This is probably one of the best videos I have come across on KZfaq. This kid films a D.I.Y. video like A BOSS. I have seen guys attempt D,I,Y. vids who are twice his age and with half the intelligence. I could almost swear that a toddler was holding the camera in each one, to boot. I wish that every question I have like this could be answered by this cat. I am an old dog still learnin' new tricks.

You could bend the index cards down and tape to tire after you place them between the tire and rim. That way you can still get in to all the hard to get places (like the spokes).

Very nice job with the demonstrations on several ways of doing it.I am going to do my Rims when the weather warms up and i think i will go with the full tape job. I think laying them flat as you did ensures a more even coat more so than standing them up. So thanks for the time and effort you put into this it really was helpful.

I really liked your video. It was in depth and informative. One other thing I saw was armor - alling the tire (but make sure none is on the wheel, clean it with lacquer thinnner)..Then the plastidip is really easy to remove.
@RichardBronosky8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for doing this differential comparison. Of all the methods I think I prefer the partial mask. It allows you to get nice and tight with the rim and it still easy to remove. I'm going to spend $5 and buy a Lazy Susan bearing from Home Depot and use some 2x4 scrap to make a work surface. I think these elements will allow me to get the best results on the rims of my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Glad I did my research.

Agree with others, it's a well structured video. I just dipped a set of Audi 9 spoke wheels. I spent a lot of time preparing the rims, I even used a plasti dip de-greaser but these wheels have very tiny recesses and the dip didn't take in these areas. I then paid special attention to these areas on the other 3 wheels and they came out fine. I would say to all, make sure you have totally de-greased the rims of old polish and other stuff, it makes a big difference. I also finished off the rims with a sealer. I am now interested to learn how they survive in the real world of dirt, cleaning and daily grind. I opted for the part taping method which worked fine. I also re-inserted the studs (poked them loosely in their holes) while spraying the wheels to ensure the dip didn't have a detrimental effect when tightening the wheels. Well done young man..

Great video. Nice to see all the different ways. One thing I do before I clean the wheel is clean and armor-all the tire. This makes the tire give up the dip much more easily. Especially on a tire that is a few years old. They are more dry and tend to hang on to the dip much harder. Having done it with bare tire, and with the cards, I will always go to the cards. So much easier.

What I do when I dip my wheels with it still being on the car is just use a lot of tire shine. Makes it greasy and the dip comes off very easily. I've used the methods before too, easier when it's not on the car. Good video
@SickDips9 жыл бұрын
Tire shine really does help at keeping the dip off the tire but be careful not to touch the rim. Because of the greasy texture, if you get it on the wheel the dip won't stick. Thanks :)
@williamallan2149 жыл бұрын
I don't ever comment on videos but seriously kid this is probably one of the best videos on dipping wheels I've seen. I've dipped things before and was looking to do my Mazda 3 wheels this week and some of the tips you gave in here I didn't even know about. I know you said that how many coats you put on depends on preference but is their a number of coats you'd recommend for protecting the wheel, I don't want to do this and a month down the road have to peel and redo cause rocks and other things from the road are exposing the silver paint again.
@SickDips9 жыл бұрын
William Allan I appreciate the kind words :) As for the number of coats, as soon as you can get full coverage and you can't see your silver wheels anymore, I like to go 2 more coats so it is not only durable, but also easily peelable down the road. Let me know if you have any other questions!! Cheers

Nice video...but never wait till the dip is dry to remove the tape. Like you say in the video if you remove it when its dry you run the risk of pulling up some of the dip from the rims. Always pull off the tape when your done your last coat before it dries.
@SickDips9 жыл бұрын
If you leave the dip to dry before you take off the dip, you 'should' not have any problems taking the dip off the tire as there is enough of a separation between the tire and the rim to safely remove the excess.
@Shadownian9 жыл бұрын
Sick Dips yes in this example it works because you have that bit of separation...but not everyone who watches this will know thats the reason why you decided to wait till it was dry to remove the tape. If you wait till it dries to do any other sort of masking...say where your doing lines on the body....waiting till it dries would be a severe no no...lol. So all im saying as a teaching video....you should either remove the tape when wet and say why....or explain that when using plasti-dip on almost any other project that waiting is the wrong thing to do...etc. If somebody who was trying PD for the first time saw this vid and went to do their first project...that wasnt tires...they would have a serious issue...lol
@SickDips9 жыл бұрын
Shadownian Notice the title of the video is PlastiDipping WHEELS 4 different ways. Key word it wheels. There are countless things you can dip and in this video I am outline how you can dip your wheels. I have a video coming out soon outlining how you can dip your car.
@Shadownian9 жыл бұрын
Sick Dips not trying to start anything or something like that...i just have seen alot of different PD videos and just dont think i have ever heard anyone say to remove tape after its dried. I know its nitpicking...but its just such a common thing to do...removing tape while still wet regardless of the project that seeing you wait till it was dry just threw me off...lol

I used to use a product called "spray-mask" that was very similar... Plasti-Dip is great because you can get it in a spray can and use it much the same way. For custom paint applications, try prepping the surface for paint, plasi-dip in any color, then draw and carefully cut away (exacto knife) the area you want to spray.. Think stencils, you can create your own, sky is the limit with this stuff and an airbrush.
@professor24218 жыл бұрын

Your Demo on this video is The best I've ever seen. GOOD JOB men..... I have one question. After you finished dipping the wheels. Shouldn't you have to go to Tires shop to re-balance the wheels? Please let me know.
@SickDips9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Woon I'm happy you liked it :) As for balancing, as long as you put a nice even coat over the entire wheel, you shouldn't have to get it rebalanced. Technically it does change the balance of the wheel but because the weight of the plastidip is so minimal, you won't be able to notice any change in balance when you put your wheels back on. Good question!!

for the last wheel with no tape and a thin strip, you don't have to try and peel it, just get a clean microfiber cloth and rub the dip off the tire, it will just crumble right off. adding dip release or armor all/tire shine is still the best way if you're not going to mask, but yeah clean microfiber and barely any elbow grease and it will just fall off the tires.

Another tip. Put tyre shine on your tyre before you paint to get the overspray off. Use an abrasive sponge to wipe off the tyre shine and afterspray and you are done
