In this video I am demonstrating a few options of how to make a non-bird alternative feather out of sinamay and organza. I’m also looking at how the concept of “uncanny valley” can apply to millinery trims.

- Kitchen scissors
- Tweezers
- Millinery Wire 0.4mm & between 0.5-0.9mm
- Wire cutters/pliers
- Silk Paint for colouring the wire (or sharpies/alcohol markers)
- Baking Paper
- Iron
- Needle & Thread
- Bond-A-Web

favourite2023 This is very useful, because I am just starting to get into millinery, and making some out of other fabric sources is useful, especially since feathers overtime can get mites.

this is brilliant! i'm working on a costume that needs like a million feathers and i didn't wanna use actually feathers because i'm worried about how long they'll last over time and these are fantastic alternatives that i can't wait to try out

Thank you Ilona. It was interesting and helpfull. How strong this Bond-A-Web hold materials? I think it won't stand wet cleaning.

Hi Marina, I think it depends on the bond-a-web that you buy, as brands can be different. My advice would be to make a sample and test that for wet cleaning. Generally when you make trims and things for millinery purposes, non of them tend to be water proof.

Excellent! much better than poor birds losing theirs for hats. I suppose its ok if you find feathers whilst out for walks but apart from that, I would much rather fake it. Thanks Ilona. I'm from Scotland and we dont tend to pronounce the L in your name, I know its YOUR name so pronounce it however you want, I like it your way and whichever way its said, its a lovely name. I am really enjoying your content too and have become quite hooked to hats and hat making. Once I finish one I will tag you and Sarah at SH.
