In today’s episode, Becket chats with Dr. Thaddeus Williams about his new book, “Don’t Follow Your Heart: Boldly Breaking the Ten Commandments of Self-Worship.” We were never meant to bear the impossible weight of creating and sustaining our identities, but with the steady stream of propaganda telling us to be true to ourselves and live our best lives, it's no wonder many of us are. In Don't Follow Your Heart, Thaddeus Williams builds a case that self-worship is not authentic, it's arrogant. It is not satisfying, it robs us of awe. It is hardly new and edgy, but is hopelessly traditionalist, rehashing what is literally humanity's oldest lie.
As he explores the Ten Commandments of Self-Worship, Williams calls for a new generation of heretics, iconoclasts, renegades, mavericks, and rebels who refuse to march like good little cows, mooing in unison with the herd. He points us to a life beyond the boring, conventional, and self-defeating dogmas of self-worship and shows us how much more meaningful a life centered on God can truly be.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

LOVED THIS! Sent on to my 23-year old and will watch with my 19-year old. This is particularly relevant to them. Even as Christian young adults, they can be subtly indoctrinated before they even realize it.
@aw6707

Had a wise friend say we are all indoctrinated by our surroundings - mostly as kids. We then either have been taught to think for ourselves from a Biblical vantage point, or just indoctrinated and have no capacity for thought. Then we are put into an insane world of chaos and have to make sense of it. The biblical thinkers make it, the indoctrinated just mesh as best they can the of slaught of world views they meet. We don't "lose our kids" to indoctrination, we use them to lack of capacity of thought which we didn't teach them.

When I was 10 I was a head taller than everyone my age, very skinny and good at sports. My mum is a Christian but refused to dress me in 'girly' clothes. I was told by all my peers (at school and church) that I wasn't a real girl so I must really be a boy or a lesbian and no boy would ever want me. This was 1985. It continued in my life from then on. This treatment has deeply hurt me and affected me even up until today. Even though I have given my life to Christ I still can't walk in the freedom I want to because I still get told I'm not what anyone is looking for within the church re. ministry, so I believe I'm worthless. I've been single since my divorce in 2008, even though my ex has passed away. They don't say this but I know I'm a disappointment to my parents because of that. I don't want to feel sorry for myself but it really does hurt. Everyone judges by appearances but it's so destructive. Please, God, help us to be more like you! Save us from ourselves! 💔

I'm so sorry to hear how you were hurt. You need to know how precious you are to God. He gave His ALL for your salvation - because He values you, and wants you as His child forever. Now let that sink in. People will disappoint us at times, and we even disappoint ourselves. But God has our ultimate best in mind. That may often mean that we go through hardships and trials. But the end goal is steeped in love. Take courage, precious sister. You are known and loved.

This is excellent, each point so important. Grateful that COURAGE was addressed! Sophie Scholl is one of my heroes. If our Founding Fathers courage was at the same level of most of today’s Church leaders and politicians, the USA would not exist. We need Paul’s words “to live is Christ, to die is gain”etched into the fabric of our being, live abandoned to Jesus and the establishment of his Kingdom on earth instead of clinging to the world and vying for man’s approval. God bless you both for the example you set for us all.

I love how these 'commandments' were framed to describe the self worship in our culture. We are believers, who have been shown mercy and love by our living Lord need to glorify Him and deny the minute by minute temptations to glorify ourselves. What have we receive that has not been given by Christ? I think when we point at the Godless culture, we have 3 more fingers pointing to ourselves. Too many of us are glorifying ourselves- in the name of Jesus. Our hearts are so deceiving.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it. Better to follow God's way i think. I was a tomboy growing up. I played football with the boys which got very rough. I was thinking if it was in this time frame i would have been encouraged to go trans. Instead i was encouraged to stop playing football and injuring myself. My mom said i should protect my body not change it.

Jeremiah 17:9. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? King James Bible. The LORD dealt with me years ago when i was at the height of trying to please my self and manifest joy in my life in my own way. I cannot, never have and never will be able to know my own heart like my creator God knows it. He made it and knows me to the depths of my heart, soul, body and spirit. My whole outlook on life changed and released me from the bondage of this me, myself and I world. I appreciate your channel so much, Becket. May God, through his son, Jesus Christ, continue to bless and keep you. This is why I do not follow my heart.

P.S. I just also want to say, I am of course a very imperfect person and can still be deceived, however I do constantly quote this bible verse to remind myself. I ask God, is this something you want me to see, do, be, go to, experience, have? I wish I could have been taught as a child to question like this man is teaching his children. Better now than never, right?😊
