Floods have always occurred in our country. But there are some concerns about erratic patterns of weather all over the world.GHG causes rise in air temperature and sea surface temperature. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, and more moisture means more precipitation can occur. This is being observed in some parts of the world. In case of Bangladesh detecting and differentiating changes caused by climate change and changes that would have occured anyways is difficult,

Moreover adaptation takes a long time and should be done at the local level), whereas mitigation is something that needs global effort. And even if Bangladesh manages to adapt to impacts of climate change and also (for arguments sake) becomes 100% renewable, sea-level rise will not stop, salinity will keep on intruding. Moreover, although our government and the people at the individual level should be responsible for taking initiatives (less consumption for example) those who are

Asif, GHGs causing climate change is a matter which cannot be taken care of only at the local level. There are 3 options for any country to take: Adaptation, Mitigation and Geoengineering (Dessler, 2010). For low income countries like ours, we should of course give much preference to adaptation, but that does not necessarily mean we give up mitigation altogether.

What Bangladesh needs is to tackle the the problem of floods with massive publicly and privetly fundeted projects like Dams on rivers , villages being removed to safer areas etc and what ever is needed in order to reduce the dangers to the pupulation and to farms homes and property of the people , unfunturantly that all needs alot of money and perhaps international assistanse

Hold on.. I'm now old. But I was taking classes in college regarding the Indian subcontinent. I remember my dravidian saying Bangladesh as the Largest Poorest country in the world. Flooding, and death, was nearly yearly if not annually, so 4 minutes or so they mention this, and then its additionally worse because of warming. But it seems to jump the warming train and many will be left with that is the main problem.

even more so because of dams that were (and are being) built outside the country and definitely because our country is a Delta. But the problem with the impacts of climate change is that it needs a long time to understand a trend, and we as humans have the tendency to quickly dismiss the idea that climate change is a significant contributing factor for many of visual impacts,or we quickly embrace the idea that this must be because of CC.Thats why we should rely on the work of scientists.

It is not only Bangladeshi position - most scientists in the world (those who publish in pier reviewed journals at least) are of the position that climate change is caused by industries of Western Countries ACCUMULATED over past 100-150 years. Drastically increased fluctuations in weather patterns and increased water levels are product of almost any climate model and it is what is affecting low laying countries, including Bangladesh.

Yes. I get it. Do YOU get MY question? What was the strongest cyclone in Bangladesh's PREHISTORY? And in what way is a cyclone's strength measured? No one can say if there hasn't been a cyclone as strong in the past. Also: You appear not have read my post; you merely reacted to it. Whether or not a cyclone comes ashore, due to Bangaldesh's low elevation they annually experiences flooding.

the main emitters (such as the US) should be held accountable for the impacts that is being caused. I am not saying that we should "beg" for help. It is our right and the right of all CC affected SIDS, and other impacted countries to receive help, since we are not the cause of the impacts. But what usually happens is that the responsibility is pushed from the govt/policy makers of developed countries to those of ldcs..and vice versa. So, in short if Bangladesh acts alone,it wont change much.

There is something called carrying capacity. I am a Bangladeshi, and believe me all the problems that we face in Bangladesh would have been much easier to solve if our population was much much less. WE DONT NEED ANY MORE!!! Remeber Environmental Impact=Population X AffluenceX Energy Consumption

I would be wary about assuming that climate change is the reason that Bangladesh experiences flooding. Look into the history: Flooding has occurred in Bangladesh for thousands of years because the majority of the country lies near sea level at the delta of the Ganges and Bhramaputra rivers.

I have nothing against babies.I did not say anything about what to do about the population problem and what not to do. World population, local population, consumption patterns of the affluent (people and countries) & the problem of distribution of resources are serious problems in the world.I am not saying that we have to following China. There are certain ways to influence population growth to go down. You should look at the Bangladesh scenario where the TFR reduced from about 7.2 to close to 2.

You must do some reading. No one is saying they havent happend before. Scientists have been saying for a very long time that a global rise in temperature would increase the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as drought, cyclone, heat waves. If you look at the trends you'll see that such extremes have increased in numbers and strength although a more long period observation would be better to come to more robust conclusions. Please read IPCC AR4 Technical Summary.

climatchance doesnt only come from thouse who own cars. What I'm talking about is the goverments contribute to reduce the emission from facturys and general industry. EVERYONE must help with facing our new crisis. Not only the vestern countryes. EVERYONE has a responsebility, no matter how poor they are. There are rich ppl. in Bangl. that owns factorys. Rich = cant afford to invest in climate friendly industry? Gov. can force all owners to invest in that, but do they?

Bangladesh needs to BUILD a wall now with the latest technology; this will prevent water from taking lands. Bangladeshi please spread the word other Bangladeshis. We can't waste any time. Bangladesh must spend all its money on this wall. It is about survival. If something like this were happen to Western country, everybody would be talking and living in fear and they would come up with something out of box. BANGLADESH NEEDS A SOLUTION NOW, OUT OF BOX. ACT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

You must understand how trends work and how science is evidence based. The earth has been much warmer before. But the rate at which it is warming now is much more rapid than previous records show. Please read the book Introduction to Modern Climate Change by Andrew E. Dessler. You can find it in Google Books. If you want I can email it to you if you give me your email address.

[con't] Now the west question. I think I said it before. Its the largest poorest country in the world. That same professor dryly made a funny, "in developing(sic) countries, it is said that the only recreation, is procreation." And thats the ugly truth. High birth rate, annual flooding admittadly getting worse, and some of the poorest of the poor. Didn't it use to be east pakistan? Has Pakistan shown any care or concern? I do care, but it seems an almost impossible position.

It's because Bangladesh is 'small and insignificant' to the western countries. Hurricane Katrina had a smaller death toll and not as serious damage to the Bangladeshis and yet Katrina gets more publicity. I feel muslims are being targetted directly from Bush.

It is extremely necessary for you to do some reading, what book are you reading for reference... please hear yourself before you make such claims! Finite planet, finite resources, finite waste absorption capacity.... you do the math! The population is 7billion! Even if growth rates decline there is something called population momentum, which, given the large size of the population base will have/is having a serious impact!

Bangladesh's greenhouse gas emissions are NEGLIGIBLE. It's a predominantly rural country where one in every thousand people owns a car. They don't CONTRIBUTE to climate change, so therefore there's nothing more can they do to COMBAT climate change! And yet THEY are facing the brunt of the complications as a result of the carelessness of first world industrialized nations! In future do your research before making aggravating statements like this that helps ignorance to flourish.
