Appreciate your kind feedback. The short answer is before I take off I hold the drone up roughly in the direction I will be flying and check exposure. Then I can change the ND if necessary before take off. I will put together a video on how to determine which filter and expose correctly - thanks for the idea!

As in photography you should always have backup gear. With that in mind I have decided to save for a DJI Mavic 3 , if you have an opinion on this I would love to hear from you. Keep up the good work. Hi Matt! Thanks for your informative videos. It would be of interest to know your thoughts on ND filters for the new Mini 3 Pro as well. I see that PolarPro is releasing a combination of ND and adjustable polarisation filter for this drone/camera. In 8, 16 & 32. Which is fine for my usage in mid Norway. But there are probably others to consider frm a pricepoint view. The DJI set comes with a filter way above what I find useful. Looking forward to your thoughts on this and possibly a video on the topic for the Mini 3 Pro!

Glad to see you using PGY Tech. I debated between these and the FreeWell filters. And while it lacks a 4X, if you put on the 8X and move the ISO to 200, you get the same effect with still excellent quality. The PGYTech filters are also all polarized, and while they don't rotate, with the Mini 2 you are always shooting horizontally, so they don't need to rotate.
@willieevans3527
@willieevans3527 2 жыл бұрын
@@StreetN1ckel No, I think by "horizontally" he means the drone always shoots in landscape format (picture wider than it is high), the gimbal doesn't rotate through 360º like a circular polarising filter can. Not that you'd be able to rotate a circular filter 100 metres up in the air!
@marino3780
@marino3780 Жыл бұрын
rotation of the PL filter has nothing to do with rotation of the gimbal?! You rotate PL filter to adjust it to the degree of light falling on some surface in the scene. Another thing. Even when you set your PL filter angle, you will go up, turn in another direction and for that you will need different angle for the PL. It doesnt make sense. And you cant rotate it in air. So I dont see some good points about it.

My local DJI factory store will not sell ND filters for the Mini 2 (but they do for every other DJI aerial camera) saying the reason is that filters cause too much wear on that tiny gimbal and can cause an early failure of the gimbal. Food for thought.

Some interesting comments have been posted here especially the ones referring to overall drone weight with a filter attached. The response by one Mini 2 owner stating that his local DJI no longer sold filters for this drone out of concern for the increased load on the gimbal more or less sums up my own thoughts on the subject. The gimbal is a very sensitive part of the entire drone as can be seen from the fine adjustments one is able to set to yaw and my own personal view is that increasing the gimbal weight by the use of filters can, in the long term, only serve to shorten the life of it or, at a minimum, affect the overall stability e.g. the ability to accurately self level.

I think polarising filters are a gimick on drones! How can you dial in the correct angle of polarisation when the drone is so out of reach? Just buy some cheap nd filters and enjoy your flying camera without wasting money.
@TheDroneCreative
@TheDroneCreative 3 жыл бұрын
Certainly, on the Mini 2 they can be a bit of a gimmick. Understand the need for them on larger drones with a more detailed image. You are right though, adjusting the polarisation while flying a drone is an art in itself!

Hi when I use a ND filter do I have change the shutter speed? Thank you
@royevans4581
@royevans4581 2 жыл бұрын
Change it to twice your frame rate so you get more natural looking video with motion blur. So 4k 30 fps you want 1/60 shutter speed. 1/60 is slow and too much light will enter without a filter, because it is spending more time open and this will make your videos appear washed out. A suitable filter for the conditions will compensate for this. Watch video again for more clarification.

I usually just use anti-flickering software to reduce these flickering and jitters. I understand the rule, but I always HATED using it. the mini 2 does a pretty good job at anti-flicker, to begin with. If you want motion blur, sure. I just don't see the point. I've been taking pictures and videos for years and never used this rule. Mini 2 motion blur isn't cinematic. Would rather just use a Davinci Resolve anti-flicker plugin or Motion blur plugin than playing time with the sun here in Alaska and/or with ND filters. Polarization with filters is great though. The only reason I would use ND filters. Can anyone convince me that I should start buying more ND filters and shooting in 1/60th?
@TeabaggEditing
@TeabaggEditing 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't make any sense when you say "Mini 2 motion blur isn't cinematic". It literally does not matter which camera you are using. It all comes down to shutter speed as explained. I've been a filmmaker for 3 years now and the reason that you want to use that shutter speed rule is to get the right motion blur. In real life there is motion blur too that you see with your eyes every time something moves fast. The 180° Shutter rule mimics this motion blur almost the same as it is in RL. Having a way faster shutter speed reduces the motion blur and therefore doesn't look "realistic" to your eye. Some might not notice it right away but in your sub Consciousness it makes you feel weird because something is off. The term "cinematic" also has a lot of meanings but getting the correct motion blur is definitely one of them. A motion blur plugin might the solution when you don't have access to ND filters but I'd rather do it in camera, cause we all know "fix it in post" is a bad attitude.

No offence...... Have you actually tried other brands......? You mention these being the best because of the way they attach but then state most brands attach in the same fashion?!? As a mini pilot, you might find similar pilots are invested by the magic of affordability. Sunnylife filters are a fraction of the price, I have never left a finger print on the glass installing or removing this brand and should you lose 1, wow £6 to replace! Again no offence but I wouldve felt this review had a bit more integrity if it was a fair comparison and not seeming like sponsorship or the like....... Kinda waiting for the smart controller review coming now but as a mini pilot who wants to spend so much on a controller......
@TheDroneCreative

None taken. I have tried other brands yes. If you watch, I mention that I found these to be the best because of build quality and the oil/dust resistance. I mentioned that most brands, especially the others I have tried attach the same way, but because of the build quality of these in particular I feel like the small hooks won't be as prone to breaking. The oil and dust resistance is also great as because of the way these and many others attach, it's hard to put them on without touching the filter glass. This is not a comparison video - simply me going through what filters I have found to be the best. Accessories can be a personal choice - so if you found the price/performance of the Sunnylife filters good, go for it. Thanks for watching - really appreciate it.
