can that 8" pipe be reduced in size to 6"? is it critical that it is so long? thanks

I would think 6" would be sufficient but I haven't tested it and it may not give the air and propane sufficient time to mix. Let us know how it works for you.

The regular white thread tape isn’t rated for propane. The gas will deteriorate the tape over time and potentially leak. Good news is that the yellow tape isn’t much more expensive and will add an extra measure of safety. It’s also available at Home Depot/Lowe’s.

When it's up and running the heat that migrates down the pipe might exceed the melting point of your solder. I've seen people drill and tap the collar so they can drive in a pointed set screw to bind the copper pipe in place. Good luck and have fun. The nice thing about using the mig tip is your ability to try .23, .30 and .35 to get the best flame. You may want to add a way to control air intake to balance your flame.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 3 жыл бұрын
I've run this burner frequently for hours at a time and haven't had an issue with heat migration. The airflow seems to keep the intake end cool enough. Agreed about the MIG tips. I've found that smaller works better on this burner. I added an air controller on my MK2 version, check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNChdJeHtrPUmYE.html

That could work. If you watch the MK2 version video you will see that I changed the outlet size. It helps it hold a more stable flame. The main part is you want a big inlet and outlet with a narrow body. It creates a Venturi effect.

@MakeStuffNation

I was using a cheap bit of lead free flux core solder I had lying around. Sorry I don't remember the specifics and I'm out of town for work so don't have access to it right now. I also had a bit of trouble getting it to stick but it would flow into the gaps so I just gobbed up enough of it to keep the part from spinning.
@monstermash7487
@monstermash7487 5 жыл бұрын
Before you solder you should clean the pieces with an acid or vinegar. most solder is flux core or has flux wrapped around it. And if you're using an iron clean it with Sal-ammoniac first. It should stick.

hey ive been watching a few of your forge videos and im about to attempt my first forge...looking to build one out of a 20# propane tank, with 2 of your burners...couple questions can i replace the 1x3" tube with a longer one or will it mess with the air/fuel ratio? thinking of mounting those straight to the tank and then i can screw/ unscrew the reaminder of the burner housing Also if i made 2 of these burners, connected the brass fittings with a T then the ball vavle to run both off one tank will it still work? Lastly any idea how much heat these are through out? trying to figure out how much insulation i will need in my forge with 2 burners Thanks and i appreciate the videos by far the best video out there ive found!
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 2 жыл бұрын
The length of tube that you use for the body shouldn't make a big difference. I would check out my MK2 version video for a slightly better design that includes adjustable airflow. Using a T fitting in your hoses to fire two burners shouldn't be a problem.

@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 7 жыл бұрын
You can use different diameters. The important part is the flares so you get a good venturi effect. I'm not sure how it relates to efficiency but generally the larger diameter burners will put out more BTUs.

Hey, I’ve been building something very similar to your burner for my first forge. We got everything put together last night and are not getting a clean jet like flame. It’s really long with a lot of orange at the end. I was wondering if you had any tips or pointers or things we can take a look at.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 6 жыл бұрын
If its orange its not getting enough oxygen/mixture is too rich. It can be caused by a few things, not enough airflow (low pressure on the propane), too large an exit hole for the gas into the vinturi (slows down the flow and feeds too much gas), or the gas jet/hole not aligned properly with the body of the burner (doesn't draw in enough air). I hope this helps.

@seanporter7401

Well, we finally figured out our problem, and it wasn’t the mig tip size but rather the fact that the mig tip isn’t creating a seal in the threaded pipe. Looks like between the thin wall of the pipe and the curved nature of it that we were always getting a good deal of leakage around the base of the mig tip.

Would I be able to use a galvanized 1-1/2"x3/4" reducer safely? (the end that the brass fitting goes through) My local hardware store doesn't have that size in black pipe, but has all the other stuff

Adam Jackson No! Galvanized metal gives off dangerous/deadly fumes when exposed to heat like that.

I am trying to start backyard forgeing but am running into a problem. I am using a graphite crucible and even letting it heat up for 10min no melting is happening even after 15min. What ami I doing wrong?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 3 жыл бұрын
A crucible is used for melting metal, not heating metal to blacksmith/forge. Either way, a crucible alone is not enough, you have to put it in an insulated furnace, forge, or kiln to heat it.

you can also use another section of pipe screwed into the reducer to hold the copper pipe in place, for those people that can't solder.

The 1 inch pipe on the end does not work well. The 3/4 -1 reducer without the pipe works way better this was with a 10lb regulator.

Can you use an 6" instead of an 8" pipe? Why or why not??? Thank you
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 5 жыл бұрын
I think you should be able to use a 6" pipe. The possible downside is that the air and fuel might not mix as thoroughly and the valve end of the burner will be closer to the forge and will get hotter.

A few copper crush washers under the reducer bushing would allow you to tighten and clamp the tube so it wouldn't rotate, instead of soldering, drilling etc.

If I can't find 1/8" brass pipe can I go for something bigger like a 1/2" does it make a difference?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 6 жыл бұрын
The important part is the size of the hole that the propane comes out of. It might be possible for 1/2" to work if that's the outside diameter.

Can you simply use the pipe and put the end in the foundry instead of the reducer(s) at the end?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 6 жыл бұрын
You can easily omit the 1" pipe after the reducer on the burner end. The reducer acts as a flare to help keep the flame front at the end of the burner but you may be able to omit it too if you have it installed in a foundry as you mentioned. I haven't tried it.

How big does the burner hole have to be? I made it slightly larger than the burner diameter and my burner goes out fairly quickly when I add the lid. I am assuming that my burner hole is too small. Any guidelines? 1.25x, 1.5x, other, burner diameter?

Burner hole in my tank. Burner works great outside.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 3 жыл бұрын
the end of the burner should fit snugly in the hole (you don't want air drawn in around it) but if you can flare the hole through the wall out to a larger diameter (2x) on the inside of the forge it helps slow the airflow and stabilize the flame.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 3 жыл бұрын
Also, if you're not too far along with your project, you might want to check out my MK2 burner build video. You can reuse almost all the parts but it has some significant improvements such as adjustable airflow and a better/larger diameter nozzle (will help stabilize the flame)

I built mine using a 0.035 Tip, soldered all the joints, and it runs good for about 10 min then there is a loud BARK sound and flame moves from end of torch to a few inches from Mig Tip inside the pipe. I have increased the air intake area but still have the very same problem. Anyone have any issues similar to this and how to fix it ?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 6 жыл бұрын
I think you might need to run your gas regulator at higher pressure as it sounds like there isn't enough velocity to keep the flame at the exit of the burner.
