Video Essay Part 5. In this China vlog about living in Beijing as a foreigner. I walk to a Shopping Mall with an EV car showroom, and I reflect on the USA's decision to tax its population through tariffs so that they can not benefit from high-quality, well-priced cars that could help save the environment. Well done, America... you managed to show that you are not innovating.

If you were a fisherman; you work every day to provide good healthy fish to your market; and I came in and to undercut you; I didn't inspect my fish; if they looked good on the outside I let them go to market. Then my government decides to subsidise me; so I can totally price you out of the market and run you out of business; you'd probably say that is crooked. That's exactly what CCP and CHinese BEV makers are doing. There cars are total junk; they should be banned; beyond that none of them have ever made a dime, even with government subsidies & buyer subsidies. Think Chinese BEVs are good? @@ForAllLifesAdventures I am in Australia and my neighbor purchased a brand new Chevy "Colorado" mid-sized truck - which gave him no end of mechanical problems, primarily in the water jacket and pump. The car went back to the garage to be serviced and new parts ordered in from the U.S. which took weeks to arrive. His truck was in the service garage more often than he was able to drive it. After 6 months of this nonsense, he got rid of it and bought a Japanese Subaru instead. It was cheaper and ran like a dream with all the mod-cons that the Colorado didn't even have. Nearly a year on, the Subaru has clocked over 35,000 kilometers without missing a beat.

Tariff is import tax, it is intended to protect the domestic producers (not consumers). When it is imposed on US products by some other countries, the US would say they don't compete fairly. But when the US impose tariff, they ignore free trade principles and cover it with some BS excuses such as overcapacity etc (they did the same but used the term 'dumping' when they were afraid to compete with Japanese cars back then). It is now clear to us that the biggest barrier to shift to cleaner energy is the US government.

it protects buyers as well; Chinese BEVs are total garbage; air bags don't work in real accidents; bad welds; fires, rust in the paint of new cars, poor steel; poor bearings end to end junk; because instead of focusing on quality ;they've focused on price. Check out videos BYD quality or CHinese EV quality BYD fires on youtube - 10 BYD dealerships have burnt to the ground; carriers with BYD cars have caught fire on the way to the dealer. When a country is strong, they advocate free trade. When they are weak, they use tariff and other means to prevent imports. This has been the case in the case of the last two hundred years. The first country to promote free trade was Britain in the early 19th century because the Industrial Revolution started there. The exception to the British free trade policy was the Corn Law, which limited the import of grains. The small British farms could not compete against imports. Japan used all kinds of non-tariff methods to keep out all kinds of imports, from cars, to rice for the same reason. Japan still imports no rice at all. The US was the biggest promoter of free trade in the last 30 years because the US was the strongest industrial power in the 1990s. The US also had the strongest cultural products, from movies to music to McDonalds and NBA. The US also had the best service industries, from FedEX to Wall Street. When the American car companies could not compete against Japanese cars in the 1970s, they negotiated limits to those imports. Eventually the Japanese car companies made huge investments in the US. This car story is repeating, except this time, the US would not accept any Chinese investment.

The irony is that EV's only make up about 6% of the US car market, of that 6% Tesla sells roughly 3% and China is around 1%. EV's just don't sell in the US because of price being too expensive and a lack of electric charging infrastructure. The US car manufacturers can't sell the stock they've already built. The tariffs won't really do a lot to the Chinese car industry, as they don't have much of a market share in America it only really affects the US consumer. It's an election gimmick to look tough on China and appeal to those voters who may be on the fence regarding who to vote for.
@rogerstarkey5390
@rogerstarkey5390 Ай бұрын
The irony is, you misread everything. . "6%"? Chicken, meet egg. If they're built, and better value, the consumer WILL buy. (I'm assuming the consumer buys anything) . "Price too expensive" ? You're still thinking "BMW Like vehicle is more expensive than ... "Toyota"...." . The prices are ALREADY falling (what prompted the latest round of "OMG... EV Depreciation!!!" FUD?) . It's because "EARLY ADOPTERS" pay more, then as VOLUME kicks in, followed by economy of scale, overall prices fall. . Add that inflation/ rates have been high. Compare to the "Car" market, a similar thing is happening. "The US EV manufacturers" (Bar one) are 20 years behind, (they WERE warned) they have been "converting" vehicles with "off the shelf" tech and can't get CLOSE to break even. . The public has (generally) seen through their facade. Let's add that because they CAN'T make a profit, they're "pulling back" to the old tech which they MIGHT make SOME profit on now (but not for long) The bottom has fallen out of THAT Market as well. (Tell me it hasn't?). . There's FAR too much oversupply of ICE vehicles and there's going to be a "Fire sale" just to move stock.... But, prices must come RIGHT DOWN. WHEN that happens, IF there's cash in the system, (doubtful) consumers will want a BARGAIN (if you're smart, try cost + 1% level) That MIGHT shift the current stock. But if you sell let's say 3x the normal amount today, at zero profit, nobody is buying NEW stock in 6 months and the cycle repeats. It's going to get worse before it gets better. . Charging? Pay more attention. . "Election Gimmick" Well, who introduced the first tariffs against Chinese EVs? "Same sh.. different day" (and party)

