Do You Really Need A Watch Winder? Yes Or No?

Today's video is all about watch winders. What is a watch winder? How do they work? And most importantly, do you actually need one?
A watch winder can be a nice item to have, however whether or not you actually need one is a personal choice. It may seem obvious, but watch winders only work for watches with automatic movements. If you've got a manually-winding watch, a watch winder will do absolutely nothing for you. The watch winder keeps an automatic watch running by turning the watch every so often, which pivots the rotor and therefore, keeps the power reserve topped off.
Reasons you might want a watch winder:
1. You like to "set and forget".
2. You have watch with lots of complications, like a perpetual calendar with moon phase (and an automatic movement).
3. You like gadgets.
One BIG reason you might NOT want a watch winder:
1. You like the act of actually winding and setting your watch.
I am actually one of those people who likes to wind my watch. I like the connection to something mechanical. I like hearing the gears turn. But--big BUT--one of my watches can be a pain in the you know what to set, especially if if hasn't been running for a few weeks. Watch the video to see what I'm talking about!

Liked the low-key matter-of-fact style, as well as the honesty about the particular winders mentioned (‘not much experience’, ‘ not a sponsor’). Actual content was exactly what I was looking for, covering all the considerations fairly. Thanks.

1:57 Any automatic watch that has a screw-down crown and is worn infrequently (i.e. beyond the duration of mainspring reserve power should be paired with a watch winder. The reason goes beyond the hassles of resetting the date on a no- quickset date movement of the older GMT Masters. The threads on a screw-down crown and the tube can quickly wear out. Replacing that tube (or worse still along with a new crown) can be very expensive if you happen to own a Rolex. Much cheaper to buy a watch winder!

I made mine, a Poor man's version: attach a long strong string or twine to ceiling with a carbiner attached to the other end. Any other secure hook will do. Close the strap buckle and attach to the hook end. Now swing it like a pendulum and it will wind up your automatic watch. I experimented with my watch Winder pendulum. Normally, about 5 full swings fully winds up my Seiko with the specified 37 hour reserve.
@tykjpelk
@tykjpelk 2 жыл бұрын
I made my own as well, but fully automatic and high capacity: It's basically a tupperware container attached to a long piece of string, like you do, but I keep it hanging from the clothesline outside. When it blows, which is always around here, it swings around and winds my watches. It can take as many watches as I can fit in the container.

I have a Stauer wrist watch and had it for about 15 years. Love it. Bought it new and a winder. Winder died after a couple years. I wear it occasionally and after it died, realized it was easier to reset the watch. Used the winder to store watch but recently noticed the holder that holds the watch started deteriorating and got sticky. Threw that part out. Keep watch int the winder box.

I also recommend Wolf winder, I have the Wolf Roadster Module Single Watch Winder with 3 watch Storage, black pleather outside and a black and brown wood finish display inside, I’ve had mine for over 4 years now runs daily with no problems(KNOCK ON WOOD). Sure it keeps my automatics running with the correct time & date which I can set on my own, but I also love it for the display factor, I am contemplating getting another one🙏🏾😌Be Safe;-).

I have several watch winders by Orbita and by Wolf. I've had some cheap/inexpensive units near the beginning of my watch journey but they all died after a year or two. Wolf and Orbita winders both work well and are nearly silent. I would caution - do not keep them in your bedroom. No matter what the sales person or ad says, you will hear them in the middle of the night.

For a watch with the ETA movements, a watch winder is highly suggested as hand winding can break the watch. I have a Hamilton with an ETA movement, I did hand wind the watch when not being worn. I am waiting on delivery of the materials to send the watch back to them for warranty repair due to hand winding. I have since ordered a watch winder that will be delivered on 03/27/2021. I will be using this on my Tissot as well since it is the Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicum which is derived from an ETA movement.

Rolex actually incorporated a quick date adjust feature in many of their 70's and 80's watches (vintage in today's lingo). I know this works on their day-datejust models, but not sure on the GMT you own. 1. advance the hour hand to 11:59 pm i.e., right before the date changes. 2. advance the time to 2 am, which causes the date to change. 3. Now reverse the time back past 12 midnight to 11 pm (the date should not have reverted, just the time). Now advance the time past 12 midnight again which causes the date to advance again.......repeat until you get the proper date. On day-datejust watch this only works for the date not the day so you must carefully choreograph both the day and the date to get it right.

