Today I'm going to discuss the age old question: does new gear matter? Has new technology helped make me a better sports photographer? Hint: NO! That said, I want to share my thoughts and opinions on how my sports photography has evolved with technology, starting with the original Canon 1D, to the current flagship the Canon 1DX Mark III.

Thanks Mike! Yeah, you may be more likely to get the ball in a great spot in a frame due to fps, and your file will be much cleaner, but a photographer still has to put him or herself in the right spot, and know what to look for. Happy shooting!

My pleasure. I will eventually do a follow up video to this because obviously the newer, top of the line gear is awesome, but there are definitely some tips and strategy you can employ to get the most out of your gear - especially if it wasn't a "flagship" camera at some point. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Jonathan! You're right, even I would have a difficult time telling the difference, particularly low ISO during the day. If I looked really closely and zoomed in you might be able to tell the difference just by fine differences in color reproduction, sharpness and artifacts, but most people wouldn't be able to tell.

I just bought a used Canon 1D mk2 N, in "Excellent Condition" with 6 month warranty, for $250. I'm aware of its flaws (poor ISO performance mainly) but I'm also aware of its qualities (premium build quality mainly). Let's face it, great cameras don't become bad cameras just because technology moves on. I have other cameras for high ISO work, but I see this as a design classic with a $4,000 discount.

Interesting video and it was nice to see the comparison to the classic. Just found your channel today. I have owned Konica Minolta 7D, Canon 20D, 1D2, 1D3, 1DS3 and currently use 1DIV. I have never been a pro, but have covered a few events as semi pro during 1D2 era and nowadays I just shoot as a hobby the BMX races my kids take part in. Next looking into buying a 1DX and 100-400 5.6 II. I still use 1DS3, since it is my only FF, but it has shutter bounce at 1/500 and over and can no longer be repaired. Agreed, buying a better camera does not make you a better photographer. Positioning, knowing the sport, predicting the movement is what makes the sports photos. BUT I must say, that 1D2 was major leap for me and I still could shoot event with 1D2 easilly, but maybe not with nnD Canon. I must note that 1D3, was horrbile. Usually first shot in focus, then 2-3 shots out of focus and 4-5th shot in focus when tracking. I still have it, since it quickly dropped in monetary value and there is no point in selling.

Thanks for watching! The original 1D and the Mark II were awesome cameras. Both models were heavily used for me probably all the way up until the late 2000s. The 1Dx Mark I is still an amazing camera. If it weren't for the fact that we've recently switched to the mirrorless system, I'd probably still be using it today. It is still a incredibly capable camera, despite being 9 years old now.

Great post. It's really helpful to hear from a seasoned professional. Gear is helpful, but as has been said, the most important piece of gear is the one 12 inches behind the camera. One interesting thing I've found in my home area (central Connecticut), is that I'm not allowed to bring a good camera, say a 7D with a 400mm lens, into an AHL hockey game at Hartford's XL Center, nor a soccer match at Trinity Health Stadium. Since I'm only a hobbyist and not a professional, I don't have press credentials, and if I want to take photos I'd have to use my phone, which is absolutely not how I like to shoot. (Perhaps this has something to do with the Name, Image, Likeness thing that has recently become NCAA policy?) I distinctly remember bringing my old 300D and a 200mm telephoto into the bleachers at Fenway Park a few years ago with no issues, but maybe that policy has changed too.

"We are drawn to the latest and greatest shiny pieces of new technology." Fortunately not me. New cameras are released every now and then. Does that mean I'll also have to go on buying them non-stop? Never, even if I'm affluent enough to get them all. You correctly demonstrated that with a Canon EOS 1D against 1Dx Mark III. In order to create the minor advancements; it took six iterations! This is where sensible people must ponder and make a correct choice. I bought a used 1D Mark IV in November 2021. It's neither 1DxIII nor R3. However, I can effectively shoot almost all the shots those modern cameras are capable of. My wildlife photography DSLRs are 1DIV and 7D. Armed with these tools plus some great super telephoto native L lenses; I can easily visit any national park on earth and return with stunning images. In fact, I'm already doing it. You are spot on that modern gears do not make us better photographers; skills do. Thank you for the video.