When I was a young man, I worked for a consultant agency. I was assigned to a GM plant. On the first morning, I took a walk inside the plant, inspecting everything, the production line, the working condition, and so on Right by my side was the plant manager, he was my guide as well as explaining to me what type of things they do in the plant And suddenly, I was someone (a worker) on the floor, snoring, yes, *_snoring_*_ !_ It was a strange sight. As everybody was working, putting parts into cars in the production line, that snoring guy on the production floor was really something As I was about to point it out to the manager, the manager quickly yanked me to the side, and whispered to me, "please say nothing !" I was like, *_wtf ??_* but since he is the boss around there, I kept it to myself, and pretended to not notice that snoring fella on the floor Much later on, after my inspection was done, and we went back to the manager's office, I asked, what happened The manager told me, very seriously, that, they, the administrators of the plants, were very afraid of the workers, because their union *AFL-CIO* was so strong that they could shut down the plant there and then, without giving any prior warning So, the snoring guy I was in the morning, to them, was a common sight ---- just some workers got drunk, or got stoned the night before --- and as long as cars kept on being produced, they wouldn't say nothing But I asked, what if, that particular part that worker should have affixed to the car was not being affixed correctly by others, or worse, wasn't being attached to the car, at all, what will happened to the car ? Wouldn't that be dangerous to the car buyer ? You know what the plant manager did ? He just shrugged, as if, that's not his problem Yes, my friends, that's the quality of the American cars, assembled by American workers, in America

China should just concentrate on the developing economies. Just forget the West. Maybe the emerging economies just want the cheaper and less fancy models

Not only cars but a lot technical based products. China has demystified technology through the prices they charge which is the real threat to the West.

Time to ramble. (This might get convoluted). . Capitalism relies on profit? Profit requires consumption?Consumption requires a population with sufficient wealth? . The problem began with the "good ideas" of Increasing wages of workers in a thriving economy, allowing them to "consume".... (Which is great in an expanding economy) . But that tends to make goods "expensive" (inflation). However, you have sufficient global trade to profit from (capitalist over) other markets, (you're the "big dog!) All is good! . This works (kinda) until you introduce the next "good idea". 🤔 "If we can make our products more cheaply per unit, then sell for the same, or *slightly* lower price at home... We all win!" . So the component supply industry moves "offshore". "Home" Industry benefits (Apart from the component suppliers.... Including the pool of skilled workers!) . The "Supplying country" increases workers wages, makes a profit, THEY are happy. . But "Home" workers see the Home company making more profit and want a cut! Then we get the "Irony" of Unions... (Irony? They grew from the supposedly "Communist" ideals of workers rights, "ownership of the works by the Proliteriat ", etc)... Anyway. Home profits are now slightly eroded, but the workers have more money, and they spent it ... Woohoo! Consumerism for the win!! ... The problem? Which country did you "choose" (attempt to "capitalise" over?) 4-5,000 years "experience". 4-5 times your population. HARD resourceful workers. (Eventually) Higher average IQ than your country (it's actually not even close!) . Oh.... It's a country known for making long term plans and working them through... No "4 years then flip, undo the previous, repeat". No political energy wasted. . Their workers only earned 10% of your "Home" workers. (You laugh about that) . You think it's a bargain! . *THEY formulate a plan* . They educate, improve and eventually innovate on the industry "given" to them (just as ANY country would?) . As they do this, THEIR wages rise, let's say 100%? Their workers are VERY happy, The standard of living goes up by an order of magnitude. BUT, they still only earn ("cost") 20% that of the "Home industry" workers. . THEN a new global philosophy emerges with associated technology. THEY have knowledge, expertise AND A PLAN. "The pupil surpasses the teacher"...... . Meanwhile, "The Teachers" have also become "fat, lazy and complacent". . They have dismissed the progress of the pupil (and incidentally the ONE example of a similar philosophy and plan at home!!) . The system "at home" has now exhausted the benefits of the "cheap supply". Wages are high, *but so are prices* .... And profits are low. . You're "painted into a corner" . Then, the products from the "Cheap" country arrive! They're ... Cheaper (obviously) . They're Profitable. . They're BETTER . "OOPS"? . Your industry (apart from the one company which WARNED YOU!) Can't get close to the price, the quality, the technology.... AND you've lost the skills base to make rapid progress. Add the irony of the Unions (Allegedly bastions of the "Communist" philosophy"?) demanding that you protect jobs from the Communist invasion... While still demanding higher wages. . So.... IMPOSE TARIFFS! . OK... What happens? Well, first you receive reciprocal tariffs... Which are a problem because YOU need components you don't produce and raw materials which you can't supply for any of the new technology you ATTEMPT to make.... Guess who makes the best components AND controls the material supply? . So you try pressuring via components you CAN access and which you think they can't.... But they saw you coming and now have those in-house as well. . Trying to restrict their market? Sorry.... They start organising alternatives, for this technology and others, then start suggesting "alternative financial arrangements" (CoughBRICScough) . Dilemma! . To make things even worse, the "New technology" threatens the "old tech" on which your whole economy is based.... Dilemma² . Then someone says "WE have a "Big Stick!!"...." . A bill is passed to require registration for military service.... Just in case.... 🤔 . To be continued.....

Hell no, Unlike China we like to work out the bugs before we rush a product to market on the cheap to try and get market share, all those batteries burning up in their batteries tells you they didn't work out all the kinks and problems, America however will sell you a quality product with all the research and development and all the kinks and problems worked out, you can buy cheap Chinese products or quality West products, choices.
