I am so happy I found you last week. I see our Savior in your eyes. I am number 4 in a family of ten children, I promise you I never heard the word poor in our household. We lived with our parents in a one bedroom apartment, in Manhattan, NY. We all made good with the help of hand-me-downs. I was teased by a boy who's sister was my benefactor of her hand me downs. My Dad sometimes worked three jobs to get us all through Catholic grammar and HS. He paid tuition for every one of us. So much to tell, but I won't go on. I'm now 73 and raised 4 of my own. It took an unimaginable amount of hard work and determination for Dolly Parton to lift herself out of poverty & achieve the fame & success that she has. Tons of talent, too. Nothing was handed to her on a silver platter. A friend of mine who grew up near her said that people laughed at her & thought she just had some kind of crazy imagination when she proclaimed that she was going to be a star. It was not an easy road for her, but guess who's laughing now.

Her guitar picking is the same as her banjo picking. Talented and still singing just as well today. Great reaction.

I'm in my 50s (ahem) and I've listened to her since I was 7. I've liked many of her songs over the years but to me, there's always something special when she sings gospel songs (He's Alive, There, Shine and many others). Recently she sang with for King and Country "God Only Knows" which is amazing song, even more so knowing she's in her 70's and still singing.

Dolly is not only a Country Music Legend...she is an extremely charitable person and donates millions to those in need. She runs a reading program for children giving out free books. She is a wonderful person.

Dolly is more of a story teller in many of her songs. This one is relatable to many of us. I wore the hand-me-downs of my cousins. I used to say that I started school in 1968, but some of my clothes started in 1958. Mama would have to alter and repair a few and pieces of them would end up in a quilt. Those old quilts remind me of Mama and those hand-me-downs and the cousins that wore them before me.

I saw her in concert in 1974 and was amazed then at her guitar and banjo playing. She's quite the entertainer.

I well remember when I was between 8 and 10, our home burned to the ground taking all our clothes for winter wear. The first winter after that we didn't have coats. My mother always made our dresses for the girls, but the two boys used hand-me-downs, too. We were happy to get any clothing. And yes, I've been made fun of for my clothes. Yes, we were poor monetarily, but we were rich in the things that really mattered -- each other (there were 5 of us children) and our mom and dad. They both always worked really hard, and taught us God's word! We cried when they died because we missed them, but I know we'll see them again one day. Love her "Coat of Many Colors" and I think she wrote that song! And, yes, sometimes we got pretty hungry, too, but it wasn't because my parents didn't try-they both worked very hard and taught us the value of hard work.

I remember listening to Dolly when I was a kid. I would cry when I heard this song when it talked about the kids making fun of her coat. My mom grew up in the mountains of east Tennessee the oldest of 12 kids so she always loved Dolly. My mom told me stories of how that when her father went to buy flour they would get him to look for the flour sack patterns that matched the ones they already had so they would have enough material to make the girls' dresses. Her summers were spent gardening and canning for the coming winter. The family would pick beans by hand for the Stockley company to make a little money for things they couldn't make themselves. My mom always could take what was to most people thought was trash and make wonderful things from it. She knew how to make do as people used to say.

Dolly and Loretta Lynn both were born and raised in extreme poverty in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee (Dolly) and Kentucky (Loretta). And yep. Sometimes food and most of the time clothing and shoes were scarce. This song she wrote, because it is what she experienced, growing up. If you get a chance, watch her movie The Coat of Many Colors, about a period in her life when she was little girl. Several stars plays in it. and country music singer, Jenifer Nettles, plays her mother. It is really a good movie and shows the spunky spirit that Dolly has always had. My favorite scene was her hiding out in the barn, painting her face with paint, she snuck out of school, so she could look like the pretty women that she had seen in town. Her family left for church, no realizing she was not with them. So she took her guitar and walked to church, went right in the front doors and down the center isle to sing for the congregation. Everyone about passed out, when they saw her. But she held her little head high and just walked right down that isle anyway. She was just a little girl and lived in a culture that respectable women did NOT wear makeup. Her granddaddy was the preacher. lol It was so funny. And she says it was a true event.

I grew up poor. Been poor most of my life and when I was a kid I went to school with holes in my jeans and shoes and shirt. I would get 1 pair of shoes , 1 pair of jeans and a couple of shirts each year to start school and I did not get another pair of shoes until the next year. I was not DIRT POOR ( DIRT POOR came from the term of having a DIRT FLOOR in your house ) but I was poor. I can relate.

I remember picking out which patterns I wanted at the fabric store, so I had the clothes I wanted. You have to be vulnerable to open up on a public platform like this, and Dolly aired all the laundry in a way that is really beautiful. You don't have to have money to make your kids feel loved. You just have to love your kids, they'll get it.

Dolly is from a town about an hour from me. Not long ago it caught on fire and Dolly took care of everyone until they got on their feet. She also sends all the toddlers in Tennessee books up till they are like 4 or 5 if you can't afford them. She has Dollywood for everyone too. We absolutely love her. I remember my daughter went to help the people after the fire. We were broken hearted that happened to her area.

My grandmother grew up dirt poor in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and she had coats like the one described in this song. She never forgot what it was like to go without and she never threw things away if she thought they might be useful at some point. I think of her every time I hear this song. Thank you.

I wish all parents would teach their children not to judge the others children in school for the way they look. We had three kids and at times money was tight. I didn't feel that young kids needed to wear top of the line clothing. When they reached middle school I put more money into their clothes to a point. My daughter had high end taste so I hit the clearance racks first. It took me about two years to realize my oldest son waspicking out the cheapest brands even in shoes. I sat him down and ask him why, was it really what he wanted didn't he want Mike or Levi's. He told me mama I know you don't have alot of money so I just get the cheaper stuff. It broke my heart. Needless to say I took him shopping and bought him as nice as I dressed his sister. To this day he is still the most giving man I know. Just wanted to share. God Bless

Dolly has always been to a hero me. I didn't live as poorly as her but she gave me inspiration that I wouldn't always be where I was as a child. I met her when I was 5 at a Woolworth in Mobile Alabama. A little blonde hair girl in jeans with such a southern accent I'm not sure she understood what I said to her but she was so very kind to me and I just cried when she hugged me. It meant everything to me. I was the 5th child and the 4th girl. As you said, hand me downs were a standard but so were garage sale buys and Good Will. Her songs help lift me and others out of impossible situations. ❤️ Love your story too.

My husband was born in 1946 in the Cumberland Mountains, and lived on a subsistence farm with his Mom, Dad and sixteen brothers and sisters. None of his brothers ever entered the coal mines. Four of them came to Michigan to work for the auto companies. So far as being rich, he and I have a paid off house, a marriage of almost forty years and we are rich beyond compare with our little dog chasing squirrels in the backyard as we watch the birds, grow our garden and flowers and enjoy the kids and grandkids. What WE are doing IS the American Dream and I only wish people knew how absolutely lucky I feel because I've learned that people just don't "need" all the cars, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. That's just marketing. I hope you are as lucky in your future. It's fun to watch your face as you hear these songs because sometimes I know the words and you don't and your expressions are endearing as you learn the meaning of the song.
