Priceless interview. I couldn’t get enough of Under Lock And Key as a teenager....wore that tape out!! About 10 years ago I got to guitar tech for George and I told him, “George, through my high school years I played my Under Lock and Key tape relentlessly” - he’s says, what’d you that for? George really is a sweetheart of a guy and I don’t judge him for being aggressive and going for what he wanted in life. It was his attitude and aggressiveness that got him to where he is. His guitar tone is in his soul and through his hands. #1 George Lynch #2 Steve Vai #3 Malmsteen #4 Gary Moore #5 Eddie Van Halen If aliens came to Earth and demanded we send our best guitarist against theirs for a guitar battle in order to save our planet...I would sleep comfortably knowing George would win.

I love Don's no nonsense tell it like it is/was demeanor. I also remember reading an old interview with Scott WINO where there were some problems concerning borrowed gear, I can't recall details exactly and the interview is nearly impossible to find now, but Don had borrowed gear from Saint Vitus and it wasn't returned or something. Then Don produces the next Vitus record C.O.D. sans WINO, which gave us the criminally underrated Lunar Womb recording from The Obsessed on Hellhound records

Dokken and Ratt were my two favorite bands from the LA scene in the 80's. Ratt was my favorite out of the two in the 80's and most of the 90's. Sometime in the late 90's Dokken became my favorite out of the two and all theses years later still are. I do also think that Up From The Ashes would have been way bigger if it was a Dokken album instead of a solo album. It is still one of my all time favorite albums. It is a MASTERPIECE in my eyes. Great interview!!

I have a newfound respect for Don Dokken. I had no idea he was a guitar player, or that he wrote the bulk of the music and all of the lyrics to Dokken's songs. Amazing, how much of this was purposefully kept in the dark, from the record buying public, and only decades later, comes to light, due to the information accessibility of the web.

Dokken was an A league band, shocking when they broke up. i remember being crushed as a kid when I heard that, but wht Don says make sense about why they parted ways, and it is a shame he could not use his name.

Excellent interview. Always felt they never fully got their due. Agree with Don about wanting to sing his own lyrics. I never liked it when the guys in my band would try to do my job for me.

I wrote all the songs for my hard rock/metal band in the 80s called Iron Cross up to a certain point where we all were clicking together and had a more prominent "image" of what we wanted to do. The first big change was when my bass player brought in an unfinished lyric and bass line that turned into an amazing song called "Who's the victim?". I wrote the last verse and some guitar riffs for it, my rhythm guitarist wrote some stuff to compliment mine and our drummer fell right in. It was really a different experience for all of us and we enjoyed it tremendously. It started a chain reaction to evolving the sound and feel of our music and we all were on board with it. I don't know why Don had such an ego to not want to sing other people's lyricas if they were good. I was the lead singer and lead guitarist in a 4 piece band and George Lynch was a big inflence as well as RATT. It was the late 80s/early 90s and it was a great time for music

Scorpions were impossible to beat live. But I witnessed Tesla do it at the same show in 2004. Never got to see any Dokken line up live unfortunately. WASP was a killer live act even well after the golden years. Dio. Whitesnake. Stryper was excellent live. Seen Priest Anthrax. Didn't see Iron Maiden. Seen quite a few excellent bands after the fact bc I was born in 82. Hell I'm having a hard time remembering who all I have seen. Saw Queensryche. That was cool. I wanna say it was Operation Mindcrime 2 tour. Or some shit like that.

Was at the Monsters of Rock show, LA Coliseum, to see Dokken & Scorps - who won the night, with Dokken a close second

I've always had the debate with myself of who was more at fault with the ego of the band, Don or George. I saw them at a club gig in Florida in 1995 and from what I remember, during Mr. Scary, Don stood at the side and leaned against the amps with a look of "here we go again". Over time, I've really wondered if it was George who really had the issues with everything. I love how Don seems to be really honest about everything that went on in the band. Bottom line is it doesn't really matter how great of music a band produces, sometimes the players just cannot work together for a long period of time.

Dokken was a notch above many of the bands back then. There was substance to the songs, Don sang open-throated high notes, similar to Brad Delp of Boston, more than Heavy Metal Bands. George Lynch used interesting chord shapes and jazz techniques in his approach to soloing, which gave his solos a sometime exotic sound, but always melodic too. Great backup vocals, like the great 70s bands. Add that melodic approach with the harder sound of the 80s, and it's great. Like if Boston was an 80s band.

I saw them open for a few bands. Priest, Dio. I think maybe there was another one or two. But they always sounded great. Don's voice was completely different then. I don't really ever see a decent quality live video from back then. It was completely different than it is today. It's difficult to accept that things change as people get older. Especially vocalists. The other thing is that I think George always wanted more of a distorted vocal sound like Dio or Halford. That was never Don's style. He wasn't a screamer. He was more of a smooth high register singer. Like Meine. That's why it makes sense for him to have done those backing vocals. It's the same style. And Dokken kind of started out in Germany in a way.

I guess band members constantly fighting does work.. in Dokken's case. Multiple sources are confirming the fights between George on Don was usually because of George. Hard to picture soft-spoken George being a whinny PIA.

Great interview.. It is great to hear Dokken put a lot of the crap that Lynch has said over the years to rest. For years, people always assumed that it was Dokken that was creating the issues in that band. But nowadays, the more people talk (producers...peers...Don..etc), it is becoming clear that Lynch was the trouble maker in that group.

Never heard Don talk mean shit about George but the other way around i heard a lot.

I remember in the late 80s in LA seeing a Fiero with 'Dokken' on the plate. I think it was the Don. Also, previously back home in NY, I remember going to the "monsters" tour in Buffalo excited to see Dokken but then felt like their performance was lacking. Now, after hearing these interviews, I realize it was all the friction between George and Don. You have to wonder if it is worth it to try to make such conflicting personalities work?

In the late 2000's (07' or 08') I remember being on way to play a softball game in West L.A. and I went to the grocery store (Von's) to grab some beer and I remember being in line with a dude that looked A LOT like Don Dokken and I was looking at him (thinking to myself is that Don Dokken?) and he looked at me (while I'm looking at him) then kinda smirked and nodded.....and I smiled. I'm still not sure if that was Don Dokken, but I'm almost certain it was.

Saw Dokken at their first show since the pandemic last month. Considering Don’s health issues, the dude can still rock at 68. Obviously can’t hit the high notes anymore, but for his age he can still sing.

I never did like Breaking The Chains. I thought it was a terrible album. The two albums after that I thought were great, and then I wasn't into that type pf metal anymore. Nice interiew. Don's voice is hard to listen, though. It's all that cigarette smoking. I'm wondering if he can still sing.
