Lyrics:
Finally out the motherfuckin C-P-T
Off to other cities and shit
No longer just an underground hit
Movin thangs... a local nigga made good
And made a name off of making tapes for niggaz in the hood
And now, let me tell a little story
About the places that I been to and the shit that I been through
Like fightin and shootouts and bangin and shit
All because a nigga made a hit, check it
Nineteen-ninety-one, it was double or nothin that a nigga would hit
Then we broke out with the fonky shit
About bitches and niggaz and gettin drunken off that bud
I was doing the shit they hadn't heard of
But foolish was I to think that it wasn't no other cities like this
And that they didn't like this
That Compton was the home of a foot in yo ass
Where you got blast
And now that's just a thing of the past
Let me tell ya why firsthand, we did a show up in Oak-land
And niggaz was kickin up sand, to them bangin ain't nothin new
And slangin ain't nothin new
And for every nigga we done shot
They done shot two
Straight through and on since the sixties before I was born
Families of young niggaz mourn
So I'm just letting you know
That if ya plan to take a trip to the bay
Keep your hand on the clip

Gang culture was always around in America, dating back to the rise immigration on the east coast. Cities like NYC, Philly, Chicago, Newark, Boston and other's have been known to be ganglands that helped shape and build those places. Mafia in the 20s-50s was a real era. You had KKK patrolling the South since the slaves got there. They went strong throughout the 40s-70s. Black gangs are more new and this guy is rapping about how it's nothing new under the sun.

I remember when I saw this video on box videos. I was absolutely blown away by Quiks return once again another classic. If u grew up in the 90's you knew Quik took his time & he never put out garbage. When he dropped his album it was basically flawless. Production off the charts. Quik is one of the greatest of times no question.
@hennessyapplejuice8331
@hennessyapplejuice8331 4 жыл бұрын
Thank You, he was a big deal in hip hop in the 90's but once Dre and Snoop crossed over with their albums and were goin over triple platinum and other artist followed in the late 90's and early 2000's it makes Quik look irrelevant when you go back and look at his albums.His albums were still goin gold which was a big deal back then but once rappers started goin platinum consistently they just brushed off artist goin gold.If Quik had New Yorks support he probably would've been respected more but they didn't like him.Most of his love came from the midwest and south besides the west coast.When his 3rd album dropped he didn't really even go on tour and it still went gold off his name alone that's how popular he was just in the black community.If he would've sold out and tried to be on tv every minute like Snoop was no doubt white people in the suburbs would've bought a majority of his records too

@@hennessyapplejuice8331 He was big back in those days. He stopped touring after this song and all of the fights he would get in because he was Piru. He only toured the west and never strayed away from it, that's why he never became super big. But in Cali, dude is a legend!

@hennessyapplejuice8331 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesduckery Yea that's what i was basically trying to say.A few things set his career back but him stopping touring outside the west was a big part of it.I live in Ohio and remember when his first album dropped and it was huge.I had older cousins who were mid teens go to his concert and skipped school to see him when he arrived at our sports arena earlier that day.Some people was hip to doing that when artist came to town they would go catch them early on when they're checking equipment and all that sound stage stuff.Anyway they met him and said he was cool and they asked him was he a blood and they said he laughed and said what y'all know bout bloods and crips.He also told them he wasn't tryna sound like a after school special but make sure they finish school bcuz it was super important.He knew they obviously were suppose to be in school then but maybe didn't know if they skipped just to meet him or that was a regular thing to skip out.But yea Quik goin around the country he couldn't take his hood with him like he could more on the west where they all jump in cars and follow him so he was more comfortable

If you check out the song deeply, it's actually saying that it's not a good thing that those other cities "are just like Compton". The whole time, he talks about wanting to go to a place in which it's cool and people are not gang banging, only to find out, it's the same thing from back home.

I love this one. I know I grew up on NWA and when I started producing and making music people said my style was like Quik. At that time Quik wasn't my favorite but I started to embrace the fact that people say my style is like Quik because hate it or love it, he's still a legendary part of West Coast hiphop.

i’m from St. Louis and i remember when this song first came out, i was about 7 or 8 and they played this song to death on the radio (majic 108) ...the whole truth was back in them days (early 90’s) a lot of rappers would get tested when they came to this city..cats would try and run down on them, beat’m up and rob them..and for a long time, rappers stopped coming to St. Louis to come and do concerts because of that...legend has it, some of the 60’s from out here pulled that move on Quik...thats why he called out the 60’s from here on this song...this was back when the murder rate in this city was ridiculous cause of the gangs and crack goin on..but as a child, it was fun times.
