That tailgate looks great! I also like the reuse of burned motor oil. Been doing that for decades. Even the state used to put it on the roads until the tree huggers complained. We used it on the shop dirt floor and after a few layers it was hard as a rock. Put it on hay wagons, manure spreaders, etc. to help lub and prevent corrosion. Good rust prevention on the under carraige as well.

speaking of rust.. next step is pulling off the bed to address some frame and gas tank rust.. probally end up pulling out my little welder..

You were not lying about there being no videos on how to build a tailgate. Yours is the first and honestly I never thought about attaching bed frame as a support for the frame. Im gonna hinge mine so I can use it as a work surface. Thankyou My Brother.

No problem! The bed frame is what I had on hand, and over time became an "inside joke" on this truck project with the rough old roots. As we used it for everything. This tailgate, repairing the frame, securing the wooden bed etc.

Most bed frames are hardened steel. That’s why it takes a few extra grunts to drill through it

I wish the guy on KZfaq last week build a tailgate out of a beautiful piece of cedar install the hardware including the handle and latches and it opened and operated exactly like a regular tailgate

The best place to get cheap cedar is actually at Lowe's. Go to the garden center and look at the fence slats. I've got a couple hundred that I picked up in cull packs.. but I worked there for quite a while, regardless couple bucks each isn't bad for some decent cedar

That tailgate makes the truck look significantly better; surprisingly so. Maybe because it makes the truck look more than well used. It also looks well loved. I’m here from Green Acre Homestead. You remind me of so many guys I grew up with in Missouri, but you are probably harder working than most of them.

Very nice job - I like it a lot! It almost, kind of, sorta, looks - just a little bit, mind - like a flag that is famously displayed on the roof of a certain orange Dodge Charger of a 1969 vintage... If ever the box rusts out, you will have to build yourself a wooden flat deck with drop down side gates to match that tailgate. I know I'm getting carried away here, but, you could take the rest of your buddy's bed frame (he's just going to have to get used to sleeping at floor level) and make yourself a headache rack for behind the cab in such a way that your new tailgate will drop down into it for storage (and back window protection...) for when you find yourself hauling home a roadside find that needs to poke out of the back some distance. I know, that's crazy talk - I'll go put myself to bed now.

That truck has two components that will outlive all of us: first... that heat-treated, oil-tempered wooden tailgate will still bead water in 200 years. Second: I assume that motor is a 300-c.i. inline six? Best goddamn medium-duty truck engine EVER. I plan to drive mine into the ground. It's a 1993 with over 200K miles and it will literally pull a house. Whatcha got on that beast??

You got that right! It had about as many miles as yours did, 4 speed transmission with Granny gear it was a heck of a truck! Even if it looked nothing like it did after I got done with it haha Finally sold it to a man to fund this new truck we just got... Didn't take him long to break the transmission in it by trying to pull stumps... guess they aren't invincible! Haha but still awesome! Just keep an eye on the frame. Had to weld this one..

Awesome tailgate! Too good for a ford or chevy. Need an old IH truck for that tailgate! And if you wanted a tailgate that will last forever and be passed on from one truck to the next, then hedge (osage orange) is the wood for you! Or black locust. But heck, hedge fence posts last a good 200 years or more.

have plans to make a wooden bed one day, break out my little saw mill and use local hardwood. For now this one is in decent enough shape to get along with.

@@SteepintheWoods: Do you have any hedge in your area? Or black locust? With either one it is a good idea to cut fresh and then set out to dry. Especially the hedge. Do NOT want to cut hedge fully dried out unless you are into sacrificing blades!

I had to pause the video to go find the “my kids a carpenter and I bought my wooden tailgate supplies at hobby lobby” video! 😂the letters made it look horrid. It looked like it belonged in Betty Crocker’s kitchen as a bench. Yours looks sweet. Made me debate making one for my 01 f150 as it is held up with ratchet straps

@@SteepintheWoods I made one just like it today and it just so turned out that way like even after watching the video I figured I'd already had a tailgate. Was a bit too big so I took the bottom end of a wooden bench , took the legs off of the seating planks ; skilsaw'd the ends off just wide enough to slide right into the end of the truck bed. (First timer on a skilsaw and also it's to a trailer I resurrected from an abandoned houses woods. A truck bed trailer. Didn't have a tailgate well guess what buckaroo 🤝 my buddy even had a spray paint called 'charcoal oil something' so I painted after taking the trailer in and around town. And to work. And to think this was all by coincidence.. crazy bro. Keep posting if you feel like doing so you're videos are awesome!
