Matt, I do appreciate your efforts to keep the trails open. I don't know if there is that many people that watch your videos or the other "overlanding" KZfaqrs that would actually do this types of things. At least, I'm hoping. My intuition tells me that "these" people probably don't watch these videos, they never heard of trail etiquette / leave no trace, or more than likely just don't care. Unfortunately in 30+ years in law enforcement I've learned there is a LOT of knuckleheads. Anyway, I really do appreciate your efforts and I'm really hoping that your efforts make a difference. Stay safe on the trail.

That is exactly why Moab closed over 300 miles of trail, is peoples absolute abuse. I heard that the worst offenders were the SBS and the Quad folks. Cutting new trails and leaving trash, speeding and not being very trail sharing friendly. I know here in Arizona! Some Out of state folks don’t register their SBS that they leave here over the summer in Arizona or at least buy a state use pass to use the off road trails when they are here in the winter months. That income for the state helps to keep our trails open. I live here and pay every year, so I can ride off road trails on my Dirt bike, I also own a Jeep. I stay to the trails. Upsetting to see a trail getting cut in by little fat tire tracks just because they seen it was shorter to cut across the field and not around it on the trail. Great video as always Matt.

Im new to overlanding, and currently building out my bronco sport to hopefully handle slightly tougher trails, however its always good to hear this kind of information. It may seem like common sense, but for those who really never did this before, it helps to learn about it and try to keep it in mind when we finally get out there. I think alot of ppl just think of mudding, and bonfires and not really taking care of the trails and enjoying the journey

I hate that videos like this HAVE to be made instead of GET to be made. Meaning, I’m a complete newbie, when you came to that extended mud hole, I wouldn’t have known the difference. Having someone point out stuff like the rock bottomed section is invaluable. Sucks that the reality is you have those who are mean and rude when someone like me or someone new to an area has a legit question. Appreciate you brother!

Thank you for your video. I do hope that people who are "that guy/girl" listen to you and do better. My family goes camping 3-4 times a year and I can't tell you how many times we've come across a campsite that had garbage in the fire pit or in other areas of the campsite. Used toilet paper lying around. Worse yet, we come across a smoldering fire. Just because it looks out, may not be out all the way. The ground could be smoldering underneath and all it would take is a pop of an ember and a little wind to start a forrest fire. Much love from Robin from Idaho.

As someone just starting on this way to explore the outdoors, im glad to see someone made this video. There are a lot of overlanding youtube channels and this had to be said. If we destroy the landscape and the ecosystems, the government will protect them by shutting down access. Protect what you love and remember we all share this land.

Great video as always and great job covering a much needed discussion. I create and share routes in Georgia and surrounding states. Shortly after the release of my first route, I was tagged and watched a video (with the name of my route in the title) of people doing almost the exact thing. Riding off trail and climbing a beautiful waterfall that was clearly for looks not for riding. I was devastated and almost pulled my route because of it. I realized not everyone is like that and being a teacher myself, its up to us to educated the young AND THE OLD to Thread Lightly, Be Mindful, Be Respectful, and use Good Judgement. Some learn better than others and I still think the "Overlanding" community takes pride at taking care of things but there are some that just need to hear and learn. Thank You for taking the time to make this video and for all you do for Our Hobby!

Over the years we always do our best to leave the campsites and trails cleaner than we find them . Anyone who treasures God's beautiful creation would do so . For many years I've off-roaded using paper maps and had never even heard of the MVUM , until I started watching your channel a few years ago . Not only are your videos entertaining , they are very educational and much appreciated . Now , when planning an adventure , I always check the route to confirm it is a legal road . The majority of our trips are in the Ouachita National Forest , but we are really looking forward to spending time in the Ozarks . Keep up the good work .

I was that guy a few times before I knew better. Preaching it to new jeep or 4wd owners will definitely be beneficial! I am leading a small group to a nice trail in North Carolina by me this weekend to do this very thing. Educate and teach to be responsible for keeping the trail clean! Keep up the information! It may make a small difference.. but if you can teach / inform one person you are making a difference! 🙌

Thank you for attempting to educate people. Here in Florida our driving trails are limited more and more, it seems like every year. Free camp spots, too. People just don't respect the forest and natural areas. How hard is it to stay on a trail, not cut down trees, and take your trash with you? It's not. Our fines are roughly $1000 per tire for water. We have no legal water access/crossings by vehicle. Even if the lake is currently bone dry, Forestry/FWC still count it as a water body all the way up to the edge where the water line use to be. We also can't just pull over and camp. It has to be a designated/pre used campsite. No boon docking or "car camping" which includes rooftop tents. Some people do get lucky and have no run ins with authorities, however me and my family have never been so lucky. Haha. Hunting season also really limits our camp spot options. We are the people who leave spots with way more trash than what we brought. Also, we have a buddy that gets a group together with trucks every year to go clean up our woods from illegal dumpers and lazy/dumb people. He even pays the dump fees to properly dispose of it all. Now that my truck is running and road worthy, I hope to get in on the next clean-up project.

