Excellent that you explained the difference in so called standard lengths between manufacturers as most golfers do not realise this.

This demo is more the correct way to figure things out. Every golfer has a personal swing-style that needs to be taken into heavy consideration when deciding what the correct shaft length should be. My new irons are actually 1 inch longer than standard and they "feel" right at the very low limit of what I can handle as I have an upright swing style and also don't use the common inter-locking hand grip most golfers swing with, so I am actually using more of the available surface area of my club's mid-size shaft grip when I grip the club with my own preferred method. All these variables added up to me requiring a longer shaft length than even I had originally anticipated. It is always easier to leave your club shafts too long rather than too short, as they can always be cut down and re-gripped later on down the road when you figure out the exact shaft length down to the most accurate millimeter that works best. In short, get fitted by someone knowledgeable, and get the right clubs, with the right shafts installed, customized with the correct sized grips. Golf is difficult enough as it is, and it becomes a virtually impossible experiment in perpetual failure and frustration unless the right customized equipment is used. Watch and learn.

Good points Tony. Only one additional point that if cutting down the shafts after the manufacture build, it will effect the swing weight so needs looking at! Thanks for your comments 👍🏻

@@TruGolfAcademy Agreed. However, it should also be emphasized how rare it probably is for standard stock shafts on any set of new off-the-shelf golf clubs to be a perfect fit for any buyer. It is virtually a guarantee that most stock shafts will not be the ideal length and stiffness for most players right out of the box, so all the more reason to best get fitted in a simulator to determine more precisely exactly which flex shafts, their lengths, lie angles, and also which grips are needed straight from the factory. The issue of swing weight was very important to me which is why I ended up choosing a heavier tip shaft installed in my forged head irons.

Length of shaft won’t necessarily effect spin rates. Unless more speed created. Spin is a factor of speed and the difference between the angle of attack and dynamic loft (look up Spin loft) for more info

This is something I’m working on. Picked up a set of Nike irons recently and they are about a half inch longer than standard 38.75 five iron. They seem to agree with me as long as I maintain my tempo. Will I find myself going over the top more or coming from the inside more as a tendency. I’m really looking at the strike on the club face to monitor this issue. It seems that I’m closer to the heel on most hits which tells me I’m coming from the inside on most swings. Am I on the right track? Please reply. Thanks . By the way I am 5 ft 6 . I don’t think a little longer club is a bad thing from your Ian Woosnam story
@TruGolfAcademy
@TruGolfAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerry, a heel strike won’t necessarily be from an into out path. I see it also when the arms move to far away from the body. You would need to look at on video or see the path numbers. I would say a longer shaft will normally encourage a more rounded swing. Heel strikes would normally be when the shaft is too long. Best to test strike with a few different lengths and see what effect it has! I hope that helps? Happy to take a look in an online lessons? Jon

question for you trugolf academy, my lie on HMT is always toe down (need to bend it upright) but even when i bent them upright, i still hit the balls on the toe. i am 5'10" (178cm) which suggets standard length or 1/4" longer and still had my irons 1/4" longer. club path and face angle are pretty straight. any idea?
@TruGolfAcademy
@TruGolfAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
I would only adjust if ball flight tells you , you need to. If too flat, would promote pushes. Toe strike on face itself different to toe down with lie angle, not related. Perhaps look at hand path through impact and whether you’re maintaining posture on video. Longer shafts should help but as tried, check out the swing

@TruGolfAcademy
@TruGolfAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jordan, I would suggest the extra inch would help a lot. Really should look at wrist to floor measurement as well as height, go to Ping’s website or Google there static fitting chart and check on there. Ideally also try if you can go to a pro shop and hit, std, plus half and plus 1”, looking at consistency of strike 👍🏻

@@jeremyburris4890 Jeremy... if you are 6 6". there is almost no possibility you are a standard length club. Go to a retailer or see your course pro to have them fit you. If you have a good set of clubs you like, they can either plug them (if adding an inch or so) or reshaft them if its over 2". Plugging is simply cutting the grips and putting in extenders in the shafts so that when regripped, the club length is longer. A cheaper but effective way to lengthen your clubs.

I am confused about fitting for static length of clubs. I have clubs that were built for me 1 inch longer than standard (my wrist to floor length is a little over 38 inches while common belief is the 7 iron standard length is 37 inches). My 7 iron swing weight with TT XP-95 R300 shafts is D5. Lie angle set at 2 degrees upright. A different fitter is now telling me this setup is wrong. He says it's better to stay closer to standard length and adjust the lie angle instead to set the bottom of my swing. He says it also stiffens the shaft by lengthening them. Confusion reigns! What to do? There seems to be more than one philosophy regarding all this. Is wrist to floor a useless measurement?
@TruGolfAcademy
@TruGolfAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, I would only ever use static measurements as a start point in the fitting or if the dynamic measurement weren’t consistent enough (only really a complete beginner). With a wrist to floor around 38” I would expect you to use longer shafts. This doesn’t effect the flex. You should use the longest and lightest shaft you can still strike out the centre!
@ojo3lo
@ojo3lo 3 жыл бұрын
You would think clubfitters would have clubs with different shaft lengths ready to try out. The places ive went to didnt have anything smaller than a standard. Id rather have a club too small than too long. At least with a small club you can be more bent over at impact and less likely to flip it too early.

There's no way that only 3 shots can give you a valid sample. You should have taken 10 or more then you have sufficient data to formulate an opinion. Mathematically you would ignore the best and the worst as flukes and take an average of what's left. And average of one shot ?????

For me at 59yrs old 5'7" with bad back, although they play a full ten yards longer, the main advantage I find in the inch longer shafts on my forged Hogan irons over my standard length Wilson Staff forged irons (which are two swing points lighter at D2.8 vs D4.6) on a nearly identical forging , is not bending over as much saves me a lot of back fatigue ,( which causes me to not turn & pull the ball a bit and even worse, lift my back early & hit the ball thin) ,although they say you can't buy a shot, two beers at the turn is my other game saver, seems to relive the tightening of my back and my tendency to lift my back, or pull my shots :)

Here's two tips... if you are doing a video on comparing shaft lengths, don't take 5 of the 12 minutes continually talking about what you are going to do. Just do it... second... the chart that shows the results is too small to read. I don't need to see you staring at the screen. Make the results screen fill the whole page.
