I have been wanting to sing since I was a kid. Thinking that I have an "ugly voice" has prevented me from even trying voice lessons. I have recently decided to just go for it anyway. Regardless of what I sound like. I stumbled on your other videos for exercises and vocal training, which have helped immensely. However, This video literally brought me to tears. Sometimes you just need to hear the words.

I hate my voice, even my talking voice, but over the last year I have tried to focus on my pitch and stopping the, what I call dragging, (where I don't change keys smoothly) when I listen to my recordings. I'm getting better, I just have a long long LONG way to go. Lol I have about 4 maybe 5 songs that I would feel comfortable singing in front of people that I don't know, on a good day...and one of them is "Loving, Touching, squeezing" by Journey. I found my "ring" in the higher notes with that song lol.

I think people often forget that our voice is also an instrument and without practice it would sound pretty bad just like any other instrument.

The natural sound of my voice is not something I'm worried of. I do like the sound of my voice. But I sound like I'm 10 trying to sing good and just sound bad. Lol. And I don't know how the hell to make it sound better. Consistently. Sometime I'll feel like I made progress, and figured something out. And get a fairly good recording to back it up. And then lose the progress by the next day. I also want to sound less like a Disney princess all the time. It sounds pretty when i can get a decent technique down, but I also want to learn to have a normal sounding voice. And not ready to do a Disney musical. My Natural voice seems to fall into Disney princess territory but if i must, i want to fully sound good doing it, not like a 10 year old with no skill singing it Lol. And also I think I naturally over pronounce things and it translates to my singing. So it then doesn't sound Smooth because of it lol

Hi, how old are you? In order to remove the puerile pronunciation you have to vocalize with roundness and majestie.Imagine a little of opera as you sing,and a little of more darkening of the voice.

Dont sing with a strain in your throat muscles, that always limits you vocally - people who have that same voice you described you have when singing, from my personal experience, has always been due to trying too hard to reach "insane" and drastically ranging notes. A visual equivalent to understand better what i mean: someone new to painting trying to paint an exact recreation of The Last Supper. You might finish the piece but with such low understanding of the media your working with - its almost guaranteed itll come out looking tragic and disproportionate and just bad. It takes time and small steps to improve in any area in life, especially the more creative activities. Start by trying simpler songs - when trying to change tone and pitch dont go for a drastic change, instead start trying soft, subtle drops and rises between each note. The more you do what you CAN do the better youll get at it and eventually youll notice your voice sounds a lot better with each attempt to sing the same notes, and thus allowing you to reach more notes and have a greater sense of timbre from there! (Fyi you wont see an obvious improvement happening day to day necessarily, one day after a while of practicing your voice while flexing your vocal cords/throat muscles (strengthening them) - you'll come across an old video of you singing that sounded so bad you'll cringe in self-hatred of old you's voice. And then you'll sing the song you sang in the video but now and you'll see how much stronger and broader your voices range has become itll make you gasp! Lol 😊

one of the most important stages of my musical growth was when my friends started telling me they liked my singing voice in my mid-20s, even though it didn't sound polished. no one EVER accused me of having a beautiful voice, but they still seemed to enjoy what I was doing I was just so, so happy that anyone would want me to sing for them that was probably about 3 years after I started studying my - no coincidence here - Bob Dylan and Neil Young repertoire their songs really helped me grasp that vocal personality is just as valuable as beauty, and that my voice had enough personality to be worth sharing

exccelent commet. i stubled across a singer who has a similer vocal tone to mine and i have finally been able to start to practice and learn becouse i can see that if i improve my pitch and range i could actually create somthing enjoyable, rather than just a rough nasily verson of songs ment to be sung softer or cleener sounding vocalist.

Hi Coach Ramsey. Yes I agree with you that you need to push forward and not let peoples comments or your own negative self talk allow you to miss out on your dreams to become the best singer that you possibly can be. I have been singing for approx 23 years, and I have been told that I am shrill and that I sound false. But through my own dedication and willingness to learn, I am now a very admired singer and get a lot of compliments when I sing. It feels amazing and I get energized when I sing

It's been 3 and 1/2 months since I started following Matt on KZfaq and through the paid membership site. I started out with an old person's crap voice (yes, I'm old) and today I think I hit a breakthrough. :) I can sing high notes as well as low (I'm a Contralto) but I still sing like crap. I'm not worried, I'm in it for the long haul. Thanks Matt!

