From what I’ve heard swimmers and rowers are the most well rounded athletes. I’m a former swimmer.

swimmers aren't very good at most sports, but that has changed recently as weightlifting has become the norm, which gives them more of a carryover to other sports than swimming itself.

I watched that video and it's very misleading. I computed his relative VO2 Max to be 60, which is very low for endurance athletes, top cross-country skiers and cyclists are in the 80's, swimmers in the 70's. Low relative VO2 Max is not important for rowing, since body weight is not as important. However, the crucial point is that relative VO2 Max is how endurance athletes are traditionally compared. His absolute VO2 max is high at 6.25L/min, but I computed Miguel Indurain's to be 6.6L/min, so way higher. Anyway, his absolute VO2 Max will be higher than the marathon runners you cite, since he basically weighs twice as much... The body fat % of most endurance athletes is < 12% (swimmers) and < 8% for road cyclists, 6% for runners. This rower has abnormally high body fat percentage for any endurance athlete, he's basically at the level of women endurance athletes.

When I was using the rowing machine daily everyone thought I was weight lifting but Ironically my body fat was not going down that much

Another great video! I’ve had this conversation with my buddies before. Look at it from the standpoint of an athlete’s training potential-do they have the capacity to train into those numbers. Give me Labron James, and in 6 months I’ll give you an Olympic/World champion rower. He’ll be a lot poorer; but, really fast. Charlie Will

😂excellent point. And absolutely. I think there are athletes that could develop the patterns, they’re just sport specific so they don’t need it

Good point! I guess two of the most well rounded sports are XC Skiing and Nordic Walking. Still, rowing is a powerful tool to train them both! :) Cheers

@@piotrlisiak7205 Yep! Only if you perform it in the original Scandinavian way, which includes up hill striding, bounding, double poling (more effective than Skierg) and last but not least by learning a technique called "Elghufs" which is all about running with poles... heart breaking 😛 and that's all in the "Original Nordic Walking" arsenal.

I've noticed wrestlers seem to have the power of a weightlifter, the speed of a track star, the precision of a boxer, and the endurance of a marathon runner. Just personal opinion however.

Wrestlers cant run like you think. A good wrestler will explode and strategically rest so he can do it again and again. They would be a good shoe in but I would recommend a triathlete would be a better natural candidate.

Damir would still probably reign superior. Rowers and swimmers are very well rounded athletes. They are generally pretty good at CrossFit but it doesn’t go the other way around.

An elite marathoner will most likely have a much higher vo2max per kilo bodyweight which is the important thing for runners. For rowers where bodyweight is less of a problem, the absolute vo2max is more important

Chicken and egg. Do rowers have those attributes because they row? Like, if I row will I become stronger, more symmetrical and have a higher VO2 max? Or are they elite rowers because they were already gifted with those attributes? Kind of like how the best basketball players tend to be tall, but playing basketball won't make me taller. What should I expect from rowing?
