Interesting... the good ol' rear brake question LOL. I've raced since 2002, held track records, raced AMA Pro/MotoAmerica etc. I'd say my rear brake usage is minimal to none when it comes to "stopping" the bike. (unless I'm trying to motocross my road race bike off the track aka run off the track). I do use the rear brake to get my rear swing arm to squat in certain situations. I can change the geometry (swing arm angle) in mid corner. I've also found myself sometimes using it as a manual TC LOL. Pre slipper clutch days I'd feather the clutch manually to keep chatter and the chassis settled. I've found myself always setting up my slipper clutch as stiff as possible (the least amount of slip). I like to control the rear with the clutch on corner entry. It looks cool to "back it in" all sideways and such but it's NOT the fastest way around the track. People would always ask me if I use the rear brake to get my bike sideways. The answer is NO. (it's usually my bike not dialed in yet and I'm trying to sort it out) The newer electronics absolutely help with a lot of this also but that a conversation for a different day LOL

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you are one of the riders that uses the rear brake in specific situations. Yeah, I think modern day electronics have reduced the need to use it for TC or Wheelie Control, but some riders still do anyway :)

Some do, some don't. Many MotoGP riders use the rear brake, but some WSBK do not. Engine braking is so good now days that some riders never touch the rear brake. MotoAmerica at the Ridge this past weekend, you can hear the rear tire chirping as engine braking kicks in at the slowest corner. So that's an example of the rear tire skidding a little, but not because of the rear brake. I use both front and rear brake to stop the bike in a hurry. Of course you have to manage the rear brake to not lock up that wheel. A typical sequence would be, Throttle off, down shift, front & rear break, off the rear brake when approaching the corner and then back on the rear brake to help tighten the corner quickly, and then throttle out of the corner. That sequences happens a lot, over and over again! The more you use that rear brake, the better you'll get at it. You should pick up time in the corners if you do it right.

This video is so helpful. It really sheds light on why it always has such a complicated answer

Once I put a vented/cut out disc on my bike I began using the rear break. The oem disc has way too much stopping/lockup power and it was pointless to use it. Highly recommend getting rid of the oem disc.

Motogp rider do, quite a bit. They use their thumb to apply the rear brake. Jorge Martin has been using his rear brake a lot more in the past years.

I use to use rear all the time when I was riding full size touring bikes, but since I got my KTM, I hardly use it at all, except in panic braking.

Very interesting video on the use of it..I thought I was the only one who didn't really use it. It don't because doesn't feel natural ..I can never feel how force I am applying before it locks up

Thanks, I'm glad you like the video. Yeah, you have very little feel when operating the rear brake with your foot and it is difficult to know how much pressure you can add before it locks up. Some riders use a thumb operated rear brake because it provides better feel, but I'm not sure if it is worth the expense.

What I did, following an interview from Lucio Cecchinello (LCR Honda owner) about Casey Stoner, is lowering the pedal so that it's extremely difficult to give too much pressure on the rear brakes. Together with lower area disks, I think this is a way to limit rear wheel locking for those without electronics. And, btw, yeah, I am no Casey Stoner ':D

Kevin schwanz said he used his rear brake 3 times and crashed all 3 so he never tried it a 4th. I have to agree with him I tried to use mine once and I never tried it a second time

I think it’s weird that everyone’s have this discussion over and over. Clearly using the rear brake if you really know how to do, it can be a benefit, but it can also be dangerous if you do it wrong so you’ve got to be very careful with it. Someone who really knows how to ride Ken gain advantage by using his rear brake. You have to use it? Nope. But I do find it odd that people keep having this discussion around motorcycle training in KZfaq but if people are interested in it, it’s good to get out there.