Been watching your channel for a while, nice imformation! Recently I am trying to embrace my voice as what it is. I am poperly a barritone and found no matter how high I sing the timbre is always different from those big hits tenors even if I sing higher than the original. My thoughts is with training we can stretch and change our voices to fit in different styles but no matter how far we go there is always something like a fingerprint that belongs to just one individual, and that is the one thing we have to accept and try to love it. It is so cool to be imperfect and all the singers you have mentioned in this video is my favourite. :D

Thank you for this video! Singing is my passion since I can remember. I always used to sing like my idols did. Try to copy the exact way they sing. But little did I know that I was forcing and doing it wrong. 4 years ago I decided to take singing classes and I was very uncomfortable when I had to switch to my head voice. It didn’t sound powerful, like the voices I loved. But rather like a little girl whispering. It took me some time to accept my higher pitch voice and then train it to become more consistent and powerful. My vocal coach also told me that I should accept how I sound and that what’s coming out of my mouth, it’s me. I’m not Alanis Morissette or Lady Gaga, but that’s OK. I’m well aware that my voice doesn’t please everybody but I’m aware as well that I know the technique and sing right 😊

Hi Matt: I already agree that it is possible to improve my voice and mine is getting better but I also know and understand that it takes time and effort. I've been reminded that my voice is pretty unattractive through my whole life even though it never really bothered me. But that's kind of my problem. My speaking voice is already concidered unattractive and my singing voice sounds the same but.. singing, so i really dk when i make progress. What adds to my confusion is that I do know how to sing and use my natural voice but i don't know if it's actually "good"

This is the MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE that every aspiring vocalist, songwriter and musician needs to hear and know. Very pretty or ugly voices can sometimes overpower or lose the message of the song if the song isn't written for that type of voice. This is why so many songwriters are successful. They write songs to fit their voice. Most are even smart enough to sale songs that doesn't fit their voice to other artists. It's not always about how wonderful you sound when you sing a song but is the song right for your voice? Improve upon what you got and express it through the songs that are right for you. Macy Gray is just as powerful a storyteller and singer as Aretha Franklin. Different voices, styles, successful and respected as singers. So be the next Luther Vandross, Tom Petty, Aretha, Whitney, or Macy Gray. But most of all be THE FIRST YOU!

Due to a deviated septum and probably some other genetic structures, I think my voice is a bit nasal and possibly has a buzz that I can't entirely hear myself. However, I do know that through continued practice, I have gotten better over time, though I'm still definitely amateur, and could use a lot of improvement.

Feeling this now. Recorded singing along to something recently and almost seems like I don't hear how bad I sound when singing until I record and listen to it. Feel like there something other than just pitch going on and have no idea how to correct if I can't even hear it when I sing or even know what is wrong other than I sound bad. Very frustrating for someone that loves music and can play instruments and write.

After about a decade of serious illness, my voice dropped and became a gravelly nightmare. At one point I could not sing more than about 5 notes. Then I started writing songs. My voice has been improving and I'm enjoying this interesting voice much better than that boring soprano. I've been doing your warm up exercises and seen improvement in a few weeks. I start back with my vocal coach Mary Ann Kehler next week. So I know its only upward from here.

i always think about miley cyrus when i start to get down about my voice. i understand growing up and puberty plays a huge part, but comparing her disney days to her voice now, you can see such a tremendous improvement. even from her earlier albums post disney til now, i find her overall tone and abilities have significantly improved. i love her voice and i find it very beautiful. i wasn’t describing it as that 10+ years ago and i was also a fan of her then.

i do like how you mentioned that mick jagger sounds good because he has keith richards. it's the same ideology as picking out a guitar or guitar amp. maybe a certain guitar will sound "better" or whatever compared to another one, but when playing a specific genre or style, than the other guitar will get the job done better than any other guitar can. so it's really on what the masses prefer, there is no ugly voice unless the singer is just a bad singer to begin with.

Listen to live versions of anyone you like or any song you are trying to sing. Also, listen to covers. Then you realize how much studio polishing helps many singers.

I am sure through breathing exercises and voice training people are shocked at the improvement. I was. But you have to keep it up.I do more intense workouts every other day and quicker ones in-between. Through singing songs the moods are lifted.So never give up.

The most important technique is pitch. Early Dylan had better pitch than people give him credit for, and had great energy and delivery. Later on he lost his pitch and got really bad. Bad pitch is the only real ugly.

I’m a woman and I have an unconventional voice. It’s lower than “normal” and I haven’t ever taken voice lessons just because I hate my speech patterns and the way I say things but I got a burst of passion for singing all the sudden and I just booked my first lesson this week

I call it Signature. As in, does a voice have signature. That identifiable quality where you can immediately identify the artist sight unseen. There are many many singing artists with amazing talent and range; however, their voices blend in with everyone else’s voice; their voice don’t have signature. This extends across all genres of music - pop, rock, rap, country, etcetera. But then you have artists like Snoop, Adele, Kurt Cobain, Elvis, Sinatra, The Weeknd, & others, whose voices are so distinctive that you immediately identify their signature. Signature can play a major role in an artist’s popularity; people fall in love with voices, and this can contribute to an artist having an extensive career. Can you identify a vocal lineup? Have a friend choose lesser known songs by a number of major artists and see if you can identify who’s who.

Just as a side note, Jagger co-wrote many songs with Richards. They worked better as a team, and that helped bolster Jagger unconventional voice type. I know that wasn't the point of this vid, but I just thought I'd note it.

