So which smart keyboard do you prefer? Or do you have any other options? Maybe not using a physical keyboard at all? Looking forward to reading your comments! :)

I use my iPad mostly for note taking at school, school assignments, and as my main media device at home. For me the apple keyboard makes way more sense because I don’t do that much typing besides quick edits on word documents , replying to texts or emails and for that it works really well. If I have to do a long paper I just type it up on my laptop, which is heavy and a lot more cumbersome than my iPad, plus my iPad is a lot faster than my laptop or my school’s computers. I think this is something that really comes down to use case because I always take the keyboard case off when I’m at home and the fact that this case takes zero effort to take on and off is extremely nice and convenient for me. When I’m at school my iPad is in my bag and I’ve had no issues with bending or losing the pencil. Do the keys feel the best? Maybe I’m in the minority but I genuinely do not mind the feeling of the keys and find the performance perfectly acceptable, especially since the keyboard case is so thin and light. I can see why some people would lean towards other keyboards if they’re trying to make they’re tablet more like a laptop but for me I use my iPad as a tablet that I occasionally do laptop things on.

I appreciate that you are not only talking about the product but also shared your thinking of the real user scenario before the review. Although the first 8 minutes seems not related to the product itself (but it actually is - that’s the reason you choose the Logitech one), my point is it is important to thinking about user’s needs, which leads to a solution. I enjoy watching it.

The slim pro does have two angles! If you push the back loop in it sits the iPad more upright

I think for most cases, you can have a little angle while writing on ipad by placing the case upside down with the keyboard facing upward.

I dropped by ipad from a chair onto a tiled floor. Corner hit, cracked the glass, but worse - it distorted the frame. The glass was easy to replace, but no one could flatten the back Al frame. I think rubber corners are good, but, most of the flat surfaces (like the rear) could be shaved to an absolute minimum, similarly the front keyoard can be min to support a keyboard as keys protect the glass. I agree - why don't manufacturers invest in market research? Can you make a case with a 3D printer and use a stick on touch plastic keyboard?

There is two viewing angles for the typing mode! While in typing mode, take the stand flap, and fold it up, then you are gonna get a smaller angle on the screen.

Hi! Great video! Based on it I just got the same case and it’s great, only big downsides are weight and thickness (mostly the second). I agree it should have two position magnets on the keyboard side, but there’s another way to do it, you can have the stand flap to sit on the keyboard piece and out of it (on the table) that gives you two slightly different options on the angle. Also they could have easily made this case a lot better by adding rubber points on the keyboard side and some magnets or marks on the other side to use the iPad in multiple angles without the keyboard. Also you missed mentioning that the keyboard powers on and off automatically when the magnet attaches, and that the lock and volumes buttons on the iPad are very hard to press with this keyboard they made that part out of soft rubber for protection, but could had added some hard core on the buttons.

I like the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. If you put the iPad in the most upright slot then position the keyboard cover perpendicular to the desk you can have a nice slope to draw and write. I don’t seem to have a problem with the Apple Pencil detaching when its in my backpack computer sleeve pocket. Love my 12.9 Pro, Apple Pencil 2, and my folio keyboard!

I believe they just stick to the thin (and almost irreparable) designs to get richer: if it breaks, you lose it or can't be upgraded, you gotta give them more money.

So thin that you have to add a cover to protect it and an assortment of dongles and a place to put a pencil, and a keyboard.. ...and maybe another container to keep it all in, along with the chargers and head phones etc.

I purchased the previous version of Logitech keyboard and case for my first generation iPad Pro. While it was heavy it worked well. However after some time, it stopped working due to an iPad update. No support from apple or Logitech on the issue. I had to discard it and use a hard cover with pencil protection and a separate keyboard. I agree with your comments Tom. Why don’t companies speak to people like us who want to use the iPad Pro but still don’t have a good solution for protecting the iPad and pencil, having a good keyboard and not weighing a lot. Is that so hard?