I have been a pro motorsport photographer for 50yrs, I had the DCS520 before the 1D. Looking back at images using the 1D they almost seem sharper than using a 5Div. I did wonder if it was because the sensor was 4mp and the lens resolve 20mp! Now, using a similar lens the body is 30mp, who knows, only cropping with 30 or 50mp is a great bonus. I do know that these days the additional improvements, self cleaning sensors, better iso performance, even IBIS is a godsend.

LOL! Now re: gear. For a still photog, the 1Dx II to a 1Dx III is not a huge leap forward. And in my opinion, even a 1Dx I to a 1Dx III isn't that big of a leap either (unless you do video work). I'm definitely in the camp of running your gear as long as it still has life in it too. Thanks for watching!

Well, if you learning photography and you want to go from basic, NO. Newer cameras won’t help you too much, you probably will end up selling it. But, if you have some experience in photography you will appreciate the eye detection with an improved AI focus tracking. It will get your job done quicker and better for sure. But, it’s not the best camera what takes the sharper picture, it is the lens. The better glasses you have, the better pictures you will get. 😊

I like that you bluntly say, the photographer has 2 imagine the final shot& prepare & practice more. I’m looking 4 higher burst rate & I’ve read problems with canon 6d mark 3 or Canon 90d the 1dx is expensive & I like birds in flight & at a loss of what camera to help me. Get this right Nikon expensive & all current lenses have an EF mount. At a loss of what to do here, but your video was helpful. I subscribed. Look forward to many more videos. Godspeed.🙏🏻

Hi Deb, thanks for watching. While it's true that preparation and practice will help you, gear can make your life easier. You're right though, with something as small, fast, and erratic as birds in flight, I'm not sure how much entry level gear will actually help you. You don't have to get the newest cameras, but even consider some older version of the 1D. Perhaps a 1D mark IV or 1D mark III will be good enough if you're looking to save money. It won't have quite the megapixels or frame rate as the new camera, but you will have great results with the autofocus compared to the 6D or 90D.

Thanks for watching Peter! Well don't get me wrong, expensive gear definitely helps, but a lot of that technological advantage can be overcome to a degree with good knowledge, positioning, etc. Best of luck! I would make the argument that better lenses are going to help you get more consistent results than upgrading your camera body.

That's a great camera to start with! To learn photography I would always recommend buying a used 1D/1Ds either Mk1 or Mk2 over a brand new 'beginner level' DSLR. Today's RAW processing software (I prefer DxO PhotoLab over Lightroom) closes a bit of the gap between these old and modern camera's.

At the end the key is knowing the limits of the gear. I have used a lot my Nikon D1, D1H and D2X. The ISO limits in the D1 were worse than the Canon because it created lines patterns instead of noise, a side of that, I enjoy this cameras a lot.

Hi Yutty, thanks for watching. I've had a battery die and miss a shot but never had a whole camera outright quit on me during a shoot. That said, I have had shutters go on me. Best case scenario in that situation, you can actually still shoot, but you will likely what looks like a hot or dark spot go through every photo. Fortunately it's a relatively inexpensive and easily performed service and your camera should be good to go for a while.

Absolutely agree that better gear won't make someone a better photographer. However, better gear can make the shots you take look better. Is the cost worth it? That's up for debate, and that may be a different answer for everyone. I started on a Canon 6D, then found a very lightly used 1Dx, then found a decent condition 1Dx-II. I went from an old, but great condition Tamron 70-200mm 2.8, to a Canon 70-200mm IS 2.8, to a mk-II. None of that made me better at shooting sports, but I probably took 30k pictures during that time, and I became better at it. I could see an improvement in image quality as well. I buy used and shop around before making the purchase. For me, it's understanding that the gear doesn't make me better, but the gear can take better quality pictures....clarity, color, focus, better fps, etc.... Would I love a new R3 and some of the glass to go with it? Why not? But I just can't drop $30k to replace my old DSLR kit with mirrorless. Plus, I'm a hobbyist, not a pro that does it for a living. Like many, I love gear videos, but I get way more from videos about where/how to shoot specific sports and what settings to start out with. Your channel has helped me a ton with that!

