I am not an artist and I use my iPad for educational and entertainment purposes only. I’ve used the Logitech crayon for months before I got the first generation Apple Pencil, and I can say that the difference is very noticeable. The Apple Pencil feels better in the hand and, for me, it encourages better handwriting. The tap on the screen is quieter, as well. I really enjoy the pressure sensitivity when using different pen types on my note taking app, which I only learned were different from one another when using the Apple Pencil, the Logitech crayon makes them all write the same. The Logitech crayon is the safer choice but the Apple Pencil is the better choice. (I have the 2019 iPad Air and I use Goodnotes 5)

Lack of pressure sensitivity is a deal breaker for me. It’s unfortunate that such a pricey product doesn’t have this feature. For someone who just wants to take notes or do basic doodles, I guess it would be fine. But for anyone who does serious art, this is an expensive desk decoration. For the price, I would have honestly expected pressure sensitivity as one of the most basic features.

my logitech crayon review. if you’re buying for art purposes, you’ll probably be fine. there’s no pressure sensitivity but i’ve learnt to get used to it and it’s honestly really nice to work with. if you’re heavily involved in art, the apple pencil may be your best bet, but the logitech is great too if you’re on a budget. if you’re buying for work purposes / other, then definitely go for this one. it works very well and is nicely fit in hands. it doesn’t have many shortcuts like the apple pencil as well. while the only real con would be no pressure sensitivity, and no shortcuts, it’s a really good buy to save a bunch of money.

The way the crayon 'connects' to a device is it's an active stylus meaning when you power it on that electricity goes to a coil nearly at the tip of the pencil Wich then connects to a tip and so on. Hope this helped to clear up some questions

in my opinion, not worth for the 2018 pro iPad. You already paid at least 750+ Euro, quickly reaching over 1000€ (256gb, or even 12,9") + more maybe for cases/covers, bags, etc. But those downsides just to save the 70 last bucks? - no pressure sensetivity - no double tap feature - NO Possibility to charge it when you're on the go. (while pencil 2 charges the best way possible + is quite securely stored when carrying it around) - on Lightning iPads you need an adapter. You could have a better experience buying the last Gen iPad Pro + pencil 1. gen, than iPad Pro 2018 + crayon I think, people who buy the iPad 2018 32gb, to keep the cost minimal (for school/study), this is fine. But still, pressure sensetivity + better charging on the go for 89€ instead 59€.. it's worth it. Unless you really don't care about pressure sensetivity for writing. Crayon should cost 39€, that would be a very decent prices for the downsides + make it very appealing for education and students. But your last argument is really something. If you have multiple iPads (one beeing iPad Pro 2018), spending 60€ for the crayon, instead buying the apple pencil 1 AND 2, is really valid :)
@paperlessmovement
@paperlessmovement 5 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate that you took the time to write such a detailed comment with the point that is all valid! An Apple Pencil 2 is nearly double the price. @@Syphus323 But if you're just taking notes I honestly think both of these pens are too expensive. For art, pressure sensitivity is a pretty big deal. For taking notes, I think the $70 is still a lot of money to pay for a stylus and I'd rather just pay $100 for a 1st gen Apple pencil. If you can find the Logitech for $50 or less, I can see that being a worthwhile investment if you don't care about making digital art.

I have to agree with a lot of the negative responses.. I bought the 11”pro not too long ago to replace a paper notes and sketch stuff for projects.. and swallowed the price for the Apple Pencil 2 thinking it was nothing special. And I wouldn’t give it up for anything, it’s superior to the 3rd party offerings. Not only because they simply can’t do most of what the apple one can You fail to show the fundamental reason why the apple pen 2 wouldn’t be better with current gen IPad Pro in functionally... the crayon isn’t as good because it doesn’t have most of the features that made the apple one so Great.. I have literally never had the “double tap” happen randomly.. The pressure sensitivity is completely missing on the crayon. Connection between the iPad Pro and apple pen 2 is near flawless with “passive” BT connection and the magnetic charging on the iPad. I have no problem saying that it’s an expensive investment.. but it’s been worth it in my experience.

