If you're new to polishing paint -- or you just want to improve your existing skill set -- this is a must-watch conversation. Yvan shares wisdom from his 40+ years of detailing, answering questions like...do you need to do the "cross hatch" pattern when polishing? Is heat or pressure a good thing for paint, and what's happening when paint heats up? Does a damp pad cut less, or more? And what's the best way to clean pads, anyway?
Curious to find some of the products mentioned? Here's the polishing line up from DIY Detail:

GOLD STANDARD WAFFLE PAD: bit.ly/GoldStandardWafflePad

The pad washer was one of the best purchases I have ever made on top of the gold standard. I needed some bigger pads so i went with buff & shine waffle pads although I use the yellow waffle pads on my DA's, They work phenomenal! Amazing content. I can validate that same variables with a rotary and 21mm the 21mm cuts more. Although once in a blue like Nick says cutting with a rotary is fun and doable but we find ourselves chasing the rotary defects from cutting which can take 2 extra steps as opposed to just cutting with a da then finishing with one pad on the rotary.

Good video. I have a Flex XC3401 I bought in 2007 when it was hot. It’s kind of a pain on some surfaces. Is there anything it’s good at or should I ditch it for a rotary or 15mm random orbital without forced rotation?

My question is more appropriate for this video. Do you know that the temperature of a black hood on a sunny day is within 100 degrees Celsius, and the heating from an eccentric rotary machine at maximum speed under load and in slow motion is a maximum of 45 Celsius...?
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 5 ай бұрын
Correct, but when the sun heats it, there isn’t a pad spinning on the surface trying to rip the fragile paint off.

So if low speed is key to cutting (with right pad and abrasive combo), then what are the key variables to finishing/polishing for maximum gloss? Is it faster arm movement with low speed? Or fast speed with rapid arm movement? Or same technique and entirely dependent on the product/pad combo?

Slow speed, slow machine, appropriate pad.