As soon as i ordered my iPad i rushed and ordered an apple keyboard. I love how compact and how sleek it is. I also like how it types. I do think i would really like the Logitech option better. The thing I hate the most is typing at night, the keys are not backlit and it is so annoying. I usually end up putting the screen on as bright as it can be which is not ideal for your eyes when your trying to wind down at the end of the night. Also sometimes i fear if I drop my iPad with this keyboard case it would break. So i find myself putting it in my carry bag right away when I’m not using it. That’s just probably because it is a new toy and when you get something new and as expensive as this you tend to take good care of it for a while.

Great video Tom. I’m using the Apple Keyboard Folio. I just love how light it is, but you are right, very minimal protection. I just bought the Khomo based on your review for my nephew’s iPad Pro 11”. He doesn’t use a keyboard and carries the iPad on the train and all around the office, so no having much protection for the pencil is not good. I hope he likes it!
@liutony4872

The problem is when you touch the pencil, it will keep connected to the ipad and less likely to go to sleep, so the battery of the pencil will keep draining even when you are not using it.
@LorenzBarcelona
@LorenzBarcelona 5 жыл бұрын
Why would the khomo case provide more protection than the apple keyboard case? Yes it covers the sides but if anything, the portion covering the screen is much thinner than the the keyboard imo so the same damage would’ve happened if you dropped a panel on the same spot.

I got the ipad with the full package on release and no real filth on the cover just yet. No scratches on it and my ipad is basically scratchless. One thing I did notice was that the connection pins on the ipad are a bit scratched up due to the pins on the folio. Other than that, the whole package is basically well maintained. It does help that i use a sleeve to put it in. The sleeve also offers protection for the pencil. A cheap and simple solution and I use the ipad almost every day.

Yeah, my  pencil has fallen off a few times, but less than 5 times since i bought the iPad. I bought a sleeve in addition to the Keybaord folio 3rd gen so that protects my whole iPad Pro.  ‘s keyboard folio solves all my problems, only thing i don’t like about it is the clicking noise when i type, especially when am in the library. Thanks for the review. 2 things the  keyboard folio remains top for me, 1. No charging needed, 2. It’s lightweight. When I want to write, i just place it on my sleeve. I don’t like placing they keyboard on surfaces on it’s own as you know, the keyboard keys are exposed in writing mode. So for me personally, the  keyboard folio fits my needs best. I however think  keeps features for future release because think about it, if they release a keyboard that includes every feature then their incremental updates are gone. My views thou.

I got the 2020 11inch with the smart folio case and the slim and clean design is all I ever needed. I absolutely love it however I am OCD so my devices are always clean and never have I dropped a device with that being said I can see how it could be frustrating for the majority of people that need something that can handle more but you can always buy it somewhere else that's the beauty of apple products they have so much accessories you can chose from.

I bought iPad Pro 2018 when it’s newly out. I also bought a Smart Keyboard Folio, but I regret doing so. I actually love its thinness and the feeling of typing, but there was once that the magnet slipped, then my iPad fell and one of the corners crashed. At least the screen didn’t break or crack. Also, as you said, it gets dirty too easily. Mine worn out pretty much quickly, if I remembered correctly, just a year and it started to look bad. I guess this is one of the drawbacks of buying a product when it was too new. 😂

There is a low angle way to use the Apple folio case. Configure it like you're going to type, then lay it on its back and turn it around. You end up with the keyboard sticking up in the air, but it works great. The keyboard becomes a privacy screen. No, the case is not perfect, but it does have the benefit of being very thin and lightweight which feels so much better to carry around. I carry it in a bag usually and reinforce the pocket I keep it in with a piece of solid plastic I cut to size.

If you like to keep your Apple Pencil in the slot in the folding flap as I do so I don’t lose it, it can be frustrating not knowing it’s battery state. I fold the flap over the back of the screen when I’m using the keyboard, and I also have the battery app showing in the “today” view. I’ve found that if you pull the top of the screen towards you about a couple of inches then after a second or two the app will show the pencils battery level as well.

