Neat installation, But please don't take this the wrong way: Why don't you mount the alltenator ABOVE the motor mount? That belt is hanging out in the wind, and that alltenator is directly behind the front wheels splatter in any wet weather. Won't it interfere with the peddles? Great idea, "China Doll" engine bikes can use a electric system. Again very nice work.

I just use The light line (it is the secondary winding on the coil probably) so it gives 3-30Volts of alternating curent depending on RPMs, so i just use rectifier, kondensator and voltage stabilizer from china that is rated for 5-35V and gives stable 12v max 3A, this is so much better even if it doesn't light at idle, because you wouldn't have a hole in your side cover.

@djwillk6 жыл бұрын
Cory Miller , yes that would be optimal, I might think on that idea. Have a bearing included in the kit. Since the end user is the one to drill the hole in the side cover, I didn't want to make it"the hole had to be exactly yadda yadda yadda size, our it won't work". Lol. Without the seal, there's a little more room for slight error with the hole size, with the sacrifice of a completely sealed side cover. But, if done carefully, there's very little room for crud to get in there. But I agree with you, sealed would be optimal.

Bill Collins , yes, a PMA still outputs ac voltage. So a regulator/rectifier would still be necessary, unless it was a very low voltage output, and you plan on running only filament bulbs, as they can run on both ac and DC, as long as the voltage doesn't run past their maximum input voltage ( that for if your using ac voltage with no regulator)

It's advertised as 12 volts. It will achieve that bit only at wide open throttle. And only gives about 1/4 of an amp. There simply isn't enough windings on the coil to produce any real usable voltage/amperage. Plus it shares the magnet with the spark plug coil,and robs you of power for the plug
@DirectCurrent4u18 күн бұрын
I've been using An auxiliary coil for over 30 years to charge my battery. It puts out 1.3amps at Idol. I have no issues with it pulling power from the bike or the coil. I am charging a 18 amp Hr lithium battery with it and it runs everything you can put on a bike, headlight tail light turn signals and all my accessories and the best part about it is it's all inside the case and watertight, the only thing I have external is the battery which is in a weatherproof enclosed case, along with my voltage regulator and fuse box. If you can handle basic electricity and Ohms law this is the way to go, especially if you're on a budget. Keep it simple and factory and most important. Have fun doing it.👍

This altenator would take away a huge amount of your already small amount of horsepower. 2 horsepower is what the engine already puts out on a dyno test.
@djwillk5 жыл бұрын
Agreed Shane. But as long as your load doesn't exceed the input,there's only a negligible load put into the engine. In past tests I've only experienced a less than 1mph difference in top speed,and no noticeable difference in acceleration. At half throttle, the alternator is putting out 14.7 volts dc and 7 amps. A fully loaded led lighting system should only draw about 3.5 amps. That's a great point you brought up though.
@urmomsahoe16 жыл бұрын
For everyone here they sell a piece that goes on the other side of the magneto coil. Its is a separate coil that produces power. Much simpler than all of this nonsense. You can get it from gasbike for 25 dollars. Just go to gasbikes website and search "12V Generator" in their search bar. Theres also a video on youtube of how to install it.
@djwillk6 жыл бұрын
Drcool52 , yes the little mini gen that doesn't work. It's impossible to get any workable voltage out of those small windings, no matter what the claim is. There just isn't enough room under the side cover to put the amount of magnet wire you would need to achieve any real voltage. You also have to take into account that you need rectification of the AC voltage coming out, to make it into usable DC voltage. After experimenting with that particular"mini gen", the most voltage I could ever get out, at wide open throttle, with no load on the rear wheel, was about 3 volts AC. After rectification your left with around 2.2 volts DC and 1/8 of an amp. My system is designed for people who want to run full lighting systems on their bikes, as well as a few accessories.
@urmomsahoe16 жыл бұрын
Thats why you get an atv battery and a rectifier. During the day your battery charges and then at night you should have plenty of power to run a lighting system as long as its led. As for your claim that you only got 3 volts and an 1/8 amp I doubt that a bit. I'll come back here when I get one and show my results. But I do respect that you actually argued your product instead of just deleting my comment.
@djwillk6 жыл бұрын
Drcool52 Not at all, I appreciate the input. I've had a couple mini gens, one from the eBay seller"mightywonderful creations" and another from gas bike. The eBay seller also sold a small external black box that zip tied to your seat post tube. It contained a half wave rectifier circuit, as well as a few voltage doublers. That's how he was able to get that small winding to produce 12 volts from 3. But, if you double your voltage a you half your amps. That's why it just can't work. What can you run from a 1/8 amp? Maybe a small flashlight LED, if you're lucky. My system was designed so you could use anything you want, 24 hours a day, lights, USB chargers, etc. It's modeled after a motorcycle system, just not as many amps. Mine tops out at 14.8 volts and around 8 amps. My complete LED lighting system only draws 1 amp. I have the voltage regulated and rectified with a universal 4 wire regulator/rectifier. This system is the culmination of about 2 years of experiments. I can give detailed answers but that would not be in this thread. Lol.

torque is not measured in grams... also the amount of torque required to turn an alternator is dependent on how much electrical load is demanded from it.
@djwillk6 жыл бұрын
bradley morgan gram force millimeter? Decimeter? I can't remember. But it's a miniscule amount. With my lighting kit only drawing about 1.5 amps, and that's with high beam, brake lights and a set of turn signals blazing, the generator has no problem keeping the 12 volt 5 amp battery fully charged. It's putting out 12.9 volts and close to 4 amps at idle speed, and then 14.8 volts and close to 7 amps around 1/2 throttle. That's the bike being under load, with 180# rider. Under normal lighting conditions, headlight on low beam, and just tail lights, the current draw is 0.86.
@bradleymorgan82236 жыл бұрын
that's not bad, pretty efficient lights it seems. but torque units are a measure of force (usually newtons in SI) multiplied by a distance (meters). so a torque of 1 newton meter will rotate a wheel that's one meter in diameter with a linear force of one newton along the outer rim.
@djwillk6 жыл бұрын
bradley morgan thanks for the explanation, I was trying to explain the necessary forces needed to run the generator. It's almost negligible, but lacked the correct terminology to explain it so most could understand. I know it uses neodymnium magnets with North/South running the length of each magnet, so while it's being attracted to one set of windings, it's simutainiously being repelled by the previous. It's quite a remarkable little unit. Took a bit of research and a chunk of my own change in failed attempts before I found it.

@@QuinnHartmann Do you know how small that value is? Also, nano grams isn't even the correct unit for torque, it's newton meters. Btw, 0.05 nanograms is 5*10^(-11)g. Even if he meant to say newton meters, such a small amount would suggest that he has an impossibly efficient system lol.

Different strokes is why. VBBL lights will pass a dot inspection to get your bike street legal, in States where it's viable to do so.

@@djwillk there's a video I made how I got my lights hook up. It's just as bright then on this video and you are running down your power on your engine meaning it won't go fast as it should.

@@derekthompson6653 I agree. I've got some lighting systems that are rechargable, so no alternator, bit over also got systems out there that use a battery and my generator system, that have been going for years. I believe options are good. What might work for one, might not speak to another.