Yes you are absolutely right. This is a video topic I want to touch on in the future. But the 1Dx in my opinion was one of the biggest leaps forward as far as camera and AF tech, over it's predecessor the 1Dm4 (and likewise the D4 over the D3). I'll be discussing why the first 1Dx is still a good camera even 8 years after its launch so be on the lookout for that. Thanks for watching, and happy new year!

@@JerryTLai I am a 1D Mark IV user, and have had a chance to use the 1Ds Mark III. I find it a bit difficult to justify the price tag of the 1Dx when in theory, I can purchase the two bodies aforementioned. Is the leap as large as they make it seem? Plus, I think I would mostly benefit from the FOV from a FF sensor and the second multi controller for vertical position the most. And also, I’d like to know if the viewfinder in the 1Dx Mark I is the same style as the 1D Mark IV and previous as I tried a newer 7D Mark II body and the AF point glow was a let down for me. Thank you, and I’m looking forward to the video!
@JerryTLai
@JerryTLai 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Enrique, The 1D Mark IV was a pretty leap forward from the 1D Mark III (I don't have experience with the 1Ds Mark III), as it fixed a lot of the softness issues found in many of the 1Dm3 bodies. The 1Dx Mark I uses BLACK squares to indicate focus points, where the 1D Mark IV glows RED. That is a major gripe many photogs had when the first 1Dx came out - it was pretty hard to see the active focus point.
@NoName-jq7tj
@NoName-jq7tj 3 жыл бұрын
I had the original 1D & to be honest I would never go back. I still use the 1D Mark IV. I think the latest pro bodies has simplified the process for photographers. You can crop large parts of a photo still retaining quality. Light sensitivity as been challenged heavily by manufacturers in each incarnation allowing for extremely decent artificial light shots. I sometimes think with all these advancements it has leaned towards a point and shoot mentality. The shutter burst rate of around 14 frames per second is just insane & depressing. You can never miss a shot which is great but at that time shifting through them is a nightmare because each frame in a sequence is more or less identical. Many photo editors complain these days that there too many photos to shift through.
@JerryTLai
@JerryTLai 3 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, I wouldn't willingly go back either... but if I were to lose or have all my gear stolen and the only thing I had left was the 1D collecting dust in my closet, I think I could make it work. I do agree, these new 20fps or 30fps cameras are a bit of a workflow and storage nightmare. Thanks for watching!

One needs to look at the overall picture. Canon, Nikon & Sony are just competing for market share against each other. The photographer like a consumer is just a pawn & are obsessed with all this new stuff . Ive never been into the new technology. That’s just headless chicken mentality. Rene gives good advice... investment in lenses is the way to go. The camera technology changes so fast like computers, and becomes "out dated" so quickly. Hello Jerry. Great video as always. I’m shooting on a Canon 80D. It’s a good camera and is 24 mp. I was thinking of purchasing another camera with some more features like a 5D mark IV. But that camera is only 20mp. I’m disabled and just shoot for a hobby. I like shooting wildlife, landscapes and sports. So with that said maybe the 5D mark IV isn’t what I need to be looking at. Do you have a suggestion on a good camera for me and do I need to be at a certain MP like 20 or higher? Id love any suggestions and advice you may have.

In all seriousness, it was (and maybe even still is) a great camera. There were a few flaws that I remember with it: I think the images tended to be a little green, and the battery life was not so great. But Canon definitely learned a lot from that camera and it's amazing to see how much it has evolved in nearly 20 years.

Hi Armando! Thank you for watching. If you are strictly a still photographer and don't care much for the video functions, then yes the difference between the 1Dx (which is nearly 10 years old now) and the 1DX Mark III are actually not by very much. In fact, one of my photogs at the World Series shot with multiple 1Dx cameras and the files hold up perfectly well for such a big contest.

