Sorry if I missed it but how do people on the Mediterranean diet live so long if they consume so much olive oil
@martinnichols45
@martinnichols45 Жыл бұрын
Its mostly because they are very active during all day and live less stressful lives . They also are happy in general and have a better social life . Don't forget that olive oil in Greece or Italy are not the as the ones we consume . Finally , all the food they eat is natural ( from their garden , pesticide free , preservatives free , hormones and antibiotics free ).
@citadelofwinds1564
@citadelofwinds1564 Жыл бұрын
The traditional Mediterranean diets are rich in fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains - grown with little or no chemicals, eaten soon after harvesting so there's hardly any loss of nutrients from storage, and eaten whole rather than being processed or refined. So the diet is high in nutrients and low in harmful chemicals, and the plentyful fruit and vegetables provide a wide range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The diet is healthy despite including a lot of olive oil because all those plant foods have protective effects that fight against the damage caused by refined oils. The typical American diet is high in processed and refined foods, and provides very little nutrients, so it lacks the protective effects of a whole foods diet. Therefore people who add a lot of olive oil to such a diet are pouring more gasolene on a dumpster fire, and their health deteriorates over the years, until they get a heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, etc. All these diseases are linked to diet, and every time a population starts to eat an American style diet, their rates of these diseases shoot sky hight. Cause and effect.

When i cut every possibly negative thing from my diet i become depressed, every single time. Not worth it for me.
@bethanyday3471
@bethanyday3471 3 жыл бұрын
well thats not because your cutting those things, its because of your mindset. you cut out the bad things and instead of thinking what a great thing you are doing and exploring how great you can make food taste without it, you are thinking "goddamnit i have remove my favorite ___ and i love __ and this fucking sucks, who care about my bodies health" it's all about mindset. if you can't do it in moderation, then like klaper said you really cant do it - and it's all about mindset. if you are becoming depressed over food i highly recommend a very good therapist. i see one at least once a month. its about the mindset change - without that you will continually be a negative person.

3:02 - The Greeks are not “the fattest country in Europe”. There has, however, been a gradual but very significant rise in obesity among segments of the Greek population since the last of the habitual famines and incessant wars which, until very recent times had been our constant companions, and had kept us mean and fighting trim for millennia. But this rising trend in obesity is certainly not due to olive oil - the idea is laughable; it is most assuredly the result of affluence, as many Greeks have over the past decades increasingly adopted elements of the calorie-rich Northwestern European and North American diet IN ADDITION to continuing to enjoy their traditional fare. It isn’t olive oil that’s making my compatriots fat - it’s American-style fast food, other highly processed and industrially prepared foods, ‘junk’ snacking, refined sugar, decadent sweets, and not least, the common practice of devouring a minimum of 5kg of grilled meats per capita at the taverna at midnight topped off by an equal amount of seafood and other gastronomic specialities, before stumbling off to bed at 2:00 a.m....It was not always so: my great-uncle Perikles, for instance, starved for the first half of his life. In the old days, he would get by on perhaps 1,500-1,800 calories per diem in times of plenty (hardly a surplus, especially considering the level of physical activity he and his fellow pastoralists exerted in the craggy countryside of Central Greece). A morsel of coarse barley bread or dry rusk dipped in olive oil and sour wine mixed with water, a handful of olives or figs, wild greens and a little fruit when in season, vegetables, porridge, gruel, or a modest serving of stewed legumes occasionally supplemented by a bit of goat cheese, fermented milk, or sheep’s yogurt - these were his daily staples during the “fat days”. In lean times - of which there was an abundance - even the least of these meagre provisions were well nigh unattainable. As for meat, butter, eggs, sweetmeats, and other dainties, these were rare luxuries which he might taste the merest samples of only at Christmas, Easter, and sometimes, if he were particularly lucky, on the greatest Saints’ Feast Days. My uncle tells the story of how once, as a child of seven, he had been severely punished by a near-sighted schoolmaster who thought had seen him eating a hard boiled egg which was presumed stolen. By the time it was discovered that the boy had been munching on a peeled head of garlic for his lunch, he had received the most savage beating of his life (no apology was forthcoming, of course, since the school authorities of the day, in their benign and unassailable pedagogical sagacity, considered that such exercises in corporal chastisement, even when sometimes misplaced, were in the end morally justified and profoundly edifying for curbing the naturally gluttonous inclinations of wayward youths who were sybaritically predisposed to eating like their elders and betters). Were it not for the sustaining power of olive oil, Uncle Peri - and many like him - would undoubtedly not have survived the long decades of war, famine, and extreme privation. Standing nearly 1.93 m (6’4”) tall in his prime, my uncle weighed barely 63 kg (140 lbs.) up until age fifty; now, at nearly one hundred, he measures several inches less, but weighs in at nearly double his wartime weight of 55 kg (ca. 120 lbs). By the early 1970s, when the hard times finally came to an end in rural Greece, he vowed there and then, to consume in the second half of his life what he had missed out on during the first part, when from earliest childhood he had been desperately, painfully, perpetually hungry. There are many of the older generation like my uncle Perikles in Greece: to them, food is the ultimate expression of love, and they revel in it. As the saying goes, “there are lies, there are damned lies, and then there’s statistics.” ADDENDUM (edit.): The hypothesis that the copious consumption of olive oil is somehow responsible for the recent rise in obesity among the Greek population is so ludicrous, that it might have been formulated by Hercules’ brother - Ridicules...