I appreciate your messaging as people who don’t think things through are the ones that tend to goof it up for all of us. Not just an over landing are used to fish a ton catch and release pick up fishing line and other garbage that people would leave to try to keep our lakes cleaner in the fish environment safe so I understand where you’re coming from. Also find it interesting with a ground tent to rooftop tent comparison like you say it’s personal preference. The one thing I will add to that is if you don’t like to break down camp every day if you’re going to return to it1010 to be a better option

Matt - myself and a buddy are going to be in the Ozarks the end of June with our fathers. We like to plan routes around water crossing with potential good fishing. How is the fishing in these rivers, do you know? We will only be catch and release -- so not necessarily after whoppers, just wanting to have fun!

When I was a kid my parents had three major rules. Never ever walk through someone else’s campsite! After dark talking just loud enough to be heard! Last but not least we spent 10 minutes after the tent (and later the pop up) was moved out of the campsite picking up all the thrash in our spot! My dad preached, and Matt feel free to be preachy on this its God’s world and we should respect what He freely gave to us!!!

Long time sub. I want to be clear! Absolutely, love your channel! Editing, content, dialogue, educating, humor is amazing. I've said this in the past, yes some of the time you come across "preachy". Love your passion about the outdoors. However, case in point, on a previous episode you made the same mistake about going off trail. Took pictures at the waterfall. It just would've been refreshing to hear you've made the same mistake.

Hey Matt 👋🏻 awesome video topic, that looks to be 5 fingers falls and if so I believe we have only be there one time and had came in the reverse way that you are going in this video, we had seen SXSs going across the top of the waterfall and when we had stopped the to asked why they was going that way we was told it was sxs trails that led to Beaver Slide? Not completely sure if that is true or if you may can shed some light to that or not, but over all fully agree that that is an awesome trail and more challenging in the rain 😂 and yes DONT BE THAT PERSON (This needs to be a sticker 😊 and or patch)

This is Murray Creek Falls, not 6 Finger Falls. Different area. But there's not a SxS trail on the back side of 6 Fingers either. That's a hiking trail.

100% agree with staying on trails, there is no excuse. But after using GAIA for a bit I have gotten used to it not being completely accurate. Trails on the map that actually don't exist, or no trails showing where there actually is one. So it really comes down to a subjective decision based on visual clues if a trail actually exists there or not.

My Facebook group had a camping trip at LBL and we told everyone that you can't camp there on Friday night because we only reserved one night which was Saturday. I came into camp on Saturday morning to find more than 20 groups there camping. I was shocked honestly. We even gave alternatives 100 yards away and they were ignored. I found people camping on the beach which is against the rules for that area. The ranger came in and scolded the entire group because of these guys. They could have ticketed everyone that was there Friday night but they didn't. Also, social media posts about how poor a job the rangers do at keeping the trails maintained was noted by the park staff. It was our group. They were kind enough to not kick us out. Thank you to the LBL people who make that place what it is. DON'T BE THAT GUY!

Tread Lightly is a great program for everyone to take and support. Also note Slow as Possible, Fast as Necessary. Especially on hills and all Water Crossings! Keep the trails and waters in as good condition as possible.

I agree about not driving off trail, but almost all maps are subscriptions, and not everyone can afford them. Many use Google, and yes, Google shows some trails, even ones that are closed and private, but Google does not tell you that information.

I think a few of the issues you brought up in this video could be helped with a couple nice signs in place. Maybe one saying do not cross over the waterfall and another pointing to the proper bypass mudhole. I think I remember you saying you knew a few of the forest service folk, maybe its something you could work with them on. edit: Great video as always too!

Being relatively new to the jeep / adventure community it concerns me that beautiful sights I could see will be taken away by other careless people. I’ve been in places where there’s multiple obvious legit used road/trails with a gate that is wide open for use. Not on the maps. Also places where there should be a road/trail that shows on the map, but there isn’t one there in real life. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The next generation always needs to be taught this. “Aways leave it cleaner than you found it” was what was taught to me. Now we must teach it to others. Nobody wants to clean up after you. And, yes, the privilege can be taken away. The trails can be closed.