I was a big fan of protective casing in the past. The first accessory that I will look at for a newly purchased device is protective casing. There are a few minority voices who warned about the danger of heat dissipation when the device is all wrapped up in non-heat-conductive casing. I reasoned that if most ppl don't face issue using protective casing, I should be fine too. Lo and behold, my new device (an iPhone) failed within a month of my purchase due to overheating. Why I know its due to overheating? Its because I installed a rogue apps that caused so much heat on my device that it went into emergency shutdown. If I don't have that casing, the emergency shutdown may have saved it (but still there will be some heat damages). In other words, if you use protective casing, you are negating the heat sink design (primarily via the back) of apple device. Now I fully appreciate why apple in-house designed accessories all exposed a good part of their device back and never really cover it while using (look at Magic keyboard and Smart keyboard design which exposed the bottom half of iPad during usage). While drop damage is a chanced event which we can mitigate by being more careful, heat dissipation damage (not necessarily just the drastic kind that I faced but mostly for most users a slow degradation of components over time which are not obviously evident but which will shorten the lifespan MTTF of the components) (by wrapping it in casing) are a 100% surety. I rather take the gamble and risk of drop damage than knowing with surety that my device is slowly but surely being damage by heat trapped by the casing in every single usage. Hence no more protective casing for me anymore. This is my story which I would like to share.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. I too have looked at the Logitech keyboard and while I do like all of the attributes that you described, especially function keys, I love the light weight and slender profile of the Apple keyboard. I’ve been extremely impressed at how well the Apple pencil stays attached to my 10.5” iPad. If I want to have an angle when laying the iPad on the table so I can draw or watch a video I just leave it open and in position with the keyboard, put it so that the iPad is laying on the table and the keyboard sticks up in the air. I still get two viewing angles and I personally don’t notice any obstruction from the keyboard. I carry mine daily as well and have not had the Pencil dropping issue that you described but I may carry it differently. I AM concerned that a single drop or misplacement will break the iPad so I totally understand where you are coming from. Great job on your review, keep up the good work!

Tom, neither the apple keyboard nor Logitech keyboard allow you to to use the camera very easily. Since we are complaining, when I have the case on and I have the ipad in portrait mode, I cannot fold the keyboard open all the way and take pictures because the backside of the keys are covering the camera. No one seems to have a case that offers those function keys like Logi and allow the camera to be available, and hold the pen in place. Beside, why can't we put the pen on the top (by the camera)? Again in portrait mode (like a paper note pad) I have the pen on the right side, but I can't really grab onto the ipad because the pen gets in the way. So many little things they didn't seem to think about.

Different people have different demands. Engineers worked so hard to make iPad lighter and thinner then some people put a heave case on it, it is hard to make a keyboard case light and also light anyway. However, the only problem to me is that the price of apple Smart Keyboard is ridiculous.

My 2017 10.5” Smart Keyboard started falling to pieces after one and a half year. I’ve taken it back to the store and a few days later I’ve got a new one from the service. It works again like a charm. But when I went to the store, I played a bit with the 2018 Pros and Smart Keyboard Folios. After 5 minutes I got the same feeling like Tom. Why? Folio is uncomforable, and the whole device is not so roboust like it would be for everyday use. I’m a happy user of my 2017 10.5 with the leather Khömö case and standard Smt. Kbd., this is much more compact, roboust and comfortable, easy to grab and hold in my hands (yes, I like a bigger borders at the top and bottom) and also safe for my Pencil. The only problem is the lollipop-like pencil charging, but in most cases, that is just a few minutes a day when it lies on my desk.