Sometimes each person needs to find what works for them! I never believed it's this or that way. Find out for yourself. Keep a positive attitude. You can do everything others say to be healthy. That still may not work for you! You know not what people like this are doing? They are expressing what works for them! Not you!!! Good luck! Think about the point I am trying to make. Ps. No meat! Bad for you? Depends on your blood type. That is another factor to be looking at.

He seriously just compared the level of obesity with those in Greece with a higher rate of adverse outcomes yet has no evidence of this. What one needs to know is that the type of fats in olive oil are omega 3's to a higher degree vs meat fat which is mostly omega 6's which are well known to be precursors to inflammatory products. Furthermore, FATS are not the issue sugar is. Olive oil paralyzes the blood vessels? The study he references says that they are "probably getting healthier in spite of the olive oil " is nothing more than a guess. It was inconclusive .

I lost 210 pounds in 3 years & I ate 2 tbsp of olive oil per day on a huge salad, I am the healthiest I have ever been, blood work is on point, this is bunk to me

I guess when you were so obese, that you could lose that much weight, then before that you must have been eating somethin else than now and not just the same food as now, but without the Oil. This video is not stating, that you can not be healthy or lose weight with oil in your diet. But instead it makes clear, that the Oil itself is not, what makes a diet healty or good for weight loss, but everything else you eat.

Some stuff here is good but there is some really bad science here. Some of which was disproved years ago. Firstly just because something is calorie dense it doesn't mean you will get fat. It is possible to have a small amount and it depends how many calories you burn. Next there is some really bad science around the whole saturated fats being bad for you idea which was disproved years ago. Look the bottom line is we need to move to a situation where we take responsibility for our own health and test things out ourselves. If you look on the internet or youtube you will find a million different suggestions for healthy living. Guess what there is no ONE way. We are all individual and just like medicines affect everyone differently so do foods. Hence you can find someone on a carnivore diet who cured some disease and someone else on a vegetable diet doing well. All I would say is a common thread would be stay away from processed food and sugar (by the way the standard American diet says some sugar is ok and drinks producers would have you think that their soda is part of a balanced diet). I found out by naturally eating in the evening and for a small time period I felt great an then discovered this has a name which is intermittent fasting. But my body told me this was good and I still experiment with different foods and time periods but I did lose 3 stone over a few years and feel great. Its a lifetime adventure but I think we need to move away from being lectured about health and we to take responsibility for how we feel and what works for us. Yes experts can give suggestions but the simple idea that a particular food like olive oil would be bad for everyone in every circumstance is really bad science and goes against years of experience and data on people who have used olive oil. Please lets be wise and not simplistic life is much more rich and complicated than this !

First yes if the food is calorically dense doesn’t necessarily make you get fat but it’s gonna make it hard for you to loss or stay at your weight + if you see an overweight person diet it’ll probably contains oils ,and dr Klaper is not someone in the “internet” as you said he’s a real doctor and he’s using science not bc you didn’t agree with him now it’s a bad science ,talking about your personal experience IS the bad science oils are refined fat that you can get by eating the whole plant (olives , coconut ,avocado, etc) & very calorie dense so it’s hard to be satisfied with your meal you’ll hit your calorie target but not your satiety.

@@dougpotosky4102 whole food plant based is a diet that every person can thrive on. Sure some people can tolerate junk food that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Fats, sugar and salt works for a lot of people because it feeds their additions. I’m not sure how people find a diet that works for them, I have never heard anyone say I’ve tried three different diets but I’m still looking for the right one. I’ve been on a whole food plant based diet for five years and no one I know has tried it so how would they know the best diet for them.

People in this moderen time know good enough about food and about healthy food and they do care about their health and food too , offcourse there are always some exceptions , but where are no exceptions , a lot of people get killed on roads but it does’nt mean roads are not safe .
