Hello Ari this is huge news to the independent artist, I'm doing everything on my own. It's a gift and a curse. The Gift is for the Artist, you learn everything hands on and you have no contract or overhead to pay back. The Curse is for the labels, It's there own fault, if they ran it correctly and was really looking out for the artist best interest Artist would never have learned how the industry works. And all the record label employees who are getting layed off and fired are coming out telling the truth, writing books, on Podcast, and on Social media. For me I like to say to the Record labels, Thank you for not letting me in. knowledge is Power and it's a win win for the Artist. Ari I'm sharing your video, your speaking the absolute truth. Already have his book and have been following Ari for a long time now. Great interview, it almost felt like an excerpt from his book where he shared the same statistic. I won't lie though, the interview kind of made it seem like it's a lot easier for a band to get ahead in the industry than it actually is. Even though there are a lot of tools out there that are easy for the everyday musician to use, it is a LOT of hard work to grow a following and network with industry professionals to get a leg up. That said, I completely agree that your goal as a musician/band should be to become a full-time musician and build your OWN career, not to get signed. Our manager has said many times, "Labels don't want to sign you until you don't need them anymore" and it would seem Ari's thoughts take on a similar mantra. If a label signs a brand new musician they're probably not getting a great deal because the label is taking the bigger risk so they want the bigger reward if that makes sense. Something he said in his book as well as this interview though is that Ingrid Michaelson and Mackelmore aren't signed which isn't exactly true. They definitely have label support (Mom + Pop and Warner Records), but they aren't necessarily signed in the traditional sense and they built their own indie following before a label ever got involved. Super long comment, sorry. Great interview, well done for a first time guest interview on your part. Audio was kind of wonky but the content was A+ quality!

Thanks for the comment, Jeremy! Yeah, I wanted to talk to Ari about this topic specifically because I like what he said about record labels in the book & how they're not the be-all, end-all to music success. And that statistic was really startling to read as well. Definitely one that musicians should hear about. 🙂 Yes, I totally agree with your point that building a long-lasting full time career as a musician is hard work. And it can be slow, uphill process, but if you want something sustainable and want to still be making a career out of music years from now, it's just what you gotta do. Thanks for the nice words about the quality! And yep, still trying to figure out the audio issues. Tech is not my strong suit. 😥 - Jenna
