like crap. Kept hoping the next step involved putting a border around it or something to hide that glaring white plastic, but no.

@Jared I don't you understand how hard the entire process is. To think of the idea, design many versions of if, keep water out, build it, flim it, edit it, voiceover. You see the end result and instantly see things that could be better. I personally don't think this looks like crap. It's a deck box no fine woodworking. At some point I have to call a project done, but with this one I have to revisit it when the lumber dry and address it again. When this I all painted it will be fine.

@@DIYCreators I have my own workshop, and my own fair share of projects that didn't turn out quite like I'd hoped they would, I know exactly what it's like. But as you say, it's definitely modular and something that can be returned to, and I'd love to see the finished product. Incidentally, I loved your squat rack video so much, I used bits of it in rebuilding mine, which turned out _much_ better than my first attempt.

I built something similar but not as good. My neighbor came over and was laughing at how many screws I put in (and I think you put in more!). I told him what I had built was an emergency storage unit for extra screws 😃. That lid looks heavy. I would use gas shock struts on it. Also on mine I angled the lid for rain runoff. You are much more precise than me, marking where the screws should actually go, I just threw them in, in a way where they were offset in terms of the grain of the wood.

Lovely work. Well explained. Two thoughts: use gas struts, you select them by weight they have to work and min/max length. Also consider rope handles from heavy hessian rope, like sailors of old had on their trunks. They look great and could lift the box.
