Wow. Beautiful guitar work. And the vocal - just imagine if this was the first time you'd heard this song. You'd be blown away. Its only secondary because Chris Isaak's voice is so divine nothing can top it. Such an amazing song. I really enjoyed this one a LOT, thanks Fil. 😊

I was living in rural South West France when a friend visited her mother near where I lived resulting in us meeting, she gave me a copy of Tenacious D and I was blown away by the comic and technical capabilities of these two. A muso friend and bassist visited me just after and had never heard it and was amazed he found it in the Midi Pyrénées

Jack Black has been my favourite singer for a long time now. Name one singer that can "skibidi mm fugudabada debbe di ski da" like he can. And Kyle is a massively underrated guitarist IMO, his licks are effing tasty.

Jack is fascinating to listen to as a singer myself, because he does things that are "vocally correct" with technique but he exaggerates everything and makes what he's doing very obvious. And that exaggerated nature is just Jack's whole thing so it fits as well as is technique wise, spot on. He's the man

@@snerdterguson Tenacious D "crass"? I beg to differ! The last time I talked with Jack and Kyle, the subject of rubbing ××××××× on the ×××× of your ×××× so that it takes longer to ××× when you ×××× ××× accounted for maybe 5% of our conversation at most! (BTW, Fil, they also revealed to me their secret five-step plan for guaranteed success that all new acts need to know, so if you'd like a recording of that to play on your show, I'd be glad to share it with you!)

He has really good pitch, you can really tell from the pitch analyzing software that he hits the important notes really spot on. With his vibrato and often trailing phraseology he'll use a glissando to end or begin phrases but the tone-center is "on the line". Damn I really hate discussing vocal pitch being on the line, we've gotten to used to it.. it's vibrating around the right pitch.. ..better ;D

Hi Fil, The entertainments of Comedy and Music often intertwine. Just a few examples off the top of my head: Sonny & Cher The Monkees The Brady Bunch (The "Silver Platters" episode) The Smothers Brothers The Partridge Family Arlo Guthrie Steve Martin The Blues Brothers & Tiny Tim Thats enough for now...Rock On! 😎 Some more came to mind: Hee Haw (Roy Clark & Buck Owens) Dr. Demento Steve Dahl (Chicago radio personality and Master of Parody songs "Weird" Al Yankovic Bernadette Peters & Johnny Ray (I don't know if the comedy was intentional with these two (2,) but I remember, as a child, busting a gut whenever either of these folks came on television to sing. They ALWAYS ended EVERY song with tears streaming down their faces. 😭 On Roger McGuinn's (The Byrds) album, "Live from Mars," he tells many tales from his long career in the music business. He begins by discussing how his love of music began: as a child, he would ride his bicycle around Chicagoland while listening to The Beatles on his portable transistor radio. He then talks about one of the first music gigs he landed, while still a teenager: "Playing with The Chad Mitchell Trio, while making funny faces for the audience!" 🤪

Hi Fil, That is some clean playing by Kyle on the intro to this song. And the attention and detail in how he chooses the notes is just beautiful. You can tell right away his skill set is amazing. Jack’s vocals are very unique and give it an interesting interpretation and feel. I believe they call the nasal singing as singing in the mask. These guys did a great job on this song. Love the guitar techniques Kyle used and Jack’s voice has a raw emotion that is perfect for this performance. And I agree, this is what I consider a live performance! Excellent video, you've done an amazing job as always! I love JB & KG, and I've been a fan of their music since the early days, but that being said... I can't quite shake the feeling that something has been done to the pitch of that high note in their *studio* recording of this cover - the way its "snaps" into place sounds quite artificial to my ear (but maybe I'm just severely underestimating Jack's vocal prowess). I'd be curious to hear your thoughts!

You certainly have me appreciating the talents involved even more. I wish all high schools would offer courses like this. When I was in high school in (cough) 1975, I remember a schoolmate running into class to tell us about a British band that had just put out a amazing song that sounded like an opera. This was in rural Georgia, too. His excitement got me to listening to all kinds of music more and kindled a love of great work. Thanks for pointing out songs out like my friend did in school. Certainly wouldn't have the same level of fame, but Tenacious D was part of him becoming famous. He was in Cable Guy, but wasn't a know guy yet. Had mostly done one offs on tv shows. Was in the god awful third Never Ending Story, but had yet to become an actual star. And I may be mistaken, but I believe his biggest jobs in his early days were from him being discovered while playing with Tenacious D. I know that's how he got the Mr. Show appearances which led to the Tenacious D shorts on HBO. Now seeing him with his own thing on HBO, singing and being funny as hell, he gets the job on High Fidelity, which was really his star turn. So while his fame has certainly helped Tenacious D, without Tenacious D, he very well may not have become famous at all.
