I’ve always preferred the DJI action cameras over the go pro cameras. The interface seamed snappy and clean. The inclusion of a bigger size is a major plus. I still use my DJI action one from time to time

Agreed. I think Gopro has a slight advantage with color processing straight out of camera but the log coming from DJI is better. And with the new sensor, I think dji clearly has the quality lead again

Man you’re killing it on the edits last couple months, seriously hats-off m8! 👏👏 Is it true that this is BSI sensor on this? Another trusted YT channel reporting this and says it’s confirmed by DJI, but they’re not advertising it. Would love some more info on this … be great to see how much we can stretch the shadows/highlights on a timeline with this action cam. thx!!

Appreciate that! So they didn't tell me that however, the sensors on the latest Air 3 were all BSI so it's definitely plausible if not likely. I'll definitely try and do more detailed quality tests in the future but I was already up to 3am trying to finish this edit in time for the launch haha

I always enjoy your reviews Dan! I am picking one of these up tomorrow, sadly I dropped my original OA in the river (was about to tether it and got distracted :). The features on this are amazing. This might be a good partner with the mini 3 pro with similar sensor size? I’m really excited about that mount system, should prevent me from dropping my new osmo action in the drink in the future, and I’m sure I will use it more. I’ll order more mounts through your links. What is that vehicle suction cup mount you have? Thank you again for another great review, I’m more photographer than video so I look forward to more on this camera from you.

Appreciate that! Definitely sucks...the mount definitely helps! The suction cup I use is this: amzn.to/3QpuX1u I've had these mounted to cars at 100mph on the highway and they held. I use the double and triple suction cups.

Fantastic short film. I always love your films. Yea I would love to know the estimated battery life time for shooting in 4k 24fps. In mild weather just leaving it in recording mode how long the battery life. Thank you.

Hey man... How well does it work with a wired LAV mic for motovlogging? The Action 3 was fine if you were stopped at a light or in the garage, but even with TWO wind socks on the mic and it hidden out of the wind up in my helmet, as soon as I got on the gas and up to speed, the loud ambient noise would just blow out the audio... clipping, crackling and horrible distortion... made the audio with a wired mic unusable... Even with the external mic gain turned all the way down, no good... Cameras like the Insta360 One RS 4K, let you drop the mic gain to -18dB and that gets rid of 99% of the distortion while vlogging on a motorcycle, so long as you have a decent mic with a high SPL rating. Thoughts?

Nice thing about action cams is you can just wash them off! Looks good as new and no damage to the lens or front screen. Although I did use an action 3 on the carts for some BTS and it must have taken a rock to it because the front LCD got a hairline crack. So far all the action 4's are in perfect condition so maybe I got unlucky with the action 3 or the action 4 has a tougher screen

I use my action 4 on my jetski. I shot some video in 4k @120, and it wouldn't play back smoothly on my PC. VLC and WMP both had a tough time playing it. Is there a player that can handle that kind of resolution?

It's probably your computer. Intel and AMD didn't start supporting 4k h.265 in higher frame rates until recently

I doubt they will. They are keeping that as more entry level even though I actually use it often because the small size doesn't attract attention and I can use it in most countries

Did the lens get scratched at all? is there a clear lens cover for it?

There is a cover for it and they also had ND filters so you can always swap those if things get scratched. I definitely EXPECTED to scratch it after seeing what got kicked up on the track but everything cleaned off perfectly. I wish my camera ND filters were that durable

I can't say exactly how long it will run before overheating but I can confidently say it will outlast a gopro 11 based on my testing and DJI's testing

So the 3 didn't have what I would call a focus problem. Assuming the issue was legit (I had two of the 3's with no issues and I think it was only people none from the USA), the issue seemed to me like a miss-aligned lens or something like that. These cameras don't have autofocus...they focus on everything from a couple ft to infinity and the focus is fixed by the lens. If they have issues, it's because something was not assembled properly. I think DJI didn't address the issue properly but hopefully they learned from that mistake. I haven't had any issues on the 4 but I also had no issues on the 3

I just got my Action 4, but I couldn’t find noise reduction and sharpness adjustment at all!!! They’re not included in the factory firmware, and I’m not sure if it there is an update for this. If I activated it, then found there’s no update for these settings or the update doesn’t meet my requirement, then I couldn’t get the refund at all, this is not the right way to sell a product, hope you can contact DJI and let them do this better, update the factory firmware to include all the features you guys are promoting.

This is pretty typical with any new product these days unfortunately...I'm sure these were manufactured weeks/months ago because they were available for purchase immediately. Given that, the firmware from the factory was probably earlier than the firmware we were using. I received 2 firmware updates during my test period and the one I used for most of my video was released about a week before the action 4 was announced. So either DJI would have to delay shipping units until the final firmware was available OR they can send them with a stable firmware version that might not have everything perfect and then you can update when you activate them. It's not a perfect solution but it's really the only way to get products to the consumer faster since firmware development can continue after manufacturing.