I found out I had an "ugly" voice when I had an easier time singing along to Tom Waits then to any conventional singer, i'm starting to think I got some sort of scarring in the vocal cords or something as I had tubes to breath for a long time after an accident in my childhood, always had a problem with sounding fried and breathy and not being able to hold a tone but oh well, i'm just singing for fun in the car to and from work and when I play my keyboard anyways :)

My voice is actually great, but it’s weak. I never do warmups or anything though, I just sing along with music while I garden or wash dishes. I’m good enough that people tell me to take lessons but bad enough that recording myself makes me cry.

I have been told I shouldn't sing for my entire life. Ive been told Im tone deaf, and that I should stick to playing the keyboard and just give up on singing...but when im alone such as in the car or in the tub I feel like I can nail some songs and even feel like I wouldn't be horrified if I heard a recording of myself....but i think that singing is very much about confidence...you have to believe you can do it!

Every voice is pretty given the right song. My question is whats the right song for each kind of voice? Rock n roll voice with rock n roll songs. I think im mix of alto and soprano. What songs do i sing? A producer said i should sing celine dion or barbara streisand songs. But i love jazz. But he said i sound awesome singing celine dion songs compared to singing jazz songs. I dont know whats going on with my voice. Im confused. I guess go with the experts.

I feel like no matter what I do I won’t sound good. It has that stuffy yawning sound. And if I don’t like what I hear coming from me I sure hell won’t let anyone listen to it. It’s not pleasing, I’ve turned many people off which is a sign I won’t succeed.

My friends and family kept telling me that I sang pretty, but now that I'm taking voice lessons, I realize I suck. I feel I'm improving a bit, singing more in tune, but the fact that I tend to pick up hard rock songs doesn't help. My coach keeps telling that I hold myself back. It is very frustrating. Plus, I don't feel I have a distinctive voice, kind of sweet, yet not sweet enough to sing girlie songs

I will never be a singer My voice doesn't get very high for the music I play and I cannot hold a note my voice always cracks. I suck at singing but i can play the guitar. Wish i could sing so i could do both. I'm old to top it off I'm 62 years old.

I actively can’t stand my voice, I have wanted to be a singer from as long as I can remember however I had zero natural talent and a pretty boring voice. I got into metal because I was very angry and naturally good at screaming. I have done metal vocals for almost 30 years. I can crush pretty much any style of fry scream, death growls, and so on…However we always had to have a guitar player or second singer for the clean singing. I just could not do it. Always flat, ugly, and I would just shy away from trying. Now at 46 I’m getting a bit old for metal, and I’m no longer pissed off at the world. For the last few months I been putting in about 45-60 min a day. It’s not going well. Getting better at throat singing tho😂

Right on, Matt. Be yourself, build on what you have. None of us are likely to come close to this recording, but that's no reason to give up - the most beautiful vocal recording I know of, Andreas Scholl in the Agnus Dei of Bach's Mass in B Minor. i think some artist have bad days in the studio and good days in the studio for example when a rerocording song isnt always the best version its like u cant recreate perfection when i say rerecorded i mean the same artist doing a new version of the same song and most of them suck in my opinion becuse the original is the best

Never ever liked the sound of my own voice. Got goaded into Karaoke and belted out a song because I was a few beers deep. Two people from the crowd came up and joined as backing vocals (was an Alice In Chains song with Cantrell harmonizing with Staley). Afterwards, people were asking what band I was in. Me? Band? haha, no. But maybe it's possible? Don't let the sound to your own ears discourage you. I wasn't hearing what others did. Someone showed me a video they took on their phone and I was like who is this singing? Holy **** that's me? I was my own worst critic.

Stopped midway to say, When Philip Philips won over Jessica Sanchez and the world was pissed, thats exactly it. He was unique and i loved it and he sounded great as well. I really want to sing, I really do. I’m 12 years old and I’ve been singing since I was 9, but I decided recently to start recording my voice I hate it so much, I cried for about an hour completely denying that that’s the nature of my voice. All of my friends in choir tell me they think my voice is beautiful, but I just can’t believe them. I just wanna be talented in something 😢

Depending on how well the mic picked up all the overtones of your voice and the resonance of the room, it might sound completely off from what you really sound like to the people standing around you. Stand a bit further apart from the mic, it can make a big difference. And minute differences in the pressure in your chest, your posture or the opening of you mouth combine to have a massive impact on the quality of your voice. I learned this myself whe I desperately struggled to improve my voice after being disgusted by my sound on the mic. As a singer your body IS the instrument, and requires careful tuning.

But you are training voices but speak with a great deal of vocal fry. The Bob Dylan recording you played, well, there was nothing ugly about it, not throaty, no vocal fry, etc.

please dont diss these great singers for your clickbait. No one is calling them ugly, except for you. KZfaqrs think they have special rights and entitlement to walk all over the history of the greats. it particularly bothers me. unconventional is a compliment, ugly is a horrid word.
