Just want to add for anyone starting a younger picea like this: get rid of bar branches early, reduce the whorls to one or two branches, and keep those big lower branches under control to avoid inverse taper. It happens easily and is impossible to fix, and most picea sold in stores already have it. When these trees have proper taper they are great bonsai.

I'm so excited! My Christmas order arrived this morning a little over 24 hours after we placed it. ( Two yews, a larch, one of these picea sets, a paperbark maple & a couple of gifts ) absolutely amazing! Thank you so much Peter & everyone over at herons. I can't wait to relax with your videos while I work on the trees, it's going to be like my own mini 1 to 1 class. Hopefully next year I'll be able to visit the nursery in person. (A goal that has kept me positive through all these lockdowns) Hope all of you at herons have a wonderful festive season & again thank you so much. 🙂🌲☃️🌲

Very nice indeed. And how about that: I just made three of them last week (2x small, 1 x medium)! Personally, I do prefer the formal upright because it suggests a large, massive tree almost immediately, as spruces tend to grow in nature (in general). In my experience, you can wire also the (very) small branches, mainly to get that "massive tree" looks. For that specific purpose, I use a rather "loose" way of wiring, like a coil, or a tube or a "wide" corkscrew and very thin wire. Because of the needles, you can still get these little branches in a right direction by doing so and you will still not stress the branches. But on the other hand, it takes quite some patience, that's for sure. Just my thoughts... I couldn't agree more with your words about the size of the pot. The right size pot (smaller) is, so to speak, the "final" step in the development of the bonsaï tree. Given the space to grow and develop before, helps the tree very much and also gives much more protection against frost and drying out. I my little greenhouse, I'm still keeping the remains and cuttings in a bucket... because of the very nice fragrance indeed...Thanks again, mr Chan. But how about you, showing up on BBC? What if Steven Spielberg discovers you and makes you a star? Are we then loosing you as our bonsaï friend, teacher and inspiration...? Would be so regrettable...

Good Afternoon, I am hoping to find out what might be the best type of tree/plant to use to mimic the look of the beautiful large Eastern White Pines we see along the highways in Northern Ontario Canada. The towering beautifully irregular shaped trees. Assume it would be more of a formal upright with some irregularity in the branch structure. (Not in the form of a “” pyramid) Thanks. Love these videos, thank you Peter Chan.

I did major pruning and wiring on one of these trees a couple years ago in November around the first frost of the year, 50%+ removed, and the tree did fine. I saved major root work for the next year just in case. No dieback or any lost branches, and the tree is still going strong. Zone 7 FWIW.

The problem is, the United States have import rules that are so strict, it makes it impossible for any trader outside the US to sell there; especially for anything that grows. So, I believe this is not Herons' fault, but the US customs department. Good luck!

Dwarf Alberta spruce. Is this Picea Glauca 'Conica'? I read on bonsaiempire.com that: "Picea glauca 'Conica' however is often tried but rarely makes good bonsai." Can you comment on that?
@MAMLeers
@MAMLeers 3 жыл бұрын
RobbasGardening I know what bonsaiempire writes and what several other sites/people say about this species, regarding to bonsaï. Here, I do not want to discuss those opinions but what I can do, is tell you about my own experiences with, indeed, Picea Glauca Conica. 1) This species is more tolerant towards cutting back on the rootball; 2) When fertilized, the trunk thickens rather easily, even in a relative small (bonsaï)pot; 3) It tends to make far more than enough (new) buds on the branches (and sometimes even on the trunk). When you cut the tops of the branches (late autumn, before severe frost), it even buds back more on the branches; 4) Because of the needles, a rather "loose" wiring (coil- or tube-like) is sufficient to lead the branches in the chosen direction; 5) The species is very tolerant towards harsh climate conditions, even in a (bonsaï) pot which, by the way, should never dry out completely. When freezing conditions continue during several nights and days without a break, I would certainly advice some protection but in fact, that goes for about all bonsaï. 6) Given enough drainage, the species is not fuzzy about the soil mixture: 7) This spruce (as in fact all of them) very much likes lots of sunlight and does not like heavy pruning during full growing season; 8) They are relatively (very) cheap and very accessible; 9) They do make lovely bonsaï, in fact without problems, when more or less general rules of care taking above, are respected. Based on my own experiences during quite some years (!), I can even recommend the species for starter enthusiasts. Summary: good drainage, lots of sunlight, enough fertilizer during growing season, repotting early spring, no drying out at all, no (heavy) pruning during growing season, try rather loose wiring on the branches. I hope this helps, good luck!

They are called the 'gatekeepers'of bonsai. You find them in every walk of life. I have been told on good authority that they are the old traditionalists who are very envious of what I do and they cant believe that I have such a huge following. My motto is not to be bothered by that - I just do what I feel is good for others.
