I do it the old school way. A Radio Shack SPL Meter, a test CD and graph paper. Setting a reference level at 1k and while going through each basic test tone on the cd, i record the levels of each tone on graph paper. This gives me a basic point of reference. Then i set up my peq accordingly using negative peq to correct peaks in my room frequency response relative to my listening position. I have a 50hz hump problem that I've corrected and a few minor peaks in the midrange and 4k. I programmed my eq in the problem ranges where i can make immediate changes if i want depending on the recording. It sounds great and toggling the eq in and out exposes the difference with the correction favored. Im always playing around with eq because the recordings of music are all over the place. You can also use this method for home theater by isolating each speaker pair in a 5.1 or 7.1...its not perfect but this is a down and dirty method that we used to do in the 80's and 90's that works well. It gets you in the ballpark.

One comment on YPAO: Yes, it only has 7 band PEQ which is obviously IIR, but the R.S.C. part of YPAO I suppose to be FIR. You cannot see its effect in the OSD graph though. However, measurments show it does a lot to the signal.

Hey Gene, I got a video suggestion.... Any chance you could do a video discussion/demo show simple mods for speakers... any simple easy hacks most people could do to potentionally improve there speaker or systems sound? For example a mod i've been wanting to try is adding some additional damping to some speaker I like a lot (KEF Q100) that are known to have cheaped out on dampening resulting in a cabinet with resonance. I would really appreciate a video from you or an audioholics employeefriend explaining the do and dont's of such a task like I assume theres certain electronics/components you'd want to avoid putting the dampening material to close to?... I know you can under fill a speaker cabinet, what about over filling one? is the knuckle test the simplest test for cabinet resonance to check if your making improvements/solved the issue, what materials do you use and do you use different materials for different purposes or speaker types? Thanks a lot

in my case, room eq and dsp only tells me to keep tweeking my setup positions to get the least amount of nulls especially around xover...after I get positioning right....eq is turned off. tone controls are then always used.

I just flatten out bass resonances, I do not touch anything above 250hz in my setup. Actually my setup has three different subs, so I must time align them too, or else bass is mushed like crap, I measured difference between subs outputing sound, worst case was like 7ms difference. Thats why you use one model multiple subs.

Hi thank you so much for all your videos which help us with are queries and decisions . I have a question for you which i am finding hard to decide upon. I am using a Stormaudio processor which has 16 channels, i am using them all and my layout is 9.1.6. This is giving me just one for my sub. i want to use 3 or 4 subs so should i add more channels on my processor (with dirac for bass management) from 16 to 20 for which the board is costing me 2600$ or should i buy a mini dsp for the extra channels needed for my subs? Thanking you awaiting your reply!

I look at room eq and the software used to "judge" a room with a microphone like carpet. When you throw a new carpet on the floor you can tell what it's going to look like. But until someone gets down on their knees and trims it, stretches it and tucks it in along the periphery, it's not really "done." These electronics get us started, perhaps, however I personally think that we will always choose to tweak the speakers. Basically all Audioholics are TWEAKERS. TL:DR Sound junkies will always customize everything and take credit for doing it "right" 😃 -✌🏼

I like home theater like anyone else, but besides doing this as your job.. If you have time to crack open rew and go over every little thing, you need to go get another job! Set up your speaker distances and levels, deal with the bass And call it a day. Maybe a few room treatments. The rest, no one will ever hear or notice, so why waste previous time on stuff that you won't even notice? Ignorance is bliss my friends! Great video tho 👍

If you using dedicated subwoofers, should powered towers with subs in them be unplugged when using Audyssey so the in tower subs aren’t being used? Should the towers just be treated as regular speakers! Thank You!

ideally the subs built into the towers should be connected to sub out with the other subs so Audyssey runs them together.

Hello My question is this: if I have dual subs EQ'd with mini dsp and a Marantz receiver with multeq editor app, should I use flat curve or reference curve if I have limit the EQ to 300hz for speakers and turn it off for subs (because are equalized via minidsp)? Thanks!
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 4 жыл бұрын
If you limit Audyssey to 300Hz, it doesn't matter if you choose flat or Audyssey since that mostly has to do with HF rolloff.

Here I come with a wall of text to be the buzzkill contrarian: There is some contradicting research, the idea that speaker flaws can't be "fixed" for better or worse. Sean Olive showed that filling in power response issues on a B&W speaker improved subjective impressions. Technically this is an attempt at "correcting the speaker" as it's not a room issue, and I would of course recommend getting a better speaker in the first place. However, the idea that correction simply need not apply to address said issue is false - it works. The "catch" is the balancing act situation - on-axis gets louder so care must be made to not blare anyone or make sure that they're not on-axis. In addition this power response correction was performed by an auto-EQ that did not have the speaker's anechoic information - this was an automated mic and measure solution which is important to point out. As such the premise that the speaker's listening window itself is more important in mid/high frequencies than the full room response isn't completely true. Sean also found out that solutions that performed full-range correction were rated higher. Higher frequencies need to be treated with care and less aggressive EQ (correcting over multiple octaves rather than notches), but it's still worth it based on the preliminary research. As for IIR vs. FIR, I think it's a bit overblown. Yes, this will be a bit subjective and anecdotal, but it's worth mentioning DIRAC even had a low latency mode that used IIR filters when latency was important (think video games), and for systems where time offset isn't an option they still tend to be sufficient - bouncing between mixed and IIR only did not create much of a difference if any. I ended up doing EQ by hand manually in IIR filters using ReaEQ in a real-time DAW prior to purchasing DIRAC. After I purchased DIRAC I listened in their standard mode and didn't notice a real difference between my DAW EQ - at first I thought it wasn't even working and requested a refund. Prior to it being granted I tried additional troubleshooting and realized it was actually working after forcing an absurd curve on it. Then I tried the standard vs. low latency as people talked about how DIRAC was the only one that got imaging right because of how it handled phase. To me it sounded effectively the same. It's a shame DIRAC isn't sold for PC anymore so others can try it for themselves and see whether they feel the difference is that large in filter methodology. I think the auto-EQ debate can be summed up simply: do you know what the EQ is actually doing? Does it really sound better? If you know what it's doing you likely have an understanding of research and might be able to limit problems getting a really good result. If you don't know but it still sounds better just be happy. If you try it and don't like it if you know how it works try and fix it, but regardless if at the end you don't like the sound dump it as in the end you have to live with it not me. The only universal truth is buy the best speakers first and then EQ as the cherry on-top if you're going to do it. Just my two cents >_>

Today's technology should be able to provide the user with Video EQ room tracking to give one the best response wherever in the room they sit and stand. If there are two or more people in the room , then the track system should split the difference.