G'Day Matt, What an absolute belter of a topic Matt, here in Australia we have the same problem with irresponsible people making their own way through government state floristry and not sticking to the main trails on the maps. So many lovely areas are getting closed because of small groups of people leaving garbage and ripping up camping areas with their modified vehicles. If you get caught doing anything like this here in Australia, the police can confiscate and inbound your vehicle for a long time. Keep up the fantastic work mate i love watching your channel and seeing your grate jeep setup👍👍👍 You really live in a lovely part of the world.

Great job on the camera work. The first scene were you get out of sully and start talking, when you go to get back in I notice the different camera shot but made to look like one shot. Great video. You’re not preaching, you’re stating facts and legitimate concerns. Unfortunately, a lot of people these days come across as they spent a lot of money on their “toys”, and therefore are “entitled” to use their toys however they see fit. Of course this is with no regard to the Tread Lightly principles, and without any regard to laws because “who’s going to stop me out here” mentality. As I said in the beginning, you’re not preaching. So keep on talking about it, because if you/we don’t, we’re going to lose the access because of “That Guy/Girl”.

Not sure which one he has, but their typically referred to as pocket torches, and most run on Butane. I have used one from a company called Soto with great success.

Love your water crossings! I don’t think I’ve seen any other KZfaqr go through deeper water crossings than you. You also do way tougher trails than other people. Unfortunately, all the KZfaqrs that have gotten real popular started taking the easy dirt roads. Great video!

Don’t ever be afraid to educate. Sadly as popularity of places grow so does the uneducation. Not all purposely of course, people just getting into it have never known the aids are even there or how to get them. It’s a live and learn process and not everyone has someone who’s helped show them the ropes. That I can understand, however the trash I can not. And it gets blamed from crowd to crowd but it falls to nothing less than the individuals responsibility. We have nothing here as far as public access trails other than 50” maximum width for atv’s and very few UTV’s at that width. The trash left at certain gathering spots or stops is insane. We’re currently working with our forest service to see about getting some trash cans to put in some of the high traffic stops. But they worry about those being stolen or destroyed which sadly is a possibility. I just don’t get it….beautiful spots that their children will never see it as they once did but they don’t care. Keep the education up, it’s a responsibility of us all. Love y’all and your videos 👍👍

Matt totally understand your concerns. I live in the heart of Wisconsin snowmobiling and see trails closed every year because "that guy". It only takes one idiot to ruin thing for everyone.

the 2 things that makes me angry are off trail drivers and the amount of silver bullets along the trails. its infuriating. mostly SxS and locals dumping. my trail bag is always full at the end of the day. and all i eat are donuts and home made sandwiches

There’s nothing wrong with re-enforcing a vital message. Unfortunately, most of the time you are preaching to the choir. The people that go off trail don’t care about staying on trail. But don’t stop preaching because some things have to be said.

People say the same thing with driving a car they think it's a right not a privilege wich is completely wrong!! You have to have a driver's license to drive a car!!!! And if you get a DUI or do stupid stuff that adds up to many points on your license you loose your license there for it is a privilege not a right!!

Like your videos and all Your info. But I’ll call You out as you say in your video. How about wearing your seatbelt!! Safety is #1. I know you get in and out of Jeep a lot for your cameras etc. Since you have a big fan base it would be nice of you to model safety first.

This is a poignant topic for me. The "That Guy" issue is a very real problem. The spots you used are also great examples. Those that care, can be educated. It’s the "I don't care group" that confounds me. How can you get through to someone like that? I've also seen a KZfaqr who will guide groups in the ONF take them on closed roads. You can actually see them on Gaia’s public tracks! Maybe we should all be more active on the calling out/educating aspect of this issue.

I know others that lead people on closed trails too and he doesn't care. Not aware of any youtubers that do that other than ATV people. I can't look at Gaia public tracks without getting irritated. lol

If we keep playing defense with trail closures our kids will never have the opportunity to drive a 4wd out side of a park. Someome needs to make an offensive play towards trail closures. And why the only thing it succeeds in; is making innocent people criminals.someone has to show proof that a couple of tracks in the woods, with some ruts. Does not effect the wilderness in any amount.

Be thankful that you have BLM area's to go enjoy yourself and treat the land as you would if it were your own. We have less than 12 thousand acres of BLM land in Texas and Texas is about 172 MILLION acres in size. You would think we would have a LOT more, but nope. 😒

Well, The government doesn't really own anything. It all comes from taxpayer dollars. We own the capitols, all the buildings and parks, our tax dollars pay for it, therefore we actually own it all. That's not to say we should abuse it, but please please please don't take the stance that the government owns it all.