I prefer slim that way I will not hang on thick stuff. The only thing I don’t like about apple keyboard is that at night you can’t see the keyboard if writing in low screen light. I take care of my stuff really good, so there is no way I’m going to drop it or the kids. But still think that you can do more on the surface than iPad. Hopefully apple can add the pen function with out opening a new box draw to write. But it’s getting there. Photoshop is not at it fullest function yet, that’s why I bought it but oh well. Paying $1,550.00 to have the iPad Pro with the keyboard and pen at the end of the day, I think it’s not worth it for just an iPad but what also can you buy when you have apple products.

Unfortunately, these Khomo accessories don't seem to be available in my country. It is certainly much better than the Smart Keyboard. However, let's keep in mind that the iPad is a portable device. When I go outside I don't need an extra keyboard, and when I'm in the studio I haven't seen anything better than the Apple Magic Keyboard. It has too many advantages over all these pretty but weak toys Apple designed for iPad Pro 3rd Gen, and I can also use it comfortably on my lap.

Thanks for your video about iPad accessoires and so on. I like your calm voice and good pronunciation, easy to follow. May I give you some hints to make it more useful for strangers like me, Write down the names of products shortly. I still don't know the name of the products you are talking about, except Mac, Apple. etc. Please give also weights in metric. Difference 300 once ? No idea ! Thanks in advance, an European.

Paul W.J. Thanks for the great feedback! I am German and used metric. So I said grams 😉 For the names please go into the subscription of the video. But it is a good suggestion adding words directly to the video 👍

If you use the Logitech slim folio it weighs as much as a MacBook Air and close to a 13" MacBook Pro. I say might as well get the MacBook 🤷‍♂️

Bought the Logitech folio keyboard and hate it. If you are only typing then it is ok, but if you want to use it only as a tablet as well, which I need when I am away from my desk, it slides around and is very awkward to hold. The flap for the pencil also doesn’t always hold it in place and can disengage the pencil from its dock. Really disappointed with the Logitech case. Haven’t tried the Apple Smart Keyboard yet so have no comment on it.

Great video, but I used the Logitech keyboards for some months now and I am not happy with it. Way too thick, too heavy and overall not a great experience. Also a big disadvantage is the bad cleaning capability. Because I use the iPad in school where desks are cleaned only a few times a year, it is important for me to clean the keyboard with water time to time (its layn down often on the desk), which is only possible with the apple original keyboard. However, I will sell the Logitech keyboard and order the apple keyboard, the shown disadvantages are not perfect, but not all of them even affect me, so let's have a try.

Well done. I think we have something in common, that we work with more than one language. I use Italian, Norwegian, etc. It seems that the keyboards are no good for special characters, one simply has to go back to touch mode. Of course with a keyboard you cannot visualise the layout of another language. I wish someone would comment on that problem.

it would be great to have a Keyboard with led panels on it that switch depending on what keyboard is active. something like Stream Deck by elgato

@@paperlessmovement Right. I think the keyboard manufacturers haven't really coped with multilingual situations. I deal with my native language, English, with Italian, French, Russian(!), and all goes well on my iMac, of course, but also on the touch of iPad 11". I should probably wait and see what comes up. Many thanks for your interest.

You can change the angle by the way you fold the back. Without photos its hard to describe it. I just found this out! Haha I was sad about the angle too until I learned this.

Ok, I am confused, I went to the link for that keyboard and case and it is different than the one you had in your video? It looked like it didn't have the flap like you had, it had a loop that didn't allow charging of the pencil. Do you have a link for the one that you had in the video? I currently use an IVSO case for my my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro that is similar to the one you had for your older iPad Pro. It has the slot in it for the Apple pencil so it can charge. With that IVSO case I use the smaller apple keyboard with Fintie case that also has a stand built into it, on the keyboard. It is very light and works great. I used the ZAGG slimbook case and keyboard (worked GREAT!!) on my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9", but when I got the new iPad Pro, it didn't fit anymore. Thanks! :)

Absolutely! His link takes one to a page with not less than 28 DIFFERENT cases - none of which seem to match the one shown in the video. Seldom does one encounter a video that wastes so much time illustrated how NOT to do something, and so Little time providing a solution.