Great video, just like to say that you don't have to spend a lot on winders, I have three ,one for my son; all from Floureon a chinese company and an average price of $40 usd!!! All have worked perfectly well and reasonably quiet for over two years; also on a timer for 12 hours per day whilst my solar panels are making the power- so no cost. No problems so far; so before you go and buy one of these $250 usd. upwards cost models try the cheaper one ,it can save you money.

I started using Citizen Eco-Watches when I realized I’d paid more for watch replacements than for the original watch. Faces are light sponges, any light. Been very happy with their perpetual chronographs. Have three, two tanks and a black round diver. Always correct date, can auto switch between two time zones, alarms, and good looking. 9 mo power reserve, I just leave them near a window sill for some light when not wearing. Bought the first 17 years ago, has kept perfect time since day one, never opened for any reason. Others more recent, same reliability.

there is no hassle. its just things that people overthink. for instance, they say you should have a watch winder... not really. did they have tons of watch winders at the store you bought the watch from? the answer is no. the trick is to have it stop at a convenient time for you. for instance when it lose power and stops and you decided not to wear it. just move it a bit so the watch starts again. do it little by little until it stops on a time thats convenient for you. for me, i make it stop at "8:30"ish... becuse at any given day im already awake that time and if i decide to use the watch, ill just move it when its on the exact time when it stopped. i dont even bother with day/date.. so there. no need to open the watch if you dilo it that way

I bought a new manual Rolex in 1968. Cost $83 - then, 2 weeks average wage for a 19yo. The case lasted almost 40 years & it eventually needed re-sleeping of the winder cavity or whatever watchmakers call it. Same watch today & the winder is much more difficult to screw into the case to make it waterproof. Now made to wear the case much more quickly?

I wear the automatic watch daily in the summer, so it doesn't need winding, unless I get several days(of rain) when I can't leave the house, so I wind the watch on those occasions. I have been told by my Rolex guy and others who collect far more expensive watches than I do, that its bad for the watch to leave it in a not-running state for too long. The oils will move and stiffen etc leaving you with a watch that actually needs to be serviced far more often than normal.

When you have 9 automatic watches you must have winders. When the power goes out and my winders stop, its misery resetting the watches and getting the dates set correctly. Get the Fuzzy Logic chip, everything is automatic. you set it (on) and you forget it. Works perfectly.

Is there any risks in winding your automatic watches for example every morning (excluding that one piece you are putting on your wrist)? For me it isn't a problem to wind watches every morning but if that can cause harm to the movements, I should maybe buy a winder.

it might put wear on the stem seals or even the stem or case .

Does a watch winder wear the internal parts down? I’m sorry if I sound stupid. I’m new to this awesome hobby.

I don’t have too many watches, so a winder hasn’t been a problem. I have one very accurate quartz I use for reference when setting.

For what’s its worth, I’ve heard from several watchmakers and repairers that watch winders are a really, really BAD idea! They overwind the mechanism, stress the hairspring and add unnecessary wear and tear to your movement meaning more frequent servicing WILL be required. So my eight piece winder now sits silent and motionless as a display case for my watches! Take heed gentlemen....and ladies!

The overwinding MAY be an issue for much older watches but almost all automatic winding mechanisms have a slip 'clutch' on the mainspring that prevents overwinding.

All automatic watches should be handwindable as well. Soon the 7s26 seiko watch movements which can't be handwound will (hopefully) be phased out. I have to shake my Shaiko 5 otherwise it just stops. My Seagull Ocean Star can be handwound and has a long power reserve as well. Come on Seiko you need a shake up.

Do automatic watches required to be winded ever so often? Meaning, if i don't wear nor have a winder, could it potentially damage the watch? If i wear once a month, will these longer period of no winding hurt the mechanism? thanks in advance.

One should not be needing one but I also have a dress watch with a moon face etc. and it’s not one of my daily watches so to be honest I will properly look for one soon

As long as it has an automatic movement. If I had a moonphase watch, I'd be super picky about it always displaying properly.

I have two an expensive one and a cheap one I picked up on Amazon. Since I have retired I use them less because like the made said it nice to interact with my collection.(6) and I have the time. When I worked and traveled I found them useful. But I'm reminder of something a great Watch Expert said. When your watch is on the winder the winder is enjoying your watch not you. The winder is wearing out your watch. Modern watched can sit awhile not running it does them no harm.

Euhm... is it not possible to advance the date more quickly on your GMT by going back (to approx 9 pm) and forward through 12 (midnight) several times? It works on my 50’s Universal Geneve. That way at least, you don’t need to run through 24 hours 😳
