Well, I would agree if poverty was only a psychological thing. Poverty is real and there are people who cannot afford food or books/knowledge. Even at that, there are mental states where the patient has absolutely no control over the situation.

It’s really fantastic musicianship, which you don’t see as much of these days. Being able to play single note melodies (vs. just strumming some chords) at album recording quality while also putting in a pristine vocal performance takes lots of practice and talent.

There is much that is fake about Dolly (surgically speaking, which she herself laughs at) but NOT her guitar playing. This lady is one extremely talented musician. A beautiful lady inside and out, she really is very special.

She is very talented but these days she doesn't have to play much but usually plays one or two songs live in open tunings which require only one finger to fret the chords that's how she gets round it these days. It just limits her to pretty much only major chords but that's all she needs on the songs she plays on. I believe she can play some banjo too which is kinda the norm for folks from her generation in the Smokey mountains of Tennessee.
@newfful10 жыл бұрын

Only if you come from that place,do you TRUELY appreciate this song. As I do. I use to watch (as a kid) my grand mother and her sister make "beautiful" quilts of many colors,layers of cotten,material,patches and/or squares and embelishments, for weeks sewing,almost an inch thick when done,and they keep you warm,even with a coal grate fire burning out.

People have always said the same about Johnny Cash which just goes to prove just like rock or pop there is a lot more to country music than people think who tend to stereotype it like it's all sad which it's not. It's just real music about real things that people can relate too.

She often uses open tunings, so she would just barre the fret, though this one looks like G,C, and D in standard tuning capoed up, and she is just carefully fretting one or two notes of the chords, usually the bass notes.
@Nessa09Flutterby4 жыл бұрын
.
@mrjasondylan3 жыл бұрын
@eric kowalski she barred all 6 strings on her fretting hand with one finger flat on the strings instead of fingertips so her nails are not touching guitar except on her right hand but that's a good thing. To do this the guitar is tuned totally different it's tuned open to a chord usually D or E or G .

Normally you think of guitarists with a signature sound its Slash, or Angus Young, etc. Those nails of hers really give her guitar playing a beautiful sound. You can hear the nails picking the strings, a sound a pick(or fingertips) just can't deliver.

I've always wondered, did her parents live long enough to see her become successful? I know that her family grew up with very little means. So, I would bet that if her parents lived to see her success in country music, that she took care of them for the rest of their lives. She's got such a huge heart, and a very giving spirit about her. Can anyone answer my question? And could anyone recommend any good books about her life, preferably something she may have wrote her self. Thank you in advance!

Dolly may be known primarily for her singing, or her outrageous fashion, hair and bosom, but that was some excellent technique on the guitar. How many hours of practice do you suppose that took?
@mrjasondylan3 жыл бұрын
She played since young days. I've played 40 years now since I was 10 and have taught many beginners over the years it's very time consuming but your prepared to put in about 3 hours a day say 4-5 days a week you could learn this song a basic version in a couple of months. It's getting the coordination and rhythm down that takes time it looks easier than it is. But I had an 11 yr old absolute beginner young girl playing Knockin on heavens door in about 3 weeks.

Two tell-tales she is a real guitarist: - 1. She has a capo. 2. She looks down occasionally at her fretting hand. One thing that makes me wonder; - 1. Those nails. Re. 1. Just kidding; the wigs and nails were not a fail, they were a deliberate choice and served her well.