@@JerryTLai Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I was referring strictly to still photos. The improvements in image quality, and even AF quality of the 1dx-3 over the original 1dx do not warrant the price difference for an amateur like me. Thanks for confirming that the 1DX still holds up. I just bought a used one and am very happly with the clean images, the reliable AF and the ultra reliable metering system!! I love your videos. I know this is an older video but if you can answer it would be a help. I'm a high school sports photographer for a local news source. I take thousands of shots a season as I cover football, basketball, track, tennis, golf, soccer and things like prom, graduation etc. My canon products have been workhorses but I've never used a 1D/1DX series yet. I am looking at buying a used one and am wondering what your thoughts are on 1DX models with 150-200k shutters? I have way more than that on several Canons like the 6D and 7D and the shutter still seems to work fine. However both are aging and I am looking to more towards the 1DX series. Thanks for any answer if you see this.
@JerryTLai
@JerryTLai 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John - Thanks for watching. In all my years of shooting, I actually only have had a handful of shutters go out on me. Truth be told, it's not that big of a deal as long as you have at least one backup camera to get you through the rest of the shoot. A replacement shutter is an easy and relatively inexpensive fix that will last you a while. I wouldn't hesitate to get a unit with 150-200k clicks, and I think you'll see pretty quickly how much easier your life becomes with a 1D-series body.

In my opinion, there is not a big jump between the various 1Dx line of cameras. Yes, you will have better high ISO characteristics, and slightly larger image to work with, but it's not leaps and bounds ahead of your old camera.

Canon has packed a lot of autofocus technology in the 1DxIII. It is #1 in that regard. Guys who make money capturing sports events need that to make a living. I would love to have a 1DxIII, but I don't shoot photos at sports events. I can't justify it. It is one hell of a camera.

@JerryTLai
@JerryTLai 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Xander, back with the older cameras I would often shoot at 1/800. I found that to freeze most action that didn't involve throwing a ball or swinging a bat. In high school gyms I have even gone down to 1/400 - 1/500, but you will frequently get fingertip blur when people run at those speeds.

Enjoyed your video! Do have a question on the new 1Dx mark iii ... is the image quality and sharpness really better than the Mark ii or is this just hype?
@JerryTLai
@JerryTLai 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, the image quality is improved but in my opinion sharpness is about the same. There is a lot of talk about a faster/smarter improved AF processor too, but I can't say that it's had an impact on my keeper rate. I've only had the III since the pandemic began, so my usage with it has not been very extensive. I would have to play around more with the eye and face detection to see if that has a large impact on improving my keeper photo rate. Is the III worth more money? Almost certainly just based on the technology inside. But is it a quantum leap forward over the II? I would need some convincing, and some more real time with it. Thanks for watching!

I still use the 1DX MII and I'm still happy with image capture. I would however get the 1DX Miii if I was going to start from scratch and had the cash. I like the thought of a lot more a.f. points the miii would deliver. If you shoot at night some of the rear buttons light up.. The frame rate is a little faster. Plus the newest sensor i believe is about a stop better in low light noise, and presets for image capture to eliminate the effects of the aa filter sounds interesting. The latter may come available later in a downloadable upgrade for the 1Dx mii. But you can pick up a 1DX mii used for about half the price though but either way I think you'll be happy with your choice.

Hi Wilson, thanks for watching. I think if you don't have a need for top of the line autofocus tracking a 1D series camera would provide - for news or sports or wildlife - you will probably find the larger file size and lighter weight/portability of the 5D more beneficial. That said, both cameras are very capable for portraits, so if you think you may on occasion you need a more rugged, action camera, you should get the 1D4.

My biggest question is always the same. Where can I get good gear at an affordable price? I'm a 100% P&T disabled Vet (with PTSD) that shoots photos for free at the school my wife works at. I'm out growing my original 7D and need to move up. I get great shots at the sports games, especially the outdoor games, but the indoor games the 7D is seriously lacking. I have no intention of giving up my 7D as for that I just need better glass. As of right now, the school is gracious enough to let me borrow a 2.8 lens for the indoor sports, but as the 7D is a crop sensor there's always a lot of grain. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about being a disabled vet or begging for anything. I just need to find affordable resources so I can upgrade. Also, taking pictures that these events is therapeutic and helps be there to support my wife and the kids at the school (she coached volleyball last year and this year is coaching soccer with our son. Two of our sons coach). It's easier to hide behind the camera than sit in the stands. So, any help would be appreciated. By the way, ebay doesn't really seem that affordable since everyone thinks what they sell is made of gold.

There are many paths. But all involve passion for the games, a self desire to continually learn/improve, and finally networking/luck. For some that may be going to school for it.