I have an iPad 8th Gen and an Apple Pencil 1st Gen and there is a widget which is easily installed on the Home Screen which gives you the charging status for the iPad’s internal battery and also that of the Apple Pencil. This widget loses connection to the Apple Pencil however which I think means that when the Apple Pencil is not in use, it goes to sleep and therefore does not show on the widget. It easily wakes up when you touch it to the Home Screen. I can charge the pencil either via the adapter to the lightning cable or the bottom port on the iPad for its own charging. I prefer t use the cable as the connection to the iPad charging port isn’t strong enough to hold it against gravity. The pencil is sturdy but who knows how many times it drops that you can continue to use it. I do not have a Logitech Crayon so if the charging widget on the home page would work with it, have no idea. A nice thing I have found with the Apple Pencil and am sure this would also work with the Crayon, is to use it with a plastic ruler to mark up charts in Acrobat .pdf app. This creates a moveable highlight is you are keeping track of progress while following a chart. Though I am an artist, I do enjoy the touch sensitivity though I do not use it that often. But if something is only different by $30, and then it is a genuine Apple product, it isn’t that hard to want a pencil which will fit in the case you get to hold the iPad and give it a laptop-like keyboard with trackpad. This feature of keeping the pencil on the side of the case, made my decision over a bulkier pencil which is what the Logitech Crayon is.
@jdmorgan01
@jdmorgan01 5 жыл бұрын
I know that someone had mentioned that Logitech is an official partner, but the Crayon was developed in partnership with Apple. It is essentially a stripped down Apple Pencil that uses a proprietary connection system that was designed for the classroom. Pencils don’t need to be paired with individual devices, they just work with whichever iPad they’re closest too. They were introduced at the Apple Event at the school in Chicago, I believe and were originally only available for educational purchase. So the reason that it blows away all of the other third party styluses is because it is an Apple Pencil, it’s just missing some of the fancier features like pressure sensitivity.

I agree, if all you are looking for is a “dumb” pencil to scratch around in a notepad app you can get a dumb pencil as cheap as $10. But like all the “just as good as Apple but cheaper” type videos the things you lose with the cheaper option is either glazed over or completely omitted. There is cheap and there is good but not often do you find both in the same product.

Magnetic charging and pressure sensitivity are super important to me, but another favorite feature of the Apple Pencil 2 is that you can double tap the pencil itself with your finger to quickly switch between Brush and Eraser in Procreate. Does the Crayon have that touch feature?

For information ... other alternatives WITH pressure-sensitivity AND bluetooth: "Adonit Pixel", "Adonit Pixel Pro", "Wacom Bamboo Fineline 3", and "Wacom Bamboo Sketch" ... in europe their price start at 50 euro. Unfortunately they don't seem to support angled-thicker-drawing, and unfortunately they also uses bluetooth.

The Crayon - except for its price which it is about $50 cheaper - has only disadvantages compared to apple pencil. Cable charging, awkward shape, NO PRESSURE SENSITIVITY, no double tap, no magnets, etc. Do not recommend a product that doesn't worth it.
@paperlessmovement
@paperlessmovement 5 жыл бұрын
If you compare the price and product Crayon to other thrid party products available from Wacom or Adonit that cost even the same price as the Apple Pencil it self, I think it is worth recommending if someone is looking for a cheaper alternative that works on all the iPads (which the Apple Pencil does not).

The only problem with this is that Apple could decide at any moment or update to ban or take away the ability to use any other pen devices but theirs in the software. It’s pretty lame but it’s a smart business move to basically FORCE animators and illustrators to buy a $129 (before tax) Apple Pencil
@joelbechtolt
@joelbechtolt Жыл бұрын
Apple is partners with Logitech and they licensed Apple Pencil technology to Logitech so it requires no pairing and besides pressure sensitivity and the tap function it works as if it were an Apple Pencil. They sell the Crayon in Apple Stores and on the Apple website and will not be making updates to ban the Crayon.

You’ll need pressure sensitivity. Maybe for note taking not so much, but for drawing you definitely need it. I switched off the double tap, so I agree that is one thing we can live without. I still think the Spen from Samsung is better. Shame Android is so clunky compared to iOS

Problem is a lot of us non-artists don’t need pressure sensitivity just accuracy to write with. The crayon is $90 here in canada and the Apple Pencil is $130 or refurbished for $105. So what the hell is the point of giving up pressure for $15 savings...woohoo. This crayon needs to cost $30. Is there any alternative that is accurate enough to write but not pressure sensitive?

the "magic" it uses to connect without pairing is that it is simply a powered capacitive stylus which is also why it doesn't have pressure sensitivity or tilt angle detection. it uses "apple tech" as in the powered tip, not smart parts that detect all the advanced things and communicate those back to the ipad.
@DanielHarrisCodes

Joshua Jarman Does that mean the crayon works with all iPads, even those without Apple Pencil 1/2 support?
@joshuacooks
@joshuacooks 5 жыл бұрын
@@DanielHarrisCodes in theory yes. in practice no. from what i've read, to save battery it uses that same circuit to only power the tip when it detects a "supported device". The official compatibility list is: iPad (6th gen), iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad mini (5th gen), and iPad Pro (3rd gen)
@joshuacooks
@joshuacooks 5 жыл бұрын
there are powered capacitive stylus available for most devices from third parties. (some even have tilt and pressure support via BT, look up reviews first for the specific combo you are interested in, results are mixed for art level work, usually fine for notes etc.)

8:38 there's no technology behind it Tom, it's only the iPad Pro doesn't accept any other entries from any other pencil once there's an actively connected Apple Pencil to the device and once disconnected, you then can use another dozen of compatible pens like Logitech or any other brand in the same time which is what I'm currently doing, I have 2 compatible pencils non branded and one Apple Pencil, once I disconnect the Apple Pencil; the other two pencils works both in same time without any issues. Hopefully that Helps ;)
